This is not the first time that Finale has advertised a feature that doesn't actually work for everyone. I don't know much about sound cards, but I know that mine doesn't play back particularly well, and I assumed that this new feature would make my playback sound better. As far as I can tell, it doesn't -- probably because my card isn't compatible. My sound card, by the way, is a Montego A3D Mine is also a Montego. Hi, I don't think you need any special soundcard. All you need to do is select the new Midi device that Finale installs - the SmartMusic SoftSynth. Aaron, did you do that? And if you don't like the sound, just download a different one from one of those free soundfont sites and replace the file synthgms.sf2 in the Component Files folder. Can this feature be disabled? Can you select your own midi device to produce sounds? I understand that software synths are resource hogs... Aaron, did you do that? Yes, and I didn't really notice any change. Having looked into this briefly a while back, I seem to remember dimly that only Soundblaster cards (and exact compatibles) can use SoundFonts.. My Montego card is not compatible. Yes -- and as I just wrote in another post, there is a slight difference from my regular sounds, although not nearly as much as I had expected. I don't understand the section about having a SoundFont compatible sound card that the original poster quoted. That shouldn't be needed (which is the whole idea with the SoftSynth)! I know almost nothing about sound cards. But when soundfonts were discussed here a few months ago, I looked around the Net for something that might be better than the built-in sounds on my card. I think I remember that I found that soundfonts were designed for Soundblaster and compatibles, and that my Montego card seemed to have no way of loading them. Now, it's entirely possible that I was wrong, or that I'm remembering wrong, or that when Coda says soundfont they mean something else entirely. But when someone else mentioned that they couldn't hear a difference with their Montego card, it rang a bell. Okay, I stand corrected on the SoundFont issue. I guess I was expecting to hear more of a difference. Aaron. ___ Finale mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
