I would happily pay for a functionally organized, printed (or PDF) manual

Though not an extensive index, Finale Power! describes many of the plug-ins throughout
and when to use them. In fact, the book even bundles many of the third party plug-ins
on the included CD (and these are also referenced often in the book). The format is
task-oriented, and points to related plug-ins when appropriate. It's based on Finale
2003, so the 2004 plug-ins aren't included, but could be a helpful reference
nonetheless.

Plugin index, was: Re: [Finale] Split Points in Imported MIDI Files

To a limited extent (i.e. not for TGTools), you can arrange the Plugins
folder so that the menu is more organized, creating folders for whatever
sorts of categories you want. If it doesn't affect the loading time too
much for your taste, I suppose you could even copy the same plugin into more
than one folder if you want it organized as such.

The sorting isn't very helpful when the plugins are inconsistently named
and with hidden features. And especially the TGTools mess -- a great plugin
set, don't get me wrong, but one seriously in need of both an editor and
designer, and one very much in need of being freed from its fixed,
proprietary menu.

And there are so many hidden features in the plugins that aren't logical
until you've actually got the plugin dialog box open. I *hate* saying to
myself, Oh, THAT'S where that is! I'll do something the hard way, only to
discover a plugin that's been there for several versions of Finale, but is
both badly named and with features that aren't obvious. Maybe some folks
like that tabbed UI of TGTools, for example. I hate having to tab through a
plugin to see if it just might be the one that does what I'm looking for.

Since those issues aren't likely to be solved, I'm thinking an functional
index is the next best thing -- as I described in another post, a kind of
cheat sheet like the Finale reference card. I don't know about anyone
else, but that reference card is always right under my cup of coffee next
to the monitor. :)

If Finale dumps their copy protection, I'll get the latest version and
write that plugin index myself.

I guess what I'm asking is if anybody has taken the time to create an
index, much like the Finale reference card, of the plugins. Back in the
Finale 2.2 days, I created my own index of functions with brief
descriptions that I kept as my cheat sheet. It took a week, but
ultimately saved me weeks of work.

Does anybody else think this plugin-by-function index would be valuable? I
don't have F2K4 (still holding out against their copy protection), so if I
were to create one, it wouldn't be very valuable to anyone else.

Take a look at TGTool | Options | More program options | Put TGTools menu
in menu bar.
