Re: [Finale] Drum Patterns

2004-10-23 Thread laloba2
Karen
I don't exactly swear by the percussion map; I usually swear AT it.

Hee..hee..:-)
Actually I have your first paragraph taken care of. I have set the
perc map so that when I hit F# or C# (treble clef entry) I get an X
head on G and C (for cymbals and rimshots), whereas if I hit G# I
get a circled X head for crash on the G space. Notice that F#, G,
and G# all come out on the G space, but it is only the G that is a
normal notehead, which I reserve for cues. I also have B as a
stemless slash, and Bb as a stemmed slash, so that I can combine
standard, slash, and rhythmic notation in the same measure without
having to switch tot the Staff Tool, Select Partial Measures, select
the passage, hit the S or R, then turn off Select Partial Measures,
which always seemed like a kludge to me.
Christopher, this is really smart!! I think I will try some of
thisespecially for drum parts specifically. Thank you!

As for files from other people, I'm glad you have a method, as that
kind of thing always stymies me. Transposition doesn't work in
percussion notation, as I'm sure you noticed,
You hit the nail on the head. The transposition thing is important
to me a lot of times. Especially with some of the slash and rhythmic
notation. For that I will change noteheads to slashes and/or hide
stems depending on what I am trying to do within a regular staff. I
can then transpose everything if I paste it into different parts both
hands of the piano, transposing instruments no matter what clef etc.

so I end up creating a new drum staff, re-entering that drum part,
then deleting the old staff. Arghh.
Fool around with some of the explosion/implosion features...these
combined with quickeys (or the macro creator of your choice) can be
surprisingly fast and easy!

Oh yes, Mac for me. PC for you? Potato; potahto. (and perhaps PAtato
for drummers (pat a toe, get it?))
Mac for me toodefinitely Potato...:-)
Take care,
-K

Hi Christopher,
Yes, I did know about this. It's just my personal preference to
not use a percussion map. Depending on what I'm working on I may
later move things to different lines to make them more readable
etc. It bothers me to have to then change the notehead too. I'll
often add kicks over time, kicks with horns etc. on the top line
where I may usually have a cymbal (x's). I can be more flexible
with which layers things show up in too. Again, just personal
preference.

My other problem is that I get files from other people and their
drum parts come in set up differently. Rather than try and create
a perc. map each time. I can just "blow everything apart" clean
it up, apply any notehead move all the notes to one line (this is
particularly handy with snare parts where rim shots come in on a
different line and I want all snare notes on the same line...I'll
then use x noteheads for rim shots and regular note heads
everywhere else) assign layer and put it back together. I have
everything "quickeyed" so that makes it easier too.

But I have friends that swear by the percussion map:-) Hmmm...mac or pc?

"x"'s Then I use implode music to put the high hat, cymbals and
snare back together in the same layer on the same staff. Finale
will sort it out so that everything is clean as far as the stems
go.

Karen,
Do you know that you can set the Percussion Map so that all
incidences of the same note will automatically appear as X heads
(or any other shape you want) AND appear on the line or space you
want? This is quite a bit quicker than separating, changing, and
merging, especially when we are talking about an entire drum part.

Yes, I forgot about these. I actually own a copy of HDSpeedTools for
MacOS 9. Thing is, I am a little anoyed about their update policy.
When I bought the product it said "Free Updates for Live" just as it
does now. Only HDSpeedTools for OS X are not actually the same
product. So I never actually got any major product updates for free.
Which sort of defeats the point of the free update policy.
It seems that you are not alone with being annoyed. Apparently,
there is a difference between "updates" and "upgrades" from what I've
read (updates are free, upgrades are not) Some people are
understandably upset because they feel mislead. But I can't imagine
a company being able to survive without repeat business in the form
of paid upgrades.

I haven't used it ... one to keep an eye on, looks interesting. I'd
like to see a few reviews of this thing before I parted with any
cash - $90!
you can buy an operating system for that :)
Not many reviews that I can find yet aside form complaints about the
business modelbut I think some drive manufacturers/distributors
are shipping the utility with their external drives. This may be the
difference between Drive 10 and speed tools. It looks to me like
Speedtools may have nice utilities for external drives (specifically
Oxford drives.)

My initial hunch is that this is a good product but they will have to
overcome the bitter taste they have left in some of their customer's
mouths.

I guess time will tell. Thanks for your feedback!
Best,
K

Agreed. If you consider the noteheads just as components of the notes,
you would tie from the beginning of the duration of the sound to the end
- from the outer boundaries of the ties. This gives a concept that I
work from, and the pieces I find easiest to read also work this way

But that's just what works for me.

Johannes is right that there are separate traditions in this and both

you're choosing to follow, whether it's your judgment as a scholar in
terms of matching an appropriate historical style or it's your judgment
as an engraver in terms of deciding what you consider more readable and
attractive.

The same problem applies to the end of the slur in a phrase that ends
on a tied note.

That depends. 18th and early 19th century tradition in prints is usually
to have the slur start on the second note. Later 19th and early 20th
century tradition is to have the slur start on the first note. Today
both conventions are used. The more "traditional" way is to start on the
first note. However, in almost all recent critical editions of 18th
century music try to be faithful to the earlier tradition (ie start on
second note). You will see this in editions like the Neue Bach Ausgabe,
Mozart and Haydn complete edition etc.
And a related question: if one uses so-called "European" ties that look
like slurs and a note has both a tie and a slur starting (or ending) on
it, does one simply move the slur vertically to avoid the collision, or
does one also move the tie a bit horizontally, and perhaps the slur

Difficult to give a general answer. I usually change both. In fact my
tie and slur settings compromise so that most of the time I wouldn't
have to change slurs/ties, if the tie end coincides with the slur
beginning (ie the critical edition approach which I prefer). When a tie
and slur beginning coincide I usually move the slur up. Since my ties
start slightly further to the right of the note I don't have to adjust
the tie.

The best advice is to look at some editions which you like and see what
they do.

I have my slurs looking just about to my taste over two notes,
except in the case of a wide (octave) leap, where the slur seems too
flat. Is there anything I should or could change in my settings to
make them less flat, without changing the appearance of other slurs?

Thanks,

You can drag the contours of the slur around, but don't do it. The
trick with slurs on octave (and bigger) leaps is to nudge the whole
slur outward (i.e., away from the stems) by two or three pixels
horizontally without changing its curvature.

Works like a charm!

(which seems to be basically TechTool, but without the Hardware
tests, which I am not sure I will need anyway).

Thanks for telling me this in time. I guess this is another reason
why people keep several of these utilities. As I said, so far
Apple's Disk Utility has cured all my problems in OS X, but one
never knows (I had numerous problems in the old OS 9 days, and
Norton did save my life a few times then). It seems to me that OS X
is a lot safer (probably mostly because it doesn't let you install
things all that easily, and keeps Administrators and Users apart),
but then, things do go wrong.

Thanks for all the input!

[Finale] Re: 32nd's

2004-10-23 Thread Eisenbeil

Hello,

I currently use Finale 2004.  I wouild like to create a tempo marking using 32nd notes but I can't seem to find a font to use as an _expression_ mark.  Neither Maestro nor Jazz fonts seem to have a 32nd notehead.  48 hours later I'm still scratching my head.

I'd appreciate the assistance.

Thanks,

In the U.S., the Copyright office of the Library of Congress is supposed
to maintain the registry which provides the current identity of the
coypright owner, though they may not always be up to date. Recently
published material--collections, and songbooks--is usually pretty
accurate as to who the owner of the copyright was at the time the
article was published. Older material becomes less accurate as
copyrights change hands, and as copyright holders names change.

Re: [Finale] OT: Mac Disk Maintenance

2004-10-23 Thread Eden - Lawrence D.
My first choice for defragging a drive is Norton Speed Disk. I own
DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro, but for defragging...you can't beat Speed
Disk.

[Finale] Searching for Copyright Referent

2004-10-23 Thread Giovanni Andreani
Hello

One question about copyright regarding music which is not of public
domain: how do you find the copyright's holder? As an example, let's say:
I want to arrange a music piece like Hey Jude or a cartoon's main theme,
etc. and I know the author's name(s); where do I find the information
needed for contacting the main referent who can release permissions and
extend rights on these protected works?

Thank you in advance

Re: [Finale] Drum Patterns

2004-10-23 Thread Christopher Smith
Karen
I don't exactly swear by the percussion map; I usually swear AT it.
Actually I have your first paragraph taken care of. I have set the perc
map so that when I hit F# or C# (treble clef entry) I get an X head on
G and C (for cymbals and rimshots), whereas if I hit G# I get a circled
X head for crash on the G space. Notice that F#, G, and G# all come out
on the G space, but it is only the G that is a normal notehead, which
I reserve for cues. I also have B as a stemless slash, and Bb as a
stemmed slash, so that I can combine standard, slash, and rhythmic
notation in the same measure without having to switch tot the Staff
Tool, Select Partial Measures, select the passage, hit the S or R, then
turn off Select Partial Measures, which always seemed like a kludge to
me.

As for files from other people, I'm glad you have a method, as that
kind of thing always stymies me. Transposition doesn't work in
percussion notation, as I'm sure you noticed, so I end up creating a
new drum staff, re-entering that drum part, then deleting the old
staff. Arghh.

Oh yes, Mac for me. PC for you? Potato; potahto. (and perhaps PAtato
for drummers (pat a toe, get it?))

Hi Christopher,
Yes, I did know about this. It's just my personal preference to not
use a percussion map. Depending on what I'm working on I may later
move things to different lines to make them more readable etc. It
bothers me to have to then change the notehead too. I'll often add
kicks over time, kicks with horns etc. on the top line where I may
usually have a cymbal (x's). I can be more flexible with which layers
things show up in too. Again, just personal preference.

My other problem is that I get files from other people and their drum
parts come in set up differently. Rather than try and create a perc.
map each time. I can just "blow everything apart" clean it up,
apply any notehead move all the notes to one line (this is
particularly handy with snare parts where rim shots come in on a
different line and I want all snare notes on the same line...I'll then
use x noteheads for rim shots and regular note heads everywhere else)
assign layer and put it back together. I have everything "quickeyed"
so that makes it easier too.

But I have friends that swear by the percussion map:-) Hmmm...mac
or pc?

Implode music is also sometimes handy if you need to merge two
separate parts back onto one staff in the same layer. I sometimes
split everything out on to it's own staff using explode parts to
quickly change noteheads for say the high-hat and cymbal parts to
"x"'s Then I use implode music to put the high hat, cymbals and
snare back together in the same layer on the same staff. Finale
will sort it out so that everything is clean as far as the stems go.

Karen,
Do you know that you can set the Percussion Map so that all
incidences of the same note will automatically appear as X heads (or
any other shape you want) AND appear on the line or space you want?
This is quite a bit quicker than separating, changing, and merging,
especially when we are talking about an entire drum part.
