In "expression assignment" (I think) there's a check box for "individual
positioning." I rough out the placement, then go back, check individual
positioning, then fine tune.

His (Haba's) opera "Mother" is also very good. If you can get ahold of
Ives' quarter-tone piano pieces I'd say give them a go. Unfortunately I
don't have a workable recording of mhy own trombone sonata.

What is the basic tonality? I mean, does it mater, whether it is just,
tempered, etc. tuning?

Any info would be appreciated.

The tonality is a matter of the composer's philosophy. Most of Haba's
music is atonal. The just-intonation crew (Partch and his followers,
such as Johnston) usually fall on the tonal side, but though they use
many microtones, these are derived from the harmonic series and do not,
strictly speaking, include quarter-tones.

Some well-known, commercially recorded quarter-tone works Include Ives'
Fourth Symphony, his Two Quartertone Piano Pieces, and Copland's
Vitebsk.

Me, I use equal-tempered quartertones in all kinds of ways, including
quarter-tone "key signatures" that shift all notes up or down a quarter
step until the signature is cancelled. In such passages, it is the
"normal" notes that sound out of tune! If you're curious to hear this,
check out the audio excerpt of my *Chamber Symphony* sax quartet at
http://www.kallistimusic.com/APSblurbs.html A few other audio clips on
this same page also use quartertones, but this one is the most dramatic
and obvious in that way.

Printing to PDF is how I first encountered the problem. FWIW: it appears
to be an incompatibility between MacFin and the Xante Accel-a-Writer-4G
driver. I set up a Generic Postscript printer and it prints correctly.

This is not a general problem with the Xante driver, since other
programs (including, thankfully, Preview) print with no problem. This is
a problem specific to Finale and the Xante driver.

Start your click-drag outside the staff, slightly above or below it.
The entire measure will only be selected if you click inside the bar.

In Windows, it's Alt-Ctrl-click. Take a look in the help file under

[Finale] Selecting Partial Measures (Stupid Question)

2008-10-18 Thread Neal Gittleman

Sorry to waste your time, but I'm wasting mine

2k8 on Mac...

In the "old days" I was accustomed to selecting partial measures just
by clicking and dragging the mouse. Now the click highlights the
entire bar and I can only select partial measures via the "Select
Region..." menu, which works, but is definitely slower. I'm sure
there's a way to do the click-and-drag, but can't figure it out. Any
hints?

When copying music via shift-option-click, how do you get to the "old"
dialogue that asks how many times you want to copy?

I guess that's 2 stupid questions

Thanks!

Usually quarter-tone music is played tempered. It spans the whole range
that 12TET music does, from modernist to romantic (as you can hear in the
Ives, especially the Largo and Chorale).
