[Finale] John Howell's Passing
[please forgive the cross-postings if you happen to receive this more than once] I can't recall when I first bumped into John Howell on-line, but I do remember that it was when he challenged some statement I had made regarding copyright. I was totally mistaken, having voiced a common misconception about some aspect of copyright. He challenged me to read the copyright law, which I did, and to do further research, which I did, and from that first encounter, one of the biggest aspects of the on-line friendship which he and I developed (as he did with many many others) was his ability to make me challenge myself and to carefully think about what I was about to post. I can only begin to imagine what an excellent teacher he was in person, but I know that he would have helped all his students take a huge step into being better students and better human beings by his constant willingness to challenge what was said and to force others to back up what they said with proof. I can't describe the feeling of being punched in the stomach that I had when I read of his passing yesterday (I hadn't been online on Saturday), and still I feel an emptiness inside, knowing that he will never again either challenge or agree with things that I write on the various on-line groups that we both belonged to. He and I think very much alike with regards to community music groups as well as agreeing on many other aspects of the musical world, and I know that I have lost a great and dear friend, as have we all. The world was a much better place for John's having been a part of it, and it will be all the poorer for the lack of his presence from now on. Rest in peace, dear friend. -- David H. Re: [Finale] John Howell's Passing
I knew John and Susie from our Indiana university days. Susie had been doing some work that involved he Dutch language, and I was able to work with her a bit on that, after which we would sometimes hang and talk. They were two very interesting and intelligent people, and I enjoyed their company during the brief time I got to spend with them. Jim Sent from my iPhone, so please pardon all the typos. [Finale] Darcy and the Secret Society Rule (but we knew that)
Friends, Last evening, on NPR's 360, heard an interview of Darcy on the topic of his new release, /Brooklyn Babylon/. Good album, good interview. Way to go, Darcy. For those who missed it, or who ant to hear it again, with a bit of Mel Brooks on the side, http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/studio360/podcast/~3/3QsVIxr37vo/ ns ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] Darcy and the Secret Society Rule (but we knew that)
Wow. The few sound clips that appear on the interview sound very interesting. The description 21st century big band might sound a bit highfalutin, but what I hear adds up to that description. It seems that the trend in big bands in the last 30 years was mostly about playing louder, faster, and higher. All the same licks and changes, just played faster and louder. I won't name names, but most of that bores me to tears. But so do Mozart and Vivaldi. This music seems to have dimensions that do go beyond the modern big band phase. Exciting stuff. Re: [Finale] Darcy and the Secret Society Rule (but we knew that)
Thank you for the kind words. It was a fun interview! And of course, it's not like we were in the same studio at the same time or anything like that, but it is nonetheless an honor to share the air with the great Mel Brooks.
