Re: [Finale] Is this a Finale or Sibelius list?

2005-07-13 Thread Eden - Lawrence D.
Yes.. This List has always been a valuable resource when I
needed an
answer about Finale.

Ron should be forgiven for not knowing that it is futile to suggest that a
topic be dropped on the Finale List...I have been wearing out my delete
key recently too, and I don't recall hearing such anger with another list
member since I was on the Trumpet List...:-)

ALso, I am happy to say that my chance of switching to Sibelius are two
fold: no way and no how.

Sounds good, but stick around. The tides of topics come and go. Some here
will remember the (it seems like) hundreds of messages over the question of
when the 20th Century actually ended. Ultimately, though, you will find that
this list is a tremendous resource. Ask a question about a Finale problem
and see how quick you get a solution.

Re: [Finale] OT: Firefox

Andrew,

Check which version of Firefox you downloaded. If you are using an OS 9x
version that requires a reboot, you would do well to download the OSX
version. It is dependable and very fast.

toner-cartridge order via Buy.com! By contrast, it took only 7 minutes
to do the same thing w. Netscape 7 in System 9--including the extra
reboot time to get into System 9 and back again.

Can anyone recommend a browser that performs w. similar speed and

I am often undecided about using sharps as accidentals in flat keys and

I want to know what is the correct way to make the decision.

I want my parts to be easily read and played correctly, but I don't want

I installed OSX on my wife's iMac so that I could get a chance to see it
in action. For me, OSX is too un-Mac like to be worth leaving home for.
Although there are some advantages with OSX, I am quite happy with 9.2.
Finale NEVER crashes. I am still using 2K3b and I have no
complaints...and I have no issues with MIDI.
When my present computer starts to feel too slow for my arrangements, I
will upgrade, but not before. I don't look forward to having to replace
all the components in my present system. I like my printer and MIDI, and
my serial ports too.

Computer companies are in business to sell you the latest models. Reminds
me of the Gilette razor company. They make a great product, then they try
hard to convince you that their old model wasn't any good and you need to
buy another.

Anyway, I still love my outdated equipment, and my outdated version of
Finale.

It's a fact of life that if one is going to use a computer in his/her

upgrade both the hardware and the software. I fought this notion for a
number of years, resenting the fact that we users seem to be caught in
a spending loop that never seems to end. But I finally saw the writing
on the wall. There's no fighting it.

When I read an excuse for not upgrading, such as the above post, it
just doesn't hold water. Who in this day and age doesn't have a disk
burner? Or a firewire drive? These things are cheap these days. And
what's the big deal about switching to OSX? Like you, I was reluctant
to make the big switch, but after MOTU released Digital Performer for
OSX, and Coda released Finale 2004, I finally took the plunge, and I'm
never goin' back. Please don't be scared off by all the posts about
bugs in Finale 2004. I use it every day, and it has never crashed
once, and I've experienced none of the bugs people are complaining
about. I don't use auto-save, BTW, so maybe that's why. I do get
occasional crashes in OSX, but never in Finale, or Digital Performer,
 for that matter.

If you're new music notation specialists, why are you trying to use
antiquated computer hardware and an antiquated operating system to do
your work? I say get with the program and get back to work. That's
what I did, albeit kicking and screaming at first.

No offense, just my 2 cents

This raises a totally tangential issue -- why aren't more clefs taught

As a public school instrumental music teacher for 27 years, I have been
happy if my elementary school students learned the basics. I agree with
David, that a knowledge of clefs would be valuable information for
students to have, but the sad reality is that there is little time in the
day for such specialized music education.

IMHO, teaching clefs in this day and age is the responsibility of
private teachers...
