[Finale] Polychord Symbol

2018-08-10 Thread William Huber
Dear All,

I need to enter a polychord symbol into a score and parts. The polychord is an
F over an Ab7. I want to show the polychord with the F directly over the Ab7
with a horizontal line between them. (I use a slash mark to depict chords with
an alternate bass note.)

I am using manual input for the chord symbols, typing in the following:
“F_Ab7”. But when I move to the next chord, Finale removes the “7” so that all
I get is an “F/Ab”. My hope is to have just a chord symbol rather than a chord
symbol with a “7” added as either an expression or text file. I am using Finale
2014.5 for this file, running Mac OS 10.11.6.

All help is gratefully accepted.

With Thanks in advance,

[Finale] FInale for the Visually Impaired?

2015-11-22 Thread William Huber
Dear Collective Wisdom,

I have been working with a student who is blind. What I have been doing is
using Finale to re-orchestrate some hymns, entering the four part harmony into
Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass lines, and then moving the lines around into the
different instruments for her. Finale’s playback allows her to hear how it
sounds with the selected instruments, we make changes and try again and good
things emerge.

The drawback with this method is that it requires a sighted person to
manipulate Finale. Is there some way, some application, or some set of
applications which might allow her to do this on her own? She can play piano,
and her computer is set up so that she can control it by voice. Does anyone
have any experience with this, or know where I might seek information about
this? I’d be grateful for any ideas.

[Finale] Finale 2011 Plug In Installation

2014-03-11 Thread William Huber
Dear All,

Finale 2011b.r2, Mac 10.8.5. I'm attempting to install some new plug-ins.
When I go to Preferences Program Options Folders check Plug-ins, select a
folder, apply, OK, and restart, my new plug-ins appear, but the preinstalled
plug-ins, such as TG Tools, Scoring and Arranging, Note, Beam and Rest
Editing, etc., all disappear.

I have tried searching for TG Tools and Patterson Plug-ins Lite in hope of
finding the path to where those folders are located with no luck. I have tried
Go to Folder with no luck.

I've quite a cache of useful Finale List postings saved up, and have had no
luck searching them. Any help in getting all of the plug-ins into the same
place so that all could appear and be used would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bill Huber

[Finale] Flip Folder Sized Printing

2012-07-13 Thread William Huber
Dear Last Best Hopes,

Finale 2011b, Mac 10.6.8, hp laserjet 2100TN

I'm having a devil of a time trying to print out flip folder-
sized parts. I used the Finale Marching Band template to create the
score. I went to print the parts, and all parts viewed and printed in
normal portrait mode.

Then I went to the Document menu, and did Page Format Parts.
Under Page Size, I chose Octavo and set the orientation to Landscape.
I chose the Page Layout Tool, went to the Page Layout Menu and chose
Redefine Pages All Pages of Current Part/Score. I clicked on every
OK button in sight that popped up. The part still viewed and printed
in Portrait orientation.

Under the File menu, I chose Printer Page Setup and clicked on
the Landscape orientation icon. No change.

I went back to the Document menu and chose Edit Part and chose
the first listing, which showed the instrumental part that I was
trying to print. I selected that and the part now showed on screen in
flip-folder size and orientation. Hurrah

But when I try to print what's showing on screen, the part goes
back to printing in portrait mode.

Nor does the part save in this mode, nor does it save this way
using Save As. Trying to save what's on screen as a pdf file
doesn't save the part as flip folder size, but instead saves it as
portrait orientation.

A search through the Make Music Help turned up the same
directions as with my copy of Finale.

What am I missing? Help! You're my last hope! It's either the
White Knights of the Finale List, or I'm going to get my pen,
straight edge, and correction fluid and get it done and over with.

With Thanks and Gratitude in Advance,

The dialogue box is not a drop down menu.

If you have already entered Slash Notation, there should be a blue
line over the staff when you have the Staff Tool selected. Right-
click the blue line and hold, and choose Edit Staff Style from the
drop down menu. NOW the dialogue box opens. One of the items with a
check mark in it is Alternate Notation. Click that to open another
window, where you will see a list of items to appear. You want
Items In Other Layers all to have check marks next to them.

From now on (in that document) you will be able to enter cues in a
layer other than layer 1 and have them appear on the staff along
with the slash notation. I usually choose Layer 3, because I can
set it to always have stems up, ties up, and rests displaced by 6
 steps.

For the drum parts for my band (17 piece big band) I use the
 following settings:
Layer 4 - slash notation (allow all other thingies in other layers).
Layer 1 - cues for punches/cues for other sections (bones have
 rhythm X, etc).
Layer 3 - bass drum kicks.
This is with the percussion line set to Drum Kit.
Layer 1 cues are either Hi Tom or Hi Hat/Crash cymbal.

That's enough to get the idea through to my drummer (and those who
sub for him), and is all they want.

Re: [Finale] Trombone mute holders - advice

2011-04-05 Thread William Huber

Hello!

I receive the digest form, so please excuse me if someone has already
added these thoughts.

I've had to battle with mutes for several years while playing
trombone in a variety of settings. Some of the solutions I've seen
and tried are as follows:

A music stand with the desk turned horizontally and a dark towel
placed on it to deaden the noise might work as a mute tray if there
is room for it.

If there is no room for that, then the top of one's trombone stand
can be used to hook the lip of a cup mute. There is, however, the
danger of the cup mute self-starting to rotate around the top of the
trombone stand and fall, usually after one and a half rotations.
Carpet samples placed on the floor near likely impact points can
lessen the tink! and poonk! of falling mutes that brass players
know so well. :-)

If one's plunger has a lip on it, it can be hung on one of the set
screws or adjustment knobs on the side of one's trombone stand.

Other than that, if one must stand up to play the job, the mutes have
to be prepared for a fast change, placing the next mute on one's
music stand where, one hopes, it doesn't interfere with seeing music.
It is helpful to have the phrase Prepare Mute written over a
multiple bar rest shortly ahead of time so that the mute can be
located amongst its fellows and set in place.

Although not as good a sound, a secondary choice for bucket mute is
to bury the trombone bell deep into the stand or to write Hand Over
Bell. Sometimes a plunger, which might be faster to employ, can be
held half-open to simulate a bucket mute. Of course, none of these
sounds is the same as a bucket, but they might give you a pragmatic
option that is close.

On the lighter side, if the mutes must be kept on the floor, placing
an open beverage next to them adds incentive to bend down to retrieve
them. I recommend water, so as to be able to stand up again without
difficulty and to keep the inside of the trombone smelling better. It
also cleans up fairly easily after it gets knocked over. Do not use a
straw with your beverage, for it will poke some delicate part of your
face as you bend over to retrieve the pixie straight mute and
plunger. :-)

Best of luck,

Bill Huber

The MuteRack seems too flimsy, for sure. I can't see the real size
of the Jo-Ral holder, so I couldn't say anything about that. Both
unavailable, so it's moot anyway.

You know who would know? Jennifer Wharton! She plays Bdway pits all
the time (I've seen her twice!) and she probably used them.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of the trombone players on this list have any
recommendations for the clip-on trombone mute holders that clip to
the music stand? They'd need to support multiple mutes.

Here are two examples (don't know anything about either of them,
and also both are currently unavailable):

Neither of them seem like they'd accommodate a trombone bucket
mute. But if anyone has any experience with these things, I'd be
most grateful for your input.
