Re: [Finale] Ties across bar lines (playback bug?)

2013-01-01 Thread William Sinclair

I use a T or shift-T in the "simple entry" mode, so I assume it's a tie, not a
slur.
Is there a way to distinguish between the two? I never use a slur mark.

Besides, a slur is a tie mark between two UNEQUAL pitches, It makes no sense to
put a slur between EQUAL pitches. If you know of any exceptions, I would sure
like to see them.
I've never seen one in my 60 years of experience.

Actually, for some instruments, a slur is impossible - - - does Finale still
try to play them?

I have also noticed that when you tie a note across a measure line, it plays
the
note TWICE.
I pointed this out before several times. Why don't they fix this?

Are you sure you're using a tie, and not a slur? Slurs will be restruck; ties
won't.

The only time I get a tie restriking is when I tie to a note in another layer.

[Finale] Vol 118, issue 20 (Changing time signature from 12/8 to 4/4)

2012-12-23 Thread William Sinclair

If the eighth notes each count as 1/2 beat in the 4/4 piece, you can do a "Copy
and Paste" from one to the other. Were the 12/8 notes written as triplets (3
notes per beat)? You might have to change the time duration first.

Or you can do the Copy and Paste, then change the time duration as needed.

I suggest doing some experimentation.

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 113, Issue 20 (no Key signature)

2012-12-21 Thread William Sinclair

It looks like it has to be done in TWO STEPS:

(1) Use regular transposition to transpose the notes at whatever
 interval is needed, and then
(2) Transpose the KS back to C, saying "hold notes to pitches."

I don't see a way to do it in one step. Maybe the newer Finale allows that?

don't see the point of this software if used as a notation programme

verson 2.5 (!) adds the "long awaited feature" of display for transposing
instruments, as well as other unique features such as dynamics (!?!?!), slurs,
repeat / repeat endings and copy-paste.

can't open smf files, but i don't work with midi so maybe this is nothing

the only possible interest i can see is if the transcription engine was
effective beyond triplets. there is a palette hat seems to allow up to 7-let
with one click and a wildcard tuplet, but i never figured out how to get it tot
work.

as far as a notation programme goes, quite banal. editing entries is
incredibly clunky and seems very limited.

then it crashed and i said screw it

By "stave setup" do you mean the key signature tools option?

If I want to transpose from C up a major 6th for example, it puts 3 sharps in
the key
signature. Something I want to avoid. The other choices are "hold notes to
chromatic pitches"
or "hold notes enharmonically". I don't want those either - I don't WANT to
hold the notes.

I WANT TO TRANSPOSE IT and still have the no flats or sharps KS.

The other possibility on the staff tools is B flat or E flat transposition --
which doesn't wotk either.

If the music has no key signature, use the Chromatic Transposition option.
(Google the instructions if you don't know how.)

If the music has changing key signatures, but you don't want that
particular instrument to have a key signature (e.g., horn parts in Brahms),
do the following.

1. Set the staff to have an independent key signature.
2. Set the key sig for that staff equal to the key of transposition. (F for
horn in F)
3. Set normal transposition on the staff. (F transposition)

[Finale] Finale notation bug

2012-12-19 Thread William Sinclair
Hmm - I seem to have started a "row."

Well, I wanted to keep the same tempo per quarter note,
normally 4/4 measures,
but this particular phrase had an extra two beats in it.
I thought it would be easier to make a measure 6 beats, instead of
splitting it up into a 4/4 and a 2/4 measure.

In other words, it's not consistently 6/4 throughout, just an "odd ball"
measure the
composer threw in for everyone's amazement, and I wanted
to make it as easy to read as possible.

Your feedback is very interesting - -

[Finale] Is there an option for NO KEY SIGNATURE?

2012-12-19 Thread William Sinclair
When I asked about this some time ago,
someone remarked "well it is the key of C."
revealing their lack of knowledge.

In a complex orchestral piece, the composer sometimes does not want a key
signature,
since there would be a plethora of accidentals no matter what key you are in.
One example is 12-tone music a la Schoenberg.

The way Finale is set up, when you transpose to trumpet or some other
transposing
instrument, if you specify the key of C, the transposed instruments would have
a key
signature, something you DON'T WANT.

I am now working on a song that has so many key signature changes,
it's easier to just have NO key signature at all.

Is there an easy way around this?

[Finale] Chord notation bug (?)

2012-12-19 Thread William Sinclair
Something else I noticed -

I had a lead sheet with chords attached to the melody line.

I tried to transpose it without changing the melody, from C major to F major,
so I used "other" and specified "hold pitches modally" in the key signature
menu.

To my utter amazement, it transposed the chords ! ! !

Of course it was a train wreck then.

Interestingly, "hold pitches enharmonically" does not produce the bug.

In either case, you would NOT want to change the chord symbols.
Of course if you transpose the pitches in the usual way,
(for example concert to trumpet)
the chord symbols have to be transposed also.

[Finale] Notation bug

2012-12-17 Thread William Sinclair

I have not seen this before. Have any of you?

When I have a measure of 6/4, and I use SLASH notation,
it puts only 2 slashes for a 6/4 measure.

Is there a way around this problem? I want to avoid a HAND edit.

[Finale] Regarding "C" scores.

2012-10-12 Thread William Sinclair

Do you mean in the KEY of C, or in the Concert key (piano, bass, drums, etc.) ?
Most vocalists I work with want the score in her key to fit her vocal range.
Usually the female key is a major 4th or 5th above the "standard" key.
This fits an alto range. The "standard" key is for a male tenor generally.
That's because the setup costs are minimal, the melody fits on the staff.
