Sounds like the power supply. If the fan went off, or it has a secondary power
switch on the back (which would turn on the fan) and it's quiet in either
position, then likely the supply.

If it's the power supply, those are modular and can be replaced from a place
like Staples (or they used to carry them last year, anyway). Usually the
computer hardware is protected from damage when the power supply dies.

If it was built for you, then the person who did it would know and may be able
to drop in a new one and get it going again to transfer your registrations,
etc., to the new machine, because as far as six years old, yeah, time to
get a new one. I do a hardware upgrade of my system (usually from the inside)
every three years. Last time I had a complete new one built from scratch, from
ADK http://adkproaudio.com/ ... sounds like a big outfit, but it's a
relatively small team, and they can recommend based on your needs.

Good luck ... hate when that happens.

Do you think the Toshiba laptop described would make a good second PC,

Can't help you there -- I seriously dislike laptops for scoring, and don't use
them for any serious work. I have the big laptop running Linux, so no Finale
there. Laptop screens are too small for scoring work.

My little Dell netbook works great for special purposes and for keeping a
diary when traveling. I actually used the netbook for my opera -- I couldn't
afford to bring in a cimbalom player, so got a customized set of cimbalom
samples from Bolder Sounds and ran it using Finale's Aria player driven from
an external Kurzweil keyboard.

I do like my customized desktop system with its big monitors and fast hard
drives. (When I'm traveling, I pretty much switch to paper and pencil and
enter the music when I get back home.)

Re: [Finale] Help - computer is dead!

2012-12-18 Thread Williams, Jim
Ray,
Our family owns two Toshiba laptops. I bought an 875 as an early present to
myself--4 CPUs and 8 gb of ram.
Son has an earlier version (forget the number). Both are well-made workhorses
at reasonable prices at best buy.
On the down side, the hard drive in my new 875 spins at only 5400 rpm, rather
than the recommended 7200 for Garritan work.

I did notice a bit of popping in some finale files that I solved by increasing
latency.

When I get back from the Midwest band clinic, I'm going to attach my ASIO audio
interface, which will solve that issue.

As to video, the 875 has a big screen but I do the dual monitor thing with a
large pivoting screen.

Having said that, the Toshiba screens are big enough to do some good work when
not hooked into the second screen.

Finally, my new 875 came with Windows 8, which I do not like. I seriously
considered wiping the HDD when I got it and installing 7, but thought I'd go
with the flow. It reminds me of my iPad. ;-(

I am now happily working with finale 2012, and every Garritan library all the
way back to the original GPO...

Jim

Re: [Finale] Help - computer is dead!

2012-12-18 Thread Raymond Horton
My one away from home gig was with a dance company. i had written the
bulk of the work at home but had to do some rewrites on the road and
the weak laptop made it difficult. I wished many times I had packed
up my whole system in the car.

Right now I am typing on my wife's mini computer, which she loves, but...

At any rate, I am taking the desktop in for a new power supply or
whatever, in a few minutes. Shop where i bought it promises a low
bill and a 1-2 day turnaround, so i think I will survive this week,
and will put off the new system purchase a bit.
