hi jim, they would have had to move the date back
further than the last day before their vacation
for thenm to get it out of the way before the
vacation ;-)

no explanation, just a new deadline!

2015-06-09 Thread SN jef chippewa

hey robert, thanks.

the sudden change in the deadline was what put me off the most.

fair enough what you say, suppose that could make sense, but i also
suppose they know well ahead of time what their vacation dates are...
i doubt they change much year to year. i know the festival they play
in doesn't change dates, so they should have been able to
back-calculate.

it is also the SWR orchestra, so even though it is "normal" for the
kinds of things i work on, this group is quite used to it. so it
should be considered a "normal" job for them, right? 8-)

It's reasonable, but moving the deadline up is the problem. If it is a
difficulty, ask if you can get string and percussion parts to them by
deadline, the rest later.

2015-06-03 Thread Jim Gray
Hi Jef,

I would think this is a reasonable request to get the string parts to the
concertmaster and principles before their vacation starts for bowings and part
assignments (for wind played and percussionists, etc.). I have had to deal with
this for shows that are early in the season, so that the principles could truly
enjoy their vacation without any work load.

This is just my opinion and experience though, since I don’t know about your
exact situation. Has the librarian or admin. staff offered any explanation?

Re: [Finale] orchestra show of power? or justified deadline?

2015-06-03 Thread Robert Patterson
In my orchestra, the musicians have to have access to the parts at least a
month ahead of time. Working back from there, the librarian has to have
enough time for:

1. The concertmaster to decide on the bowings for Vln 1
2. The other principal strings to bow their parts based on step#1.
3. The librarian to copy the bowings to all the other copies of the parts.

Each step depends on the previous. I'd say that Aug 15 was cutting it quite
close. Given what I know your work is usually like, they may be wanting to
have the part available for the musicians as soon as they come back from
break. The means steps 1, 2, & 3 will probably take place during the
orchestra's vacation.

Hi jef,

I will forward this to Greg Hamilton, who know a thing or two about this kind
of issue. He is on the list, but I will make sure he sees it. He is in
contact with a number of orchestra librarians.

[Finale] orchestra show of power? or justified deadline?

2015-06-03 Thread SN jef chippewa

hey some of you work in orchestras, maybe someone knows what is with
this idea of demanding the composer to have the parts ready for a
date which happens to coincide with the start of the orchestra's
vacation time?

the deadline for delivery of materials for a contract i am going to
be working on in july just had its deadline moved ahead 2 weeks from
what was agreed to and signed in the composer's contract.

this is not the first time i have seen such deadlines. is it that
the librarians don't go on vacation and prepare the parts for the
musicians who are on vacation? i can't see any justification for
this request, and as we know, few composers have any real power to
stand up to the orchestral monster.

the original deadline was 15 august for an early october performance.
now they are demanding to have the parts before their vacation period
starts, whcih would mean materials lying on someone's desk as of 31
july.

yeah.
