Re: [Finale] Adobe Reader 7

2005-01-29 Thread David McKay
Thanks fro the "heads up" about Acrobat 7.
It works much better for me.
Last year I couldn't get the first Ac 6 to work
smoothly with Finale's online manual and tried a
number of things, but eventually when the update to Ac
6 came along, I could click on the online manual
button and it began to work.

But this new version 7 is fast and works better with
other programs, too. I only heard about it, here, so
thanks Harold!

I've just upgraded to Adobe Reader 7 and my startup times are similar to yours,
if not a little faster, maybe under 2 seconds. What a refreshing change!

I'm guessing you're on Windows as MS Internet Explorer development ended on the
Mac some time ago. Mac users shouldn't worry, I certainly wasn't forced into
upgrading anything when upgrading Adobe Reader in OSX - it's well worth doing.

I'm guessing here as to Adobe's reasoning, but the MS encryption components
are in IE. I never use IE or Outlook either, but had to upgrade IE in order
to install some applications last year. The vendor explained that because
registration was an online function, MS included the encryption components
in IE, not in Windows per se. (The issue of the integrated browser was
subject to a lawsuit several years ago.)

As I said, just guessing, but the IE upgrade didn't mean I ever used it
(and still don't -- I used Opera for years, and have now switched to
Firefox for browsing, and have used Eudora for email).

Another irritant with the latest Finale distribution:
I do not. and will not ever use Microsoft Internet Explorer, or Outlook
Express. Period. Ever.

I was strongly irritated when, while installing FIN 2005, I decided to
go ahead and install Acrobat Reader 6, only to find that AR6 would not
install without my upgrading IE.

Not in My lifetime I won't. I'll muddle through first, using
Ghostscript / Ghostview before I upgrade IE.

I expect, since I needed to upgrade IE to install AR-6, I'll also need
to do so to install AR-7, so that's not going to happen, either.

BTW Now you know why, a while back, I sought some feedback on the
option of asking for documentation to be in some format other than ~.pdf.
