Thanks for that advice as well. Interesting issues you face with creating
four-line material. I keep my old 1960-vintage Liber Usualis around just to
look at the notation now & then. I used to love to read that notation way
back when I actually performed early music.

By the way, what *was* that piece you posted as a Christmas gift to the
group back at the end of December?

Hi all,

I have been given a score for voice & guitar. The guitar sometimes is on
one staff, sometimes two. That's not a problem. I can optimize it away.

The voice is the issue. Only the first verse is to be written out with
music. The rest are to be words only. The composer wants the words to be in
place as if there were a staff there, but without a staff. In other words,
the lyrics have to be above the guitar, in the vocal rhythm.

OK. Based upon my experience, where I need a staff of four line /
square notation (for voice), and two staves of five line / standard
notation (for accompaniment) this is how I would approach this. Create
a separate staff for the lyrics, and fill it with rests as needed to
obtain the appropriate lyrics spacing.. Get the lyrics the way you want
them to appear, then hide the rests (using the "o" key method), and
redefine the staff so that no lines show. Even though the rests are
hidden, the lyrics will still be visible, and for your purposes, this is
complete.

For those who would otherwise ask, what I do next, is to use the
true-type fonts available from St. Meinrad's abbey in St. Meinrad, IN
USA, and create the necessary staff of four-line music as a text block,
arranging the spacing so it fits over the lyrics as I intend.

Thanks for that. I've been checking "hide staff" and everything would go
away, instead of 0-line staff. I got freaked out by lyrics being especially
painful.

I think I got it now!

Actually, also just set it to blank notation under alternate styles and you won't have to get rid of your noteheads after all. Just checked that out!

What if you enter the music, all the way through.

Then for the verses after the first, create a staff style that is a 0-line staff and shows nothing in the options.

Then, go into speedy or simple edit and hide the note heads.

When I tried just applying a hide staff style, it did make the lyrics disappear as well. I think this option will work, and if you are in speedy, you can just hit H and right arrow over and over again. It’s not super elegant, but I think it’ll make it work for you.  Plus, if the music has to come back, you can just unhide. There might even be an easier way to hide all the notes. I just didn’t check into that.
