Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-26 Thread Joel Daynes
I tried your suggestion, and while it ran successfully, I'm still seeing
the same errors. This is very strange, as my Fink installation on my old
machine (OS X 10.2.8) worked like a champ.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks-
Joel

Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-26 Thread Joel Daynes
Doing so does not include /sw in the poth (/sw/bin and /sw/sbin). manually
adding these seems to correct the problem. Interestingly, terminals opened
from Apple terminal do include these in the path, but the Apple X11
terminal does not. Do you know how to convince the X11 terminal to get the
same environment as Apple's terminal?

Thanks-
Joel

Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-26 Thread Joel Daynes
This corrected the file not found errors, but now when I run ethereal
(which is really why I wanted to do all of this in the first place) I get:

sudo ethereal
dyld: ethereal can't open library: /sw/lib/libdl.0.dylib (No such file or
directory, errno = 2)
Trace/BPT trap

I have tried removing ethereal (apt-get remove ethereal) and re installing
(apt-get install ethereal), but I still get this error. I know that this
is not ethereal support, but it appears to me that a dependency may not
have been satisfied during my install. Is there a way to force a fresh
install of the desired package AND dependent packages?

Thanks again for the help-
Joel

sudo apt-get install gives me the dpkg-split errors.

Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-27 Thread Joel Daynes
I tried doing what you suggested, with the following result:

sudo apt-get install dlcompat-shlibs
Password:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Sorry, dlcompat-shlibs is already the newest version.
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:

Conflicts: system-xfree86 but 2:4.3.99-2 is to be installed

installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or

Having not done a whole lot of dependency solving on my own in the past,
how do I go about solving the unmet dependencies listed? I tried apt-get
-f install, as it suggests, with the following result:

I did as you recommended, and fink list xfree86 now returns this:

Is this how it should look?

Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-27 Thread Joel Daynes
I went ahead and did sudo apt-get install dlcompat-shlibs, and it again
complained about unmet dependencies. It also said that dlcompat-shlibs was
already installed, so I tried to remove it, with more of the same
dependency errors. All of this effort has really been to get ethereal
working, and I noticed that ethereal needs gtk+, so I tried installing
that with the following result:

 sudo apt-get install gtk+
Password:
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
xfree86: Depends: xfree86-shlibs (>= 4.3.99.16-2) but it is not going to
be installed
   Conflicts: xfree86-base-threaded
Conflicts: system-xfree86 but 2:4.3-2 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

I'm still at a bit of a loss...

Re: [Fink-beginners] Error installing packages

2004-02-27 Thread Joel Daynes
I did as you suggested (wuen reinstalling the X11User and X11SDK, it said
it would require 0 MB of disc space, and the button in the installer said
"Upgrede"--is there some way to fully uninstall them first?). I'm
getting gtk errors when I try to run ethereal, but this may be due to the
fact that I'm getting an outdated version when I try to install it
(ethereal, that is). I'm going to try to get the current stable version to
see if that remedies the problem...

WOOHOO Installing the current stable version of ethereal (after
following your suggestions) was successful, and it appears that other X

Thank you very much, Alexander, for all of your help and patience with me.

[Fink-beginners] please.. help with ethereal install

2004-03-01 Thread Joel Daynes
Hello-
I recently had problems installing ethereal as well on Panther,
and it ended up that I had to build the latest stable release from source
(I believe it is version 0.10.0a-11). I did this through Fink commander by
right-clicking on the name and selecting Source -> Install. I had
tried updating the binary installation several times, but got the
older version every time. Once I did the source install of the most
recent stable version (which the fink web site lists as 0.10.0a-11), it
worked like a champ. Might want to give that a try.

[Fink-beginners] Need help with KDE and related packages

2004-03-12 Thread Joel Daynes
Hello-
I am trying to run some KDE apps (particularly kompare, which I
installed via Fink Commander), and when I try to run kompare, I get a
huge amount of what I assume is debug spewed to the console, and then a
dialog opens, asking me for the files to compare. When I give it files,
I get an error that says "Did not find our Part!" and Kompare dies.
Perhaps the first question should be, do I have to specifically
install and/or run any other KDE-related packages in order to get a
single KDE related package to work? I'm new with using GNOME or
KDE-based packages on OS X, so forgive me if this is just a dumb
question.

Thanks-

Re: [Fink-beginners] Need help with KDE and related packages

2004-03-12 Thread Joel Daynes
I have kdesdk3 and kdesdk3-base installed, but haven't explicitly
installed anything else KDE-related (aside from dependencies that Fink
Commander worked out on its own).

For what it's worth, when Kompare tells me that it can't find it's
part, I see these lines in the console:

kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: dlcompat: Symbol
"_init_komparepart" not found
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: The library komparepart does
not offer an init_komparepart function

Any other thoughts?

[Fink-beginners] Can I go from unstable to stable?

2004-03-26 Thread Joel Daynes
Hello-
I followed the instructions here:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php?phpLang=en#unstable

to use unstable packages, and I'm wondering if there will be any harm
in undoing these changes and going back to using stable code?

Joel
