gdb tells me that the bus error for ls appears in the same function

and lynx.

The really weird thing is now: I rebuilt gettext (after backing up the
old deb and removing fileutils so that fink rebuild would work,
reinstalling fileutils afterwards). Bus error disappeared. Reinstalled
the old version of gettext. Bus error does not reappear!

So prebinding may have something to do with this after all, because it
is the only imaginable cause of differences between the previous
situation where I have bus errors and the new one where I haven't.

Don't think so - all my .debs' have been, and still are, self-built. So
we can't really put the blame on the bindist.

Ah, OK. Sorry for having been a bit sarcastic then. Of course, I don't
know whether the bus errors in lynx and minicom are related to the one
you are seeing in ls, other than that they disappeared when gettext was
recompiled, but I still have the 'old' gettext deb, because it sits in
the 10.2-gcc3.3 tree and was not overwritten by the new one.

Also, I just recompiled fileutils-4.1-4 on my 10.2.8 system and got a
very gratifying ;-) bus error from ls! So I can send you a choice of
gettext debs, but I'll investigate a little myself first.

[Fink-devel] fileutils / gettext problem -> need your help

2003-11-15 Thread Max Horn
Hiya folks,

yesterday I encountered a potential show stopper bug, apparently in
gettext. I need your help to analyze it since I (stupidly) overwrote my
bad .deb files, so now I can't find out what was wrong.

But let me start at the beginning. The problem occurred like this:

1) I "fink rebuild fileutils ; fink install fileutils" (my new version
4.1-4, but it also happened with 4.1-3)
2) After that, doing a seemingly innocent "ls" resulted in a bus error.
Ouch!

Checking with gdb, it crashed when calling a gettext function. So I did
a "fink rebuild gettext", and that fixed it. I didn't think anymore
about it, believing it was just something odd on my system.
Now today, dmalloc / David encountered the exact same problem. My fix
of rebuilding gettext helped him, too.

Now what I ask of all of you: if you can, please try to do what I did
(i.e. rebuild & install fileutils). If you also get a bus error upon
"ls", I'd be grateful if you could email me your gettext .deb files
(important: please don't just email them directly to me, first ask me
if I still need them - I don't want 20 people emailing me those .deb's
:-). Also if you remember, it would be helpful to know if you got those
.deb files from the bindist or if you compiled them yourself (in case
you remember).
This way, I can compare the "bad" with the "good" gettext to find out
what exactly caused the problem. This way we can decide how to cope
with this issue and if there is anything we can do to fix it, in case
it affects many fink users potentially.

Cheers,

Max

[Fink-devel] FYI: package developers on 10.3

2003-11-15 Thread Benjamin Reed
If you're developing new packages on 10.3, please start the Revision at
"10" so that it's easier to backport them to 10.2-gcc3.3 without
conflicts (if it turns out there needs to be differences).

For me, the bus error for both minicom and lynx disappeared after I
recompiled the gettext package ("fink rebuild gettext").

I guess the 10.3 gettext package should get a higher revision number
than the 10.2-gcc3.3 one to force its recompilation (maintainer CCed).

This is the wrong address, I am not the gettext maintainer anymore -
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is.
