[Fink-devel] Fink MIrror Report (Thank you Jesse)

2006-10-04 Thread David H.
Hello.

I just wanted to let you know that I am aware of most of the Problems
that you reported Jesse.

My main concern is to always ensure the availability of the Master
Servers, while the children should be self organised. Much to my
demise I have to admit that I have not put much time lately into
checking the children. Dead children should simply be removed from the
mirror rotation, that is also a reason why we have that as an
installable info file.

If you feel you have the time and you are interested in writing a set
of scripts which performs those checks automatically,. warns the
maintainer and adheres to a simple three strikes out rule engine,.
then please let me know.

I agree in the case of a python "program".

However, if the package just processses a bunch of scripts that don't care
about what python you use then it seems a bit harsh to make people build a full
python distro when the system-installed one will be fine.

There are no binary files that link to libraries in this package--just shell
scripts, python scripts, and text files.

The last note on this package in the commits from the maintainer says "use
system python" and the CompileScript explictly calls /usr/bin/python, so it
clearly was a choice, and will build the same way on any Mac of the same OS
version (if they change their python that's another matter, of course). If it
was just built with "python", then there would be a problem.

Possible, but I'm pretty sure the maintainer checked that out in this case, and
he'll let you know in a couple of weeks.

[Fink-devel] NDLUG Fink Status

2006-10-04 Thread OSM
Hi,

Sorry to say that for right now NDLUG will not be carrying Fink. A
usage study showed that Fink was not popular enough to warrant the
space on the server. In the (near) future, we hope to have more
space, and we may be mirroring Fink again. But for right now, we will
not.

Sorry for any confusion,
Andy, NDLUG FTP Admin

Responding to:

You are signed up as a contact point for a Fink mirror, and, when I
just tried your mirror, it was down for one reason or another. Is
this permanent? Are you still interested in mirroring Fink? Please
let me know, or just drop a message to fink-
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . Thanks!

Jesse Weinstein, Fink Mirror Assistant

dmacks fixed it. the package is sconsa python program typically also requires other libraries to run. And if one has installed those libraries under fink python, then it won't run elsewhere. Not only that but it may need to load extra config files or settings that will work best from the fink version over a vanilla person.

Care to remind us what package this is from?

If the package just needs a python interpreter to run a script, I think we
don't necessarily mandate using a fink-installed python.
