[Fink-users] OpenGL and xscreensaver

2004-04-09 Thread Matthew Cook
I am running OS X 10.3.3, apple's X11 XFree86 4.3.0, and a current
version of Fink.

I have installed the xscreensaver-gtk2 package from source, and things
went well for the most part. I had to install an extra library that
was not in the dependency, but things worked out in the end.

Once installed, I was looking through the different screen savers with
xscreensaver-demo and i ran into a problem. All of the 2D screensavers
work fine, but none of the OpenGL 3D (gears, GLMatrix, etc), I just get
a black screen. I can turn on fps and other info text, which displays
fine, but over a black screen.

I though maybe I needed mesa, but it looks like mesa is part of
rootless xwindows now. I also tried installing glut and gtkglarea2 as
they looked like important OpenGL packages, but they didnt help. This
is a first generation Titanium Powerbook and has a weakish graphics
card, but OS X programs using 3D seem to work fine (atom in a box,
armigetron, bzflag). I figured if it didnt agree with the graphics
chipset, the system would default to processing in software.

Has anyone had trouble with this? Anyone have this working? Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
-Matthew

But I'd like to use different themes too, those gnome widgets are kinda

On further investigation it seems this is related to the
gnome-settings-daemon. If I start x with a full gnome-session, all the
apps pick up the gnome theme and font settings. If I start them outside
of a gnome-session they don't.

I can also start up X11, start gnome-settings-daemon manually (spews
errors but works), and then start the apps and they pick up the prefs
fine too.

If I could find a way to launch gnome-settings-daemon without from my
.xinitrc it'd probably be ok, but I can't seem to get that to work well.

I suppose what I really want is a rootless Gnome session - but from my
reading that doesn't seem to be possible these days. Right?

I believe it was libglade2.

I'm afraid i dont have a copy of the error, but best i can remember,
the compile process went fine through all the dependencies, and when it
got to xscreensaver itself, there was a message surrounded by ###'s
saying that xscreensaver-demo needed gtk+, which was not there, but
that it would use gtk+2, and something about libglade. After the
message, dpkg errored out, so i looked through the package list and saw
libglade and libglade2, and installed the newer one. Once installed, i
resent the command to install xscreensaver and it went fine.

is not customized yet, as I am still learning the ropes. If you wish to
help with editing or customizing drop me a line off list and you get

Your help would be very much appreciated. The more people poke around

You should put non-official .info files in

What I'd do is removing all gnome-vfs stuff either 2 or not just to be

Then rebuild gnome-vfs2-ssl, then rebuild bluefish.

I had another unrelated problem, and that was that I had another
version of libpng in my path (part of the Staden package that I
installed myself in /usr/local) so the splashscreen didn't even come
up. If I move /usr/local out of the way, the splash screen works, but
it doesn't work if I move it back again :( Does this mean I can't use
both without moving directories around??
Move the /usr/local out of the way while compiling bluefish (or any
other package), then when you put it again in /usr/local.

Re: [Fink-users] bluefish bus error

2004-04-09 Thread David Orlovich
Thanks for the help Michèle - your suggestion worked - almost I
removed all gnome-vfs files and that solved much of the problem - it
now runs! With /usr/local renamed as /usr/local.temp I can run
bluefish-0.13 without a problem (I compiled this in fink using the
.info file from Kevin Horton (pasted below FYI)).

However, if I move /usr/local.temp back to /usr/local, it still works
but the splash screen is blank (except for the Creating main gui line
at the bottom) and I get a whole lot of messages telling me about the
conflicting versions of libpng as pasted below. In some ways I guess I
could put up with this, but it is a bit messy - I'm not sure how to
tell it to use the correct libpng version that fink installed, instead
of the one in /usr/local/... My /usr/local wasn't in place at compile
time.

Anyway, here is the error output I'm getting when I run bluefish with
/usr/local in place:

Thanks for the help Michèle - your suggestion worked - almost I
removed all gnome-vfs files and that solved much of the problem - it
now runs! With /usr/local renamed as /usr/local.temp I can run
bluefish-0.13 without a problem (I compiled this in fink using the
.info file from Kevin Horton (pasted below FYI)).
You cannot leave /usr/local in place, because even if you compile it
without it, when you use bluefish, the library is called, and
presumably /usr/local is before /sw in your PATH.

Have you . /sw/bin/init.sh in your .xinitrc, or .profile if you use
bash, zsh; or source /sw/bin/init.sh if you use tcsh? If not, put it
just after the initialization line.

And call bluefish with: . /sw/bin/init.sh; bluefish (bash, zsh) or
source /sw/bin/init.sh; bluefish (tcsh) if you use Apple's X11.

If that does not work, move /usr/local away when you use bluefish.

And please, cut your mail, I don't need three times the errors :-)

right - fair enough

Have you . /sw/bin/init.sh in your .xinitrc, or .profile if you use
bash, zsh;
yes

tried that - same thing occurs

If that does not work, move /usr/local away when you use bluefish.

OK well that's what I'll have to do.

sorry!
