I built this version on a dual G5 without error. I suspect this is a
problem with your configuration. Some wild guess below.

The declaration of empty_arg is in the header file utils.h. Do you
perhaps have another utils.h sitting in /sw/include or in
/usr/local/include that shadows octave's own utils.h?

There it is. Please try to find out where this comes from

   dpkg -S include/utils.h

No package should be allowed to install header files with such generic
names directly into /sw/include.

I don't have this one (and octave did build fine here ... :)
What does
dpkg -S /sw/include/utils.h
give ?

I suspect it's libcdparanoia0-dev. We had this same discussion more than
a year ago about the octave-forge package which has now

BuildConflicts: libcdparanoia0-dev

CVS log:

date: 2005/07/13 00:12:37; author: crhalpin; state: Exp; lines: +2 -1
BuildConflict with libcdparanoia0-dev, silly headers of the same name.
Thanks to jfm for figuring this out.

$ dpkg -S include/utils.h
coot-dev: /sw/include/utils.h
ccp4-g77:
/sw/share/xtal/ccp4-6.0.2/src/harvest_app_/pdb_extract/regex-v2.1/include/utils.h

I've removed coot-dev and am attempting the build again now.

Addition: I didn't notice that octave already has this, too, so it can't
be the same error.

Right: I do have libcdparanoia0-dev installed, but it installs now
(since a commit by dmacks on march 21):
/sw/include/libcdparanoia/utils.h
which means, all those BuildConflicts (including in gnome-vfs and
gome-vfs-ssl)
should probably have disappeared now ...

... or rather be replaced by BuildConflicts: coot-dev.

I am CCing the maintainer of the coot package. Maybe he finds a way to
hide this pernicious /sw/include/utils.h someplace else?

I don't know of any software that would actually need coot-dev. I could
just delete the header file (or all of coot-dev for that matter).
