That's OK once you've realised you have a problem, but I
didn't for some time because if you've got fink.conf correct
but the dists link wrong, pretty much nothing gets updated
so errors don't show up: self-update is fetching the correct
tree, but installing is using the (not updated) old one. I
looked in the installing and updating fink sections
hoping to find out what to do when updating OSX and didn't
find mention of it, though it must be a fairly common thing
people need to do. I then didn't recognise the heading in
the FAQ (new developer tools) as also describing my
situation (new version of OSX which includes new dev tools
but that's not the main way I was thinking about it...)

As ever, seems like all the info is there, but maybe could
use another pointer to it under the downloads section (where
the upgrade matrix lives) and under FAQ 4 about upgrading
fink. I didn't scan through FAQ 5 on using fink because I
thought I had an upgrade problem...

cheers,

I'm still struggling here...the faq says rerun inject.pl
to fix things, but my copy of inject.pl is too old -- dates
from 2002 and first tests for the existence of
/sw/fink/10.2, which I long since removed! I tried to get a
newer copy of inject.pl by downloading the latest fink
install, but it is too deeply buried inside the package
contents to be extracted (by the non-techie) without
installing the whole thing.

My primary concern here is not to lose the set of packages I
currently have installed, and to keep all the still useful
.debs -- I can't afford the compiling time to redo
everything from source (though of course I will recompile
anything that needs it).

What is the best way forward from here*?

* here is the result of upgrading OSX from 10.2.8 to 10.3
with an up-to-date unstable fink on 10.2-gcc3.3; editing
fink.conf to point to 10.3, but failing to fix
/sw/fink/dists to point to 10.3 for a while, then fixing it
by hand, then running self-update, which updated fink
correctly, but half the useful debs are still in the
10.2-gcc3.3 tree so I can't uninstall/reinstall to swap
between conflicting packages without recompiling them.

fink --version:
Package manager version: 0.21.1
Distribution version: 0.7.0.cvs

I don't mind installing a new fink from scratch so long as I
can harvest and reuse the .debs

thanks!

You can always install .debs using sudo dpkg -i.
You can also use apt-get as soon as you put a line like
deb file:/sw/fink/10.2-gcc3.3 unstable main crypto
into your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file and make a symlink
  /sw/fink/10.2-gcc3.3/dists - .
Whether this will really work is a different question. You need all the
right dependencies and the right versions of the libraries, too.

In my personal experience, the time and energy you spend with
incompatibilities and weird bugs is better spent with recompiling your
important packages. You will most likely end up recompiling them anyway.

I have done and observed at least 5 Fink upgrades from 10.2 to 10.3, and
the quickest ones were complete reinstallations of Fink from scratch
(using the bindist where possible).

OK, I guess it isn't simple. In the absense of warnings to
the contrary on the fink website, I had thought that fink
would just sort itself out when I went from Jaguar to
Panther two weeks ago, or I would have sorted it all then
when I had time. Problem is now I'm up against a deadline,
I'll be on the road from tomorrow with limited online
downloading opportunities. I'm prefetching the sources
where possible, but there's days of compiling to redo all
the stuff I have installed and use on a daily basis. If I
still had my dual G4 up and running I'd have set it going
and grabbed the results for my TiBook.

I guess I'll find then mv all the .debs (and sources)to
somewhere safe, reinstall fink from scratch, point apt-get
at the .deb stash, binary install what I can and see how
things stand. I suspect most will be fine, I was running
Xfree4.4 before and after the OSX upgrade, so that hasn't
changed, I did an archive install of 10.3 so that is clean
and I don't have anything in /usr/local.

BTW, I'm pretty sure xfig 3.2.4 still has a resizing bug,
I'll try to confirm that once I've got my system
straightened out and can swap between 3.2.3d and 3.2.4
and the versions of gs smoothly...

Many thanks for the help,

Is there something I should rebuild that might fix this?

One thing to make sure is that you rebuilt xaw3d since you last changed
your X11. Same for libjpeg.

I searched the archives for this one, and found your answer

this has been fixed. But I don't! I did a self-update and

gs 8.00-3 is the one I have archived. I see there is now gs
8.11-1 so I guess I will try it once the rebuilds finish.
There are various archive postings from me on this problem,
it seemed to interact badly with xfig (crashes that
corrupted the files I was working on), and I also found ps
files that it hung while processing (just to view them in
gv). In each case, gs 6 succeeded where gs 8 had failed.
OTOH I could never figure out whether xfig 3.2.4 had its own
bugs as well, but I'm suspicious.
