Hello Eduardo, in my case what happened was that the path variable of
the windows operating system was not updated to the folder where I had
firebird and on the other hand, depending on the client, I should put
gds32.dll in that folder and / or fbclient.dll too to make sure that any
software could access them.

Hello Eduardo,

you might want to check the setting DatabaseAccess in firebird.conf. If
it is set to None or Restrict for some reason the behaviour you describe
can happen.

Check that disk letter you used is really "C" and not just something that

similar, like, for example, "С".

2018-02-20 Thread peshk...@mail.ru [firebird-support]
Jorge, regarding access to /data/local/tmp. Some time ago when I was making
Android port this was close to recommended place for tmp files on android. See
for example
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21105281/where-is-the-tmp-in-android
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21105281/where-is-the-tmp-in-android

Surpise but currently I also can't access that directory any more, even on
physically same device which was used for tests that time. I.e. appears to be
SW upgrade result.

The problem is where should we place tmp files (including lock files and other
shared files) now. Application cache may be at any moment cleaned which will
cause problems if fb engine is running. Do you have better ideas than
/storage/emulated/legacy/firebird ?

My mistake to assume that the structure are the same from windows.

Keeping the original structure does the job.

But I think that the FB team should work on this, since the process of
installing on Android is not a easy job.

Because there are a fixed structure is impossible to use the lib folder to
install the native libraries.

Embedded engine doesn't verify user password but it still requires correct
user
name and checks all SQL operations against it. I guess, you provide no user
name
and engine uses OS user name. Obviously, it have no SQL privileges.

So, provide correct user name when attaching to database (password could be
omitted in embedded case).

Good news!!!
With the tip of Neil I found a strange solution. I did the following:

Try to open a database file with IB_SQL. I couldn't.
Restart Firebird service.
Try to open a database file with IB_SQL. I couldn't.
Make a copy of the original Firebird.conf, which has the commented line
#DatabaseAccess = Full.

In Firebird.conf, uncomment the line DatabaseAccess = Full.
Restart Firebird service.
Try to open a database file with IB_SQL. I could!
Delete the modified Firebird.conf and restore the original one, which
has the commented line #DatabaseAccess = Full.

Restart Firebird service.
Try to open a database file with IB_SQL. I could!

Conclusion: Now I have the same Firebird.conf as an hour ago, but
everything is working fine.

As you say, that sounds to be related, but unfortunately I found that
line commented as it is by default. Every line related with
DatabaseAccess is commented. I even compared the whole file
firebird.conf with the one in another computer with the same Windows
(in which one I don't have the problem), and they are identical.

I thought of restarting Firebird anyway, but I can´t do it now because

In your firebird.conf file, is the following line uncommented (# removed
from the start), if it is add the hash, restart Firebird and try again.

# DatabaseAccess = None

According to the notes in the default firebird.conf file having that
line enabled would mean only files referenced in aliases.conf could be
opened which sounds a lot like your problem.

# Database Paths/Directories

#

# DatabaseAccess may be None, Full or Restrict. If you choose Restrict,

# provide ';'-separated trees list, where database files are stored.

# Relative paths are treated relative to RootDirectory entry

# (see above). Default value 'Full' gives full access to all files

# on your site. To specify access to specific trees, enum all required

# paths (for Win32 this may be something like 'C:\DataBase;D:\Mirror',

# for unix - '/db;/mnt/mirrordb'). If you choose 'None', then only

# databases listed in aliases.conf can be attached.

This is the intended behaviour if you have DatabaseAccess = None

The databases where generated with the same version of Firebird. And

I can even generate the database in the same computer (using an alias)

You're not switching between 32 bit and 64 bit versions of
Firebird are you?

I'm not sure exactly when the change occurred but I remember
similar issues trying to open a 32 bit generated database with a 64 bit
version of Firebird or vice versa. It's definitely okay with v2.5 but
not sure about v2.1 as it's been some time since I use v2.1 for

When you open it successfully on another computer, is it the

Version of engine doesn't matter in this case. ODS does.
ODS used in 2.0.1 allowed malformed string literals in stored objects and
data tables,
ODS for 2.5 prohibit that.
If you see this error, it means that you'd better migrate database between
version by
creation of brand new database from script and then pump data from old
database. During
this process you'll encounter errors that you must fix by changing script or
source database.
-FIX_* switches must be used very carefully by experienced DBA only. In
wrong hands
they will lead to data corruption beyond recovery.

P.S. All columns are UTF8, and that has always been that way since we started
using FB.

[firebird-support] FB 2.5 backed-up DB cannot be restored, msg about Malformed String and "Use -FIX_FSS_DATA option."

2018-02-20 Thread dco...@sympatico.ca [firebird-support]
We are in the process of upgrading our app from using FB 2.0.1 to FB 2.5, and
have a just a few users beta testing that.

I have a DB from a user of that beta version of our software, that has been
opened successfully in our app using FB 2.5, and that seems to behave
successfully in the app. It can be backed up successfully with gbak, but if we
try to restore it with gbak, we get:

 gbak: ERROR:Malformed string
gbak: ERROR:Invalid data detected. Use -FIX_FSS_DATA option.
gbak:Exiting before completion due to errors

I've Googled a lot about this and that -FIX_FSS_DATA option seems to only
really be relevant when restoring DBs from much earlier versions of FB - but
this is from the same version! Also, I tried adding that option to the gbak
restore command line, and the result is the same failure.

I did get the impression it could be about data types, perhaps particularly in
BLOB fields. So I narrowed it down to the BLOB fields in our DB, and it turned
out that there was one value in in field (type BLOB SUB_TYPE TEXT) in one row
of the DB, that if I cut the value out in our UI, saved the row, then pasted
the same value back in again in our UI, and saved the row again, the problem
goes away - a backup made after that can be restored!

I cannot see anything funny in the value - it's just some text, with a couple
of embedded CR/LF pairs in it.

This is obviously extremely worrisome, because we are not aware of any
previous user when we used FB 2.0.1 that ever could not restore a backup. It is
not good if we are providing software where in some cases, backups users make
cannot be restored! And we don't even know how to detect such a problem, since
there didn't appear to be anything wrong with the text in that problem field.

 Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

For example, let's suppose I have the database C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB

methods, but in some computers the first three methods return

For example, let's suppose I have the database C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB
and I try to open it with IB_SQL (from IBObjects).

If I use C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB I get "unavailable database".
If I use SERVERNAME:C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB I get "unavailable database".
If I use \\SERVERNAME\C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB I get "unavailable database".

If I modify firebird.conf creating the alias
MYDATABASE=C:\Test\MYDATABASE.FDB, then using MYDATABASE I can open the
database.

In almost every computer with any Windows version (XP, 7, 10, 2003,
2008, 2012, 2016) I can open the database using every one of the four
methods, but in some computers the first three methods return
"unavailable database" and I can open the database only using an alias.
Now I am having the problem in a computer with Windows Server 2008 R2
Standard with Service Pack 1, but I remember having this problem in
other computers from time to time.

Any ideas of which may be the reason? ... and the solution?

Thanks in advance. Regards

Eduardo
