Dealing with Pain

2000-08-17 Thread Sam Sue Banks
This message is from: Sam Sue Banks [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Since we are on the subject of pain, I just wanted to say Thank
you to the person who posted a few months ago about the book _Pain
Free_ by Pete Egoscue. I think it was Lisa Pedersen who mentioned it
about helping plantar fasciitis.
I have had chronic back pain for many years, and that is why I got
my first Fjord - riding the big horses hurt, so I thought I would drive
a Fjord when I couldn't ride. After the post about the book and looking
at the reviews on Amazon.com, I got the _Pain Free_ book and started on
the exercises for the lower back. I was skeptical that it would help as
quickly and as well as the customer reviews had said, after all, I had
gone to a physical therapist who rides dressage to get a program made
for me, which only made me feel worse. I thought Egoscue's theory made
sense, though.
The lower back exercises were easy to do for someone with back
pain (most exercises aren't) and have really helped. After three weeks
on that program in June, I started one of his other conditioning
programs in another Egoscue book _Health Through Motion_ to address my
twisted torso position. My chiropractor is amazed I am now riding 4
times a week (not hard riding yet!) and my body is doing better than
ever.
My sister and mother were so impressed with my improvement that
they have started doing the exercises. My mother had knee pain which has
been injected with steroids in the past, and she is so much better that
she is buying extra books to hand out to friends. My book is lent out
again, too.

This message is from: Betsy Bauer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello Group,
I remember there were some of you who were shopping for Grey Fjord Mares.
Would you please email me, I happen to have one that is new to my service.
Also, many other fjords available in US and Canada.

Does anyone know of a fjord who has jumping training that would go 4' in
competitive divisions?

Re pooping in the stalls. My horses also have free access to stalls and
only my huge one leaves elephant droppings. One days fills the barrow. He
is a pig. The fjord Gunnar and mare Sis never use their stall unless locked
in for over two hours. I have noticed in the pasture if I clean up the
droppings and pile them in one or two spots, for awhile Gunnar and Sis will
poop in those spots. I suspect it is when I put the huge Charlie in the
field that he poops where ever he is and gets the others started. So it
looks like it may be they like certain spots to poop, and then there is
Charlie.

plantar fascitis and pain

2000-08-17 Thread McInvailles
This message is from: McInvailles [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Sue and Tish,

Hopefully by now, your bodies are not in as much pain as previously...
For acute injured areas: ice for 20 minutes (not too long or it will
cause swelling...akin to frostbite) and do this 3 times a day. Gently
stretch sore muscles to prevent tightening. Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
is more effective for pain relief if taken with Tylenol. They work on
different pain pathways and are actually better than either
individually. You are right that Ibuprofen can irritate your stomach,
so take it with food. It is dose dependent (more mg's more misery
likely). You can substitute longer acting non-steroidal such as
Aleve (Naprosyn) which last eight to twelve hours and often have less
stomach irritation (still take with food). For plantar fascitits, it
may help to use a gel pad in your shoes. Avoid walking long distances
on uneven ground. It is an overuse injury and often associated with
bone spur. It takes a long time to heal...6 weeks to 6 months,
depending on severity and how kind you are to yourself. always
remember, if things don't seem to be healing, see someone about it.

If you are more inclined to herbal/homeopathic remedies, try arnica
for an acute injury. Remember, no food for 20 minutes after taking it.
No coffee for 24 hrs at least.

Hope it is helpful. Nothing beats someone actually taking a look,
though.

buddies :)
