My farrier, in his 60s, said the only serious injury he ever had was from an
old, put-the-kids-on-him-and-let-him-go gelding, because the horse was so
gentle and easy that he forgot to use normal caution. Wonder why working
with my girls brought that story to mind for him? (LOL)

Nebraska Horse Expo

2001-01-14 Thread whitedvm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lincoln, Nebraska has just built a nice new horse show facility and to
kick it off they are holding a horse expo the first weekend of March.

For a fee, an association receives one stall for a horse and an
additional stall as a hospitality/display area. Additional stalls can be
reserved for more horses. You also receive a 10 minute exhibit time in
the arena each day (3 days) while they announce a little speech about
your breed and/or activity.

A few of us in the area plan on exhibiting the fjords and perhaps doing a
MWFHC/NFHR info booth. I would like to invite anyone else that is
interested to participate with us, whether you would like to bring your
fjord or just help man the info booth.

Please, contact me for more info if you are interested at

Maybe you could send Osa out to hang out with Pferd for a while. One
of his favorite games is to chase wild turkeys while we're out
driving. Wild turkeys will NOT leave a path through the woods if
they can avoid it. So we have on several occasions surprised a big
old Tom dusting in the middle of the path and then had a chase at
full-out trot for a couple miles. Other times I've spotted flocks
ahead and put him into a trot to blast thru them like a bowling ball

deer but they don't stick to the path like turkeys, so I have to cut
  those chases short.

LOL! Yes, the chickens in my situation were quite tame. But they slept
under a tarp at night - that was the biggest scary, a moving,
clucking tarp : )

I would suggest doing simple clicker requests in the vicinity of the
turkeys ... like walk, whoa, walk, whoa. Target a ball or something.
Easy stuff, to get her attention on you rather than those horse-eating
turkeys!

I achieved great success (big pat on the back!) with Tommes and the
spooky corner of the arena. Why it's spooky I'm not sure. Could be
because it borders the neighbor's ranch where other horses/cattle/
machinery can be heard but not clearly seen through the fence. Well,
Tommes normally avoided the corner, and when guided into it, powered
out unseating me twice! We practiced walking/trotting on the rail,
clicking for good gaits, transitions, whoas etc. I clicked closer and
closer to the bad spot (the horse automatically stops when he hears
the click and looks for his treat). Before I knew it, we were smack
dab in the middle of that corner! Click!! Now he will go deeply into
the corner and stay nicely on the rail without me having to correct
or hold him there with a rein or leg. The worst I get now in the
formerly spooky corner is an ear flick towards the neighbor's
property.

I'm a believer!

Just goes to show, you can never get too complacent. In the back of my
mind, always is a story of a very competent trainer, walking his old
mare to a pasture (or somewhere). This mare was perfectly trustworthy.
But the man ended up dead with a hoofprint on his head. Who knows what
happened? Gawd, I don't even remember when I heard this story, or who
it was about, but it made an indelible impression on me to NEVER be
too confident.

However, I'm fighting that too! Just came back from Day 1 of a Dr.
Ritter clinic. I STILL have a tendency to lean forward in anticipation
of a more forward gait. He could tell it is from an old fear, and I
will NEVER become the type of rider I want to be till I conquer that.
The fear stems from my ex-TB. 16.3 and threw me HARD. I was probably
10 feet in the air at the top of the arc from which she threw me. The
tool he's given me to work with this is: This is a safe horse.
Juniper is good. She will not rear, nor will she buck. She is good and
WILL do what I ask. I repeat this mantra and really prepare for the
upward transition, instead of just letting it happen. We'll see if I
make improvement. I go back again tomorrow (btw, everybody there has
fallen in love with Juniper, she's a great ambassador to fjords.
Everybody can see how tolerant she is of a beginning dressage rider
and how once I get something, she instantly gives exactly what is
asked. And after tomorrow, there's another clinic in February.
Hopefully by then the forward tilt will have gone away!

Andrea,

First I have a maiden mare due in March. She is naturally chubby..as
 are
most Fjords. I am giving her Mare Plus 2x a day and lots of
 hay(grass). Do I
give her grain, or will that put on too much weight?

An overweight mare can be more of a problem than an underweight one.
Lack of milk production and dystocia (difficult foaling) are just a
couple of them. If your mare is holding her own, then there is no reason
to add calories to the ration. Just be sure she is getting the proper
amount of vitamins and minerals.

Worming and vaccinating are important too. Most of the wormers these
days are safe enough that you can deworm right up to the foaling day
without harming the foal. This will prevent passing worms on to the
foal.

Vaccinating the mare 6-8wks before foaling helps the foal too. This will
increase the mare's immunity which she will pass on to the foal in her
milk.
