Re: Midwest Fjord Horse Club Winter Meeting in Galena, IL,
This message is from: Foxfire Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jer and I would like to echo Tyler and Dawn's appreciation to the wonderful folks who organized MWFHC meeting. We met so many wonderful people and learned so much, it would be impossible to note it all here. A huge thank you to Sophie and Howard Feidler for their generosity in sharing their farm and Fjords with us..., to Pat Holland for all your organizational managing, ... to the Jensons for their wonderful teaching and sharing, to Pat Wolfe for all the helpful draft information and demos, and especially to the clinic participants who so courageously allowed the rest of us to observe your learning! You were great! This was our first fjord event, too, and it surely will not be our last! There are another 100 or so participants to thank as well, since I think we learned something from everyone we met! We have close to 100 digital pics to review and edit...and will let you know when we have some up on the web. (To Mike M. From Seattle...congratulations if you made it all the way home without buying another fjord! and if your will power didn't hold out, well, congratulations, on your latest fjord :o) ... ) Jer Betsy Patryjak Foxfire Farm Michigan This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] We would like to say a big THANK YOU and GOOD JOB to everyone who put the Winter Meeting together. This was our first year of being able to attend the whole meeting and to be a participant in the clinic. We found it to be a very well run event and your officers conducted themselves in a very professional manner. We should all be very proud of the attendance this meeting had (over 100 people) even with the terrible weather we had. We had a great time and learned alot. Some of you came up and introduced yourselves and made us feel welcome. This really meant alot to us! We look forward to a long relationship with the Midwest Fjord Horse Club and it's members! Thanks for the words of encouragement after the driving clinic. Regards, Tyler and Dawn Lazy Valley Ranch Fjords

Galena Meeting
This message is from: Nancy Hotovy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Congratulations Lynda on your new foal. We are now waiting for #2 also. My poor mare is HUGE and very uncomfortable so hopefully yet this week! Was so nice to meet other Fjord enthusiasts from Michigan, Betsy Sue. Had a great time in Galena but it went very fast. Hope everyone made it home safely. Need to thank Howard Sophie Fiedler and Pat Holland for making this winter meeting work. Brian and Ursela Jensen put on a wonderful clinic and Sunday morning Pat Wolfe gave us all more insight on driving horses and skidding logs. Of all the enjoyment our Fjords have given us over the years I think the friendships are the best. Nancy

Re: Continue Care
This message is from: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well, do the math! Say it costs $.50/day to do the daily wormer, that's about $180. Plus Twice a year with Ivermectin = $20. Added up the total is $200 per horse. Now Ivermectin every 6-8 weeks, say, 7 times a year at $10/tube = $70, plus triple dose Strongid (Pyrantel Pamoate) paste at, say $8/tube = $24. Add $24 + $70 = $94 for the Ivermectin and Strongid paste regimen versus $200 for the Daily wormer plus Ivermectin twice a year! BTW, the Strongid C2X, Continuex and Equi Aid CW are all Pyrantel Tartrate 2.11%. I see in the catalog that NU-IMAGE GUARDIAN also is a daily wormer, also 2.11% Pyrantel tartrate and about the same price range. You can get generic Ivermectrin paste for $7.99 a tube in K-V Vet Supply (free shipping in lower 48) Zimecterin, Eqvalan paste and Equimectrin are all the same stuff, around $9 to $10 per tube, Pyrantel Pamoate paste, Rotectin 2, Strongid-P are all the same. Check your catalogs for the cheapest price. I would stay away from Quest..The dosage is too critical and you can overdose with serious problems. DISCLAIMER! I am NOT a vet..just do a lot of reading! Ask your vet! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where horse vets are scarce and feed store charge a bunch for wormers. While we are into worming---Does the Strongid-C (the daily dose) and/or the other Farnam product also get the tapes? I am beginning to believe that the daily dose might be cheaper in the long run if it is just as effective. This double dosing or even quadrupling once a year with Strongid (and my vet today supported your theory of giving more than a double dose) and then worming with ivermectin every 6 to 8 weeks is real costly. Thanks Mary Harvey Jean Ernest Fairbanks, Alaska mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Continue Care
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] you can buy the Farnham product anywhere vs Pfizer has to be bought at the vet. Valerie You don't have to buy Pfizer's Strongid-C from a veterinarian. They sale it in the feed stores around here. Initially they sold it only thru vets because they wanted us to promote it for them. Just lilke the ivermectin people did. Then once we got everyone using it, then they go OTC with it. We vets are always getting used like that. Steve White Waterloo, Nebraska
Re: Fly control
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is a question for Steve White, but I have read that there is some evidence that using the Strongid C or other daily wormers will control tapes also..even at the usual dose? The one shot wormer for tapes, tho , is the paste Strongid at double the dose I haven't seen anything published about this so I couldn't say for certain. It may prevent them from reinfesting, but it won't kill the adults. You must give them the double dose of the paste. When I deworm for tapes, I use the double dose two days in a row (dble. dose one day, then the following day another dble dose). This has been shown to be more effective at killing tapes. It costs a little more, but if you are going to do it, you might as well do it good. Steve Steve White Waterloo, Nebraska

Nebraska Horse Expo
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Neb. Horse Expo starts this Friday. I was disappointed to see that only one breeder sent us any literature to pass out. As I said earlier, we had a great response last year that resulted in some new members and fjord owners. People came from all over the midwest (SD, MN, IA, MO, KS, CO). We even had one person sign our guest book from France (I don't think she came to the US just for our expo though, but I could be wrong) This year should be even bigger. I was also dissappointed to find out that the NFHR is not supporting expos this year. I think this was a bad decision. They decided to put all the money into some national publications. I think that is fine to get that exposure, but I don't think anything compares to seeing a fjord in person. Steve White Waterloo, Nebraska

This message is from: Marsha Jo Hannah [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't know if Tapeworms are a problem in every part of the country Apparently, they're not. When I was in the San Francisco Bay Area, my vet told me that the vet school at UC Davis very rarely sees any signs of tapeworms in any of the horses that they treat. For the problems we saw in that area, she recommended ivermectin, once a month. (It is effective against lots more than the usual stomach parasites.) When we moved to Oregon, I again inquired, and was told that continuing my monthly ivermectin would be a good program---lots of bugs here, but no tapeworms. (At least not the equine variety; dogs and cats do have problems with their own species-specific tapeworms.) The one shot wormer for tapes, tho , is the paste Strongid at double the dose. I think once a year.. I don't know if Tapeworms are a problem in every part of the country, but a double dose of Strongid Paste is safe and might be a good thing to do if you think you have tapeworms in your area. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, -3 F this morning, but +20 today and sunny...perfect for ice carving and dog sled races. While I am here and there has been some discussion on wormers, I have a question. I have been told in order to get tape worms I must double dose (at the same time) with Strongid-C. Jean Ernest Fairbanks, Alaska mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Continue Care
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You are right Jean, the programs are very similar. I applaud a company who believes in their product. My yearly info from Pfizer says they have paid out 300 times. The only difference I see is that, like you said, you can buy the Farnham product anywhere vs Pfizer has to be bought at the vet. But if you buy your own you have to keep the receipts vs my vet has it all in his computer. Cheaper to find your own I am sure. Valerie

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi List Sorry for the previous message. Was meant to be an answer to a private e-mail. I was half asleep and punched up and replyed to the wrong e-mail. At least you heard yet another testimony to fjords. While I am here and there has been some discussion on wormers, I have a question. I have been told in order to get tape worms I must double dose (at the same time) with Strongid-C. I was told, especially in young stock, that not doing this could lead to problems with colic, particularly in the secum? area. We live in middle Virginia. Is this a practice that is used across the US? Any information would be appreciated. Mary Harvey in the mountains of Virginia Where we are still over 20 inches behind in rain for the last 12 months

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Jane Ryland's address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] They usually only check their mail on the week-ends, so don't despair is you don't get an answer. Thanks for the tip on Lukas. He, I think, will be a very good driving Fjord or possibly a child's mount. Has more of a pony attitude. I say he is Dennis the Mennis. But I have yet to see him afraid and he may be mischievous, but never mean. The farrior was here a short time ago and Lukas was tied to his feed bunk waiting for his feet to be trimmed and it was a horribly windy day. We were working on another horse and a green foil wrapper that had been on my poinsetta tumbleweeded into the barn and under his belly. He never reacted a bit. I really like Lukas, just don't have a job for him. I really love Sonja. She is a dear. Hope all goes well with your foaling and the milk is coming easy. Mary
