She does have a few black hairs down deep in her ever-so-curly mane. She also
has some dark hairs at the end of her tail, as well as faint dark points on the
tips of her ears. Her mother, Sara (who we absolutely adore) has a very wide
black stripe down her mane and a dark tail, dark markings on her legs, but not
much of a dun stripe down her back. Beila's older sister RQR Millenium (Sara x
Hostar and also a white dun) has no dun stripe and a very light mane and tail
with light legs. It will be interesting to see how this filly sheds out.

I really liked the photos of Line and Stella and their offspring. I love the
idea of a "White Duns in North America album!" What a cool thing to do! We
have three here, right now, and would be happy to contribute photos.

Congratulations to everyone else and their new foals. Seems like this week was
a good one for births!

Another fjord day in San Jose

2002-05-18 Thread Dagrun Aarsten
This message is from: "Dagrun Aarsten" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello listers,

thought I'd beat Brigid to it this time, writing about our fjord day.

I have found a saddle that fits Quinn! A synthetic dressage saddle. Maybe
not perfect perfect but definitely acceptable. He is very comfortable in it
so far. The good thing about the synthetics is that they are somewhat
flexible and mould to the horse's back more.

So yesterday I ventured out on a trail - and Quinn did great - lots and lots
of distractions, like roadwork, traffic, heavy machines, plastic bands
flapping in the wind, balloons, water. He did great! Tensed up a little
sometimes but he always listened and went wherever I wanted him to. After
coming back the sweat marks after the saddle were a pleasant surprise,
indicating nice and even pressure all over the back.

Today Brigid was coming down with fjord Tommes again for another of our
weekend rides...but this time I went with Quinn instead of Tinn. He did
really great, and we had lots of fun - going on a nice narrow trail up and
down and under trees and through bushes, sometimes at trot or canter. The
horses just loved it. Brigid kept laughing behind me when we were cantering,
so I thought I looked really strange or had a hole in my pants or something.
But no, she just enjoys it so much she can't help laughing!!!

I am known for taking any possible detour on the trail to have the chance to
jump something, a log or a ditch or something. And today was no exception. I
am addicted to jumping, and Quinn seems to like it, too, even though we
haven't started any serious training. Brigid tried to make me believe she
has never jumped, but I don't buy that one. She just thought "if they can do
it, so can we", and Tommes came right behind us bouncing over whatever we
were jumping. It was so much fun, especially adding the sound effects of the
screams of excitement from Brigid!

After the ride we hosed them down and turned them out in the arena before
Brigid went home. Quinn wanted to play with Tommes, bucking and running
around, but Tommes was clearly not interested in that kind of foolishness.
When Quinn came towards him at full gallop, Tommes just looked hard at him
and didn't move a foot. Like saying "stop that nonsense, I am trying to eat
here". So in the end Quinn had to give up. Tommes did a great job of totally
ignoring him. Maybe there's something to learn from that.

Wish there were more weekends and less workdays! Then I could do this more!

Dagrun in San Jose, sunburned but happy :-)

PS: I just heard someone down in Morgan Hill (just 15 min south from where I
live) has a fjord mare and a two year old colt. I have directions, will go
and check it out! Anybody on the list heard of these people? Some woman
bought the pregnant mare two years ago. Don't know the horses' names OR the
owner's name yet. Will find out.

Hei hei all, I've just returned from 3 wonderful weeks in Norway! After
spending eons reading Digests, I am caught up. Many, many congratulations to
all of you with new babies and my sad condolences to those of you who have
lost babies or older horse friends.

Beth and Sandy, your new Uls Dun baby is adorable - only what we would
expect from two such remarkable parents. And again, I am so impressed with
your web site - nice work!

Julie and Darryl were kind enough to let me share their little old house by
the Fjord - it was very nice of them. I did miss the big crew from last
year, but enjoyed spending time with Catherine and Rune Lassesen, and Mike,
Renee, and Margaret May, Mike's mom. I tried to adopt her, but Mike and
Renee wouldn't go for it. She's adorable! Rune was kind enough to translate
a script I had written for the new mare owner video we had made, so that the
Norwegians could understand what I was saying on it. This video, set to
music by Greig, is now available for free loan to anyone interested in
possible breedings to Erlend. You are also welcome to make your own copy
from it if you wish.

By now you all have read that Flotren's offspring did him proud at the
Evaluations in Norway. Since our Ari now lives with Sue Ennis in Michigan,
she will have to let him know about his siblings' accomplishments. Knowing
Sue, she probably has him in a velvet-lined stall with silver water and
feed buckets He and Junior, her older gelding, must be VERY happy guys!

It was sure sweet to get back to the four-foots here at home. After Ari
left, I had to shift horses around and now am trying Clark the goat in with
Vilde. I'll give them a few days, it's a little stormy right now. But since
Clark is convinced that he is really a Fjord, I keep trying to find the
right combination. Don't worry, he's neutered
Interestingly, when some friends stopped by yesterday with their QH mare,
His Majesty wasn't interested in her at all. We weren't teasing or anything,
but she was in the nearby round pen, and he was definitely "ho hum - not my
type."

I am happy to announce that Sadie is once again in foal to Flotren! Please,
everyone, think FILLY. And, even though we have no Fjord babies around this
season, we did just welcome a Golden Retriever puppy to our family. That is,
Doug and I did. The older Golden in residence and the 4 cats, appear to have
a different attitude about the whole affair

I am also in the beginning stages of trying to bring Johannes Vie to the US
next year to share his enormous wealth of knowledge about Fjords. Phil Odden
and his wife, Else, are willing to translate. If your local group has any
interest in hosting him [ show, clinic, evaluation...?], please let me know.
My hope is have him come to Libby, of course.

Bye for now - Peg

Announcing the birth of a beautiful brown dun colt on May 17 @ 1:00 am.

Mother -- Skyview Erika ("Lena") (out of Grabbson) is a kind, gentle and
patient mom. She tolerates others in the stall or turnout. Visitors to our
farm have been steady since baby's arrival!!

Baby -- "Hans" - aka as: "Hasse" (Swedish nickname for "Hans") is so gosh
darn precious my daughter and I can hardly keep our eyes off him :):):)

Birth was 4th for mom - first foaling for me and my daughter to experience.
It was a textbook perfect birth and "Hasse" is perfect, too:)

"Hasse" has personality plus - we have taken scads of pictures and soon will
have some on our All Things Fjord website.

If you are in the Minneapolis area and would like to come see mom and son -
we would love to show him off!!!

More later - time to go have an imprinting session.

What a pretty foal..does she have the dark hair in her mane? Since I have
one that doesn't (Yellow dun?), was curious. I love the white/Uls duns.
It seems they are becoming more sought after, and I am so glad that this
color is being preserved! They once were very prominant in early history
of the breed. If anybody is interested, I have put an album on
Picturetrail of the white dun line from Line, Mary Thurman's mare and my
Stella. http://www.PictureTrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=743898&uid=460539
or go to http://www.PictureTrail.com/ and put in "Akfjords" for the album
in the column on the left. You will see two albums, on of The Fuzzy new
foal and the other of the White dun line. Maybe I should put a separate
album of all the white duns, etc. that are/were here in North America, if
folks would send me pictures.

Re: OTHER leg problems in foals

2002-05-18 Thread whitedvm
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Aimee,

I did surgery today on two different foals with the same problem. If the
angle is not too bad it may correct on its own, maybe with corrective
trimming. If it has a significant amount of angle then surgery may be
needed. It is a simple procedure to stimulate the growth on the outside.
Severe angles require a more involved surgery requiring wires or staples
implanted on the inside to slow the growth there.

Some time there is no bone problem, just joint laxity which they will out
grow.

Either way, I would limit the activity of the foal. Having it run around
on the crooked legs could damage the joints. Confine it to a stall or
small pen until you and your vet decide what to do with it. No hurry to
do anything. I usually give them a month before making any plans.
