This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Greetings from Cornerstone Fjords and the Rollins family.. We are so tickled to hear about your special arrival in the winter. What a neat blessing, healthy, happy, and content with Mom (both fjord and human). In the middle of winter this was so nice to hear, a new life and the smell of the little one in a fresh stall, awaiting your arrival home each day..:) Jim, Kathy, & Ethan

This message is from: "Ursula & Brian Jensen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear list from Brian Jensen; From a personal perspective I do not believe the list can possibly manage to be all things to all people. It is very possible for those interested to follow their own interest and develop their own list for discussion. I am a Registered Fjord owner interested in the Stewardship of the purebred breed as defined by the mother country Norway. That being said my North American interest is for the NFHR and CFHA to carry these principles and standards to the owners and breeders of Registered Fjords in in North America. I remain thankful to Steve and his broad spectrum forum over the kitchen table for discussions. It does afford list members the opportunity to soap-box their thoughts and ideas. Especially for us more remote individuals the chance to be connected to other Registered Fjord owners and Breeders, that is a treat. Topics of interest to me on the list are about what Registered Fjords are doing in North America and how they came to do it. I remain hopeful the list maintains its standards with no exceptions to other interest groups or special interest lobbyists. thankyou---Brian Jensen Trinity Fjords Box 1032 Lumby BC, V0E 2G0 Canada 250-547-6303 [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://okjunc.junction.net/~ujensen/

Re: Januar surprise!
This message is from: "Karen McCarthy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Janice, Yes, it is VERY good indeed to have a new foal in the barn...I can barely drag myself off to work in the morning, and then can't wait to get home in the evening. I love the way they stand there, so alert, so charged with energy, and then the SMELL! I love the way they smell, especially their breath. Heck,I love the way Fjords of any age smell, especially at this colder time of the year, a bit "muskier" than usual (Jeez, I think if you look into the archives, there was alittle discussion of this a way back). The only downfall of scritching & scratching those baby Fjords is that in no time at all your fingertips turn black from their greasy little coats. I am no expert, and this may sound a bit wierd, (but hey, as an admitted horse sniffer, maybe wierd by degrees?!) but do any of you expert vet-types out there agree that Fjord foals have an unusually high degree of ..lanolin(?) or other "greasy" stuff that naturally occurs in their haircoat? My theory, to maybe help 'waterproof' them, as historically they have foaled out for centuries in an enviroment that is not, er, exactly the French Riviera, eh? Oh wellI kinda went off the deep end there, didn't I??! Janice, as soon as I have more time during the weekend, and maybe with some lousy weather thrown in to boot, I promise you,(and all the others who have inquired), that I will post Mr Januar's pics..and by the way, if I told my Mom how much ya'll liked her name choice, I betcha she'd designate herself the Official Great Basin Fjords Name Tsarina, and then..well, you get the picture ;~)) KMac Karen McCarthyGreat Basin Fjords :: Carson City, Nevadahttp://www.picturetrail.com/weegees Original Message Follows From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2003 15:49:23 EST "..oh, lucky you! starting a load
This message is from: wanda m hill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This is from Joel Harman. There are several reasons one wants to teach a horse in harness to ease into a load. Visualize slamming your shoulder into a door frame several times a day for years. Over time your shoulders are going to get sore. The collar has some padding but the end result will be the same. The reason horses want to hit the collar hard is to overcome friction to get the load moving. What you have to do is keep the horse on the bit when you ask it to get the load moving. It will learn that getting collected on the hinds will allow it to start that load without jerking it. As the load gets heavier, say a 1200# bale, that 900# horse will not be able to jerk that load to get it moving. They may even hop on both hinds simultaneously to move the load. Another reason to ease into it is to keep from breaking hame straps. When not paying enough attention I have hung up a log on a stump & had the horse walk right out of the harness because the hame strap broke. I don't remember if you have the bale on a sled. You could have the horse start at an angle to break the bale loose. In other words allow her to swing a little left or right when starting. This is often done when ground skidding. The horse is still pulling the load, just not straight ahead. The log weighs more than the horses. You can tell the horse is in the collar when they keep their head tucked. It is good to keep them on the bit with taut lines. They learn when that pressure means "whoa" & when you mean move forward. So when you start her, little pressure on the lines, her ears will point back to you. She has you dialed in now. Ask her to go forward, keep pressure on the lines. She gets into the collar, traces are tight. Encourage her forward more, watch her hind end tighten up. The bale starts to move, away you go! As the load moves the horse may want to go faster, like a horse trotting uphill because it is easier. Can the human walk faster than the horse? I doubt it. Walk as fast as you are comfortable going. The horse will learn that going too fast means stopping & starting the load all over again. Keep the lines tight. This will help to keep the horse from going faster that you can walk. I know your horse can handle the bale. We have to know the limits of the horse. Brag alert - a few years ago my 960# horse pulled 2900# on a sled at a pulling contest in Ferry County ,WA. He probably could have pulled more but I stopped there. He was in shape & had been in harness regularly. I did not want to hook onto weight he could not pull. Tips. Hook as short as you can. This will provide some lift on the load when going forward. You may be so short that the singletree would bang the horse's heels if not hooked to the load. When you start forward that tree will go up & not even be near the heels Just remember to lengthen at least one side when not hooked to the load anymore. A team has to start together. That may necessitate some fancy line work if one is hot & the other is a doodioo. Just takes time. Kind of like lots of wet saddle blankets is what it takes to make a good saddle horse. Some horses are natural pullers. Some are slugs. It is very satisfying to see a horse or team work hard for you. Just like my favorite sound is the sound of a sicklebar going back & forth. Life on the Ground
This message is from: wanda m hill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This is from Jord. Thanks for your nice comments. It really is hard to hit the keys as I have grown. I liked writing when I first hit the ground. The human told me there was something called archives but I don't know how to look at them. There is lots of info on what the human made me do when I was little. It's funny to watch Baar, my little brother, when the human works with him. He sure makes things hard on himself. Mom told me Baar was tied to the back of the wagon in the parade at the threshing bee last year. He set back on his hinds like he was going to keep that wagon from moving. Then he had to jump forward so he wouldn't get dragged. What a dummy. Never, never pull against what you are tied to, lose every time. Anyway, I really don't have much to say. I am a little depressed that no one wants to take me or my dad to a new home. Bye Jord U U U U Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! Visit www.juno.com
