Hi all,

I just wanted to quickly let everyone know that Dressage Today magazine has
an article about Prisco and Fjordhorses in the May 2003 issue. It is in the
Local Entries section, starting on page 18. This month's Local Entries
column is devoted to Dressage Ponies, and the subsection "Fjords Do
Dressage" is about me & Prisco.

Steve White, I'm glad and thankful to see your response. I really think the
vet was trying to set me up for the worst case scenario. I spoke with Lauren
Sellars and she gave me a lot of hope.

The vet did mention steroids but I don't know if he gave him any. He said
something to the effect that steroids could be detrimental to the immune
system. He said Hardys heartrate was 70 where it should be 30. His reasoning
for that is that the valves aren't closing properly, therefore the heart beats
faster to try and pump more blood through. He also stated the lungs are "more
than congested", whatever that means.

As of right now he's eating and drinking and doesn't appear to be getting
worse. Three of his legs are swollen to about twice the normal size. One front
leg looks almost normal. But they are very weak and he stumbles and falls very
easily. Just before the vet showed up he was laying flat out, but he got up in
about ten minutes.

I want to thank everyone for all the supportive emails. It gives me hope.

Joe,

I agree with your vets diagnosis, but don't agree with his prognosis.
I've never lost a horse to P.H.. However, I am not there as your vet is
and it could be more severe than what it sounds like from your message.

Did he prescribe steroids too? Dexamethasone or Prednisone is very
beneficial in these cases. Perhaps that is what is in the syringes he is
having you give twice/day.

So sorry to hear the rather negative report on your boy. Good things do
happen and I am sure you will find people here who have had similar
problems. My thoughts are with you during this very stressful time. Jean

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings everyone from Othello, WA
Last week we moved our filly across the street so we could wean her. She
didn't seem to mind as much as her mom. Now we have moved her back to our
place and have the mare and filly in different pastures but they can see each
other and touch noses, etc. They both go about eating and such with little
attention to each other, but we wonder how long we should wait till we can
put them back together again.
Thanks for the help.
Taffy in Kennewick, we tried to come see you a week ago, but did not find
you. We ran out of road going east on Game farm road--so will try again by
taking another road to get farther east. We tried calling, but you must have
been out riding!!
All now, Dave and Ann

Congratulations!!! Good things come to those who wait. Now a good weeks
sleep is what is needed, but the excitement of a new babe will probably keep
you all on an adrenaline rush.

Good Luck with the sleep,

My name is Linda Walker and I am a professional equine photographer and
videographer. At the 2003 Midwest Horsefair I filmed both Fjord presentations
and also took portrait shots for a few members of the group. A professional
video is being produced as of this posting.

This video is near completion and it will be for sale within the next two
weeks. If anyone is interested, the cost will be $20 (VHS) plus $7.00 for
shipping and handling. The Fjord group did a wonderful job during their
presentations and you won't want to miss this professional video of their time
in "the spotlight"!!

You may contact me by email if you wish to place an order, or you can call me

The vet showed up and checked him out. He diagnosed it as Purpura Hemorrhagic,
which is an allergic reaction to the strangles. He gave him Penicillin, Lasix
and Banimine. He also filled syringes which I need to give him twice a day.
Then he will stop out again on Saturday to examine him. He also told me not to
get my hopes up, that the odds are NOT it my favor. So we will just take it
one day at a time.

Joe
It sounds like perpura, A complication from strangles. It needs immediate
action. Your vet should give you penicilin*. I had several cases of it here
a few years back . Perpera is very dangerous. Some vets don't even know
what it is. or at least in my area. Please feel free to call me . To much
to write about.

Another delay on the tee shirts.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for the update. Hang in there for all of us and maybe it will
come down to the wheel that squeaks the loudest gets oiled. I bet you
do not want to hear the word T-shirt when this is all done. :-)

Swollen Legs

This message is from: "Joe Glick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have an unusual problem and wondered if anyone has had this happen. Three
weeks ago my stallion "Hardy" got the strangles. It seemed to run its course
as usual. The swelling drained, he ran a fever for a few days and wasn't
eating much for about two weeks. The last few days he was eating pretty good
again. He almost seemed himself again. Then yesterday I noticed his legs were
swollen and seemed weak. He would walk on his toes in the back legs and his
front legs seemed unstable. This morning his legs seem weaker yet. Sometimes
when he steps forward he doesn't get his front feet placed correctly and falls
on his face. But he won't stay down, insists on getting up right away again. I
called the vet, but he won't be here till this afternoon. He didn't seem to
know what it was when I talked to him on the phone.
