New Fjord owner :)
This message is from: Paula Chmura [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi I'm new to the list and a new Fjord owner. My name is Paula and my Fjord is Frodo or Julevan and we live in Los Angeles, California. I am curious to know about Frodo's early history - he is by Gjestarson by Svarina and was bred by Gene Bauer. Here are some pictures of Frodo if anybody recognizes him and can tell me anything about his early history http://www.pbase.com/paula_chmura/fjord_pony 00Frodo and I found each other just before Christmas and it was love at first sight - he is truly a joy and I am so taken with this pony. I am doing some trail riding and dressage with him and he is so willing to please and learns so fast! Everybody at my barn is just so taken with him - one of the other ladies with my trainer even just went out and bought another Fjord so we'll have another dressage Fjord here soon. I call Frodo my little Norwegian Warmblood ;) At this point I have a couple of questions for the list if that's okay. First how do I do a Fjord mane properly? Frodo came with a mane completely flopped over. I've trimmed it some with scissors but it just looks choppy and still flops over. Will it always flop, or do I need to just get it really short? Second, am I supposed to trim his feathers on his legs? Is this considered a breed trait that should be left or should it properly be trimmed off? Or does it matter? Thanks! Paula Chmura and Frodo
RE: Corn Oil Residue
This message is from: jerrell friz [EMAIL PROTECTED] What is the purpose of feeding corn oil? or for that matter any oil?? Horses don't have a gall bladder!! I hear they have a tough time with it.I am not trying too be funny, but really wonder why?? Seems to me that if the corn oil were to be discontinued, then the black globs would go away.. I am so desperate I resorted to using sheath cleaner on the globs to no avail. There has to be a better way of removing them other than pulling the hair off his face! Does anyone know a good way to remove this mess? Patrick and I would both thank you for any help with this problem (specially Patrick who's tired of having his hair pulled out!) Hi, I know it is not funny to you, but I do get a chuckle out of this. How about soap and warm water? Of course trying not to let horse drink the soapy water. Shaving? How about that new stuff. Goo Gone That may be toxic. don't know. How about rubbing alcohol? Well. Let it just wear off by it's self. Unless you must do a show. -- Built Fjord Tough Carol M. On Golden Pond N. Wisconsin

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Amy, you guys are a credit to the breed. There's no end to your creativity and sense of adventure :-) I'm sorry I missed it. Can you email me about the current regulations for crossing the OR border with a horse? I'm about to call my vet and get that all set up for the show, which I'm so looking forward to! / )_~ /L/L Brigid Wasson SF Bay Area, CA www.Brigid.Clickryder.com

Re: ?fallis balanced ride saddle
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've ridden a Monte Foreman Balanced Ride Saddle off and on over the last year. Monte Foreman designed the saddle originally back in the fifties and Fallis produced it. The saddle I have was made recently by Gary Foreman, Monte's son. (Actually the saddle was made by Bob's Custom Saddles in Scottsdale, Arizona and marketed by Gary Foreman.) It's identical in design to the Fallis saddle. It fits my Fjords but started causing white hairs on my fox trotter's withers. It also caused me some hip pain but I'm sure that wouldn't be true for everyone. I still use it on my Fjords occassionally when I'm riding in a group and one or more of my other saddles is being used by some one else. Neither Gary Foreman or Fallis offer different tree sizes. However, it does fit my Fjords. A criticism I've heard a lot about the Foreman/Fallis saddles is how the bulkless rigging is accomplished. That narrow ride comes with a price according to the critics. The in-skirt rigging pulls the saddle down into the withers so if the saddle isn't a perfect fit it will damage the withers more than most bad fits, or so the critics say. The saddle fitting video from About the Horse explains this theory in detail. Before I wrote this email I searched for Gary Foreman's website where he was selling his version of the Foreman/Fallis saddle just a year ago. It's no longer available. I'm not sure why. Probably the world didn't need two people producing the same saddle. Or maybe there was a rights issue between Foreman and Fallis. The bottom line: I still feel my Balanced Ride Saddle is a good fit for my Fjords and comfortable enough for me for rides less than three hours. For longer rides, I prefer a wider twist. There's a designer of endurance saddles named Boz who modeled his saddles after Monte Foreman's design. I've heard his saddles are very good for wide backed horses. R.J. Stewart

This message is from: Tamara Rousso [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Skeels, Mark A (MED) Do these saddles come in different width tree's ? I'm glad you mentioned that - because I'm not even sure what you are talking about! I have soo much to learn and so little time g. I guess I better do some more studying before I go and buy a saddle. Yuli and Windson
This message is from: Knutsen Fjord Farm [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exciting [and sad] times around here! Yesterday, our sweet, affectionate almost-yearling Yuli went to live with her new mom, Kathleen Spiegel. Yuli [Knutsen Fjord's Julia] made the long day trip like a trooper - Ho hum, I do this every day... Such a good girl! We miss her already - she has the To-Die-For black-rimmed eyes with the lg eyelashes that run in her mare line. [daddy Erlend wants me to add that his eyes ain't chopped liver either...] Poor guy, he gets SO touchy this time of year. Men! We are delighted that Yuli will have such a good new home in Idaho. And tomorrow AM Mr. LFF Windson arrives! He will be our token gorgeous gelding. Now I have no excuse not to get back up and ride. Darryl told me Windson put his head out the trailer window onto Darryl's shoulder, and he almost turned around and unloaded him right then and there. Fjords must be the smartest animals in the universe - they sure know how to win us over so that we become putty in their hooves - or something like that. Boy are we all lucky to live with such horses! Not sure MVF Grandpa will be so glad to see Mr. W. He's used to being the only guy on the place. He'll probably have to snort and prance around some more. Men! Of course he's so chubby right now that a little more prancing will only do him good. Sounds like you all are having wonderful adventures. I love reading about all the new babies. Keep 'em coming! Sorry I can't add anything to the saddle discussion. I suspect all of mine have shrunk - we'll see. Bye now, Peg, In cloud-bursting Ellensburg Peg Knutsen www.elltel.net/kffjord/
