OK, my 12 year old gelding had shoes on all four feet when we bought him.
We tried him without shoes when we lived further south in California, and he
got
real sore. We then put shoes on the front only.
We then moved further north of L.A.up in the mountains, but there are tons of
rocks here. We tried barefoot again, - for a long time - again, he was
limping and hurting.
Back to front shoes, and when we rode him in the mountains he did not do
good, so the farrier suggested we do all four feet. And that is where we are
at.
I don't know what to think, as there are so many rocks where we live. I have
never seen so many rocks and the dirt roads we live on has tons of rocks on
them. Hard on our cars too.
But in this case it seems like we have to have shoes on him.
Any suggestions otherwise?
Rondi.

Anybody ever see their horse get fluid type sacks behind the front elbows of
their horse, both sides, about 4 inches tall extending from the arm pit rear
ward about a foot. Both sides. It is soft and fluid filled, puffy sort of
but not at all hard. I would think a gland would be hard. This horse is
acting normal otherwise. None of the other horses have it. Noticed it
about 4 days ago. It is a 8 year old mare.

Also mosquitoes just came out the last few days in full force. Up until now
we had a very cool spring.

Most people take good care of their horses and spare no expense. It's a
psychological phenomena that we feel the more expensive commodity is the more

Reminds me of an American TV interviewer, interviewing a Olympic swimmer
from Russia, the year the Dream Team was in the Olympics. The interviewer
asked the favored Russian Swimmer who their favorite athelete was. Thinking
they would get a reply like Michael Jordan or Larry Bird or something. The
swimmer said Me. In other words,, the Russian swimmer could care less about
American Sports and American Hero's.

Maybe someone in Russia would think Siberia is the End of the earth. A
missionary once found in China, scribed on a rock, the quotation "The End of
the Earth", which is prophetic to some extent.

Of course Americans think they are the only important ones on earth, thus,,,
maybe I, live at the end of the earth. Every place else on earth leads
toward my house. No matter where I want to go I must leave from my house,
and whoever wants to visit me, always has to come my way, no matter where
they live on earth. Or maybe I'm at the beginning of the earth. I'll have
to ask a kid about that one.

Breyer has a Brown Dun,, a couple years ago they also had a Grey Dun. I
bought my wife both as christmas/birthday type occasions. I think between
$18-$25 depending on what vendor you buy from. The big regional horse shows
usually have 2-3 Breyer Venders selling horses, Usually you can find at
least a couple of them have the Fjord. Also there is a small Fjord about 4
inches tall sold in several of the farm and ranch supply stores in the

I appreciate all the input about gooseneck trailer management. I will
check my gooseneck hitch and see if it will adjust further. It is
really pretty level, but it is just slightly higher than it should be to
be level. It may be that I cannot bring it down any further without
having the trailer rub on the pickup box..there is not much
clearance there.

** This weekend I met an interesting man, my client's farrier. He is from
Pakistan and is very much into Arabs and endurance. He promotes barefoot and,
when people insist on shoes, he uses the natural balance. He said his horses
back
home were always barefoot and did very long rides through the desert just
fine; however, his American Arabs get sore on the rockier 50-100 milers. His
solution is to shoe just for the day of the competition, then remove the shoes
right away (he made a gesture to show how fast the shoe would be pulled off)! I
guess this is a good idea when boots are not practical or not allowed.
Fortunately the technology is improving on the boots, so it's almost possible
for them
to stay on all day.

To shoe or not to shoe

This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Just had the farrier out. He is a little unsual but very competent. When I
tried to find one I thought would be good but more reasonably priced, I paid
dearly and so did the horses.

However, one thing this guy does is not trim unless they need it. He looked at
Tank and Nigel and said their feet were perfect. They were a little rough
around the edges and he said he would happy to charge me $40 to do a cosmetic
job (which I declined). We have been lucky to never have had to shoe. It
depends on where and when. I do believe Steve's Morgan,Pferd, needed front or
rear shoes temporarily when he developed a split.

My farrier says that Tank has feet that could do the mountain pass without
shoes. My Morgan never needed shoes. But there are places and/or horses that
would require shoeing. I agree with Brigid that one should not assume all
horses need shoes but I do believe that sometimes they will and sometimes they
won't. It is a decision dictated by an individual's current health and physical
circumstances.

Dear Fjord List-

I thought I should check in and tell you a story to boot. We are pleased to
announce that Sukkertoy got pregnant on the first try this spring. Pjoska is
due to foal anytime. We are very excited, since this will be the first
Saethersblakken baby born in America. Marcie Baer and Susan Cook's mare Zoe
will
be next in line, with a baby due in July. We would like to thank Dr. Steve
White for his great expertise on that one. We shipped semen to them and Zoe
caught on the 2nd try.

We think we have the collection and shipping process down pat. We collect
Saethersblakken off the mounting dummy for every breeding here and AI all the
mares. This works well for us, Dr. White and I can do a collection and AI
without any other help, there is no safety issue for either mare or stallion
and it
makes collecting for shipped semen a breeze. Svetlana (the mounting dummy)
is his only real girlfriend and he loves her.

We offer a money back guarantee on conception with shipped semen so if anyone
has a mare they are considering breeding, but don't want her to leave home,
please contact us.

Now the story-

I own an antiques store and have many personal collections. 12 or 15 years
ago I started collecting childrens' books with farm and animal themes. I would
pick up one here or there, but never displayed them, just kept them on a
shelf. A couple of nights ago, I was going thru books to donate some to a
charity, and picked up the stack of children's books. On the top of the stack
was a
book I don't even remember buying namedOla and Blakken. It is the
story of a Norwegian boy and his Fjord horse Blakken. Now mind you I have only
owned Fjords for a little under 3 years and didn't know what a Fjord was until
5 years ago. And although I know Blakken (meaning dun) is a common name for a
Fjord in Norway..I still about fainted dead away. The fact that 10
years after I bought that little book, I imported my own Blakken
(Saethersblakken)
from Norway seemed slighty spooky!!!

Anyway, aren't life's twists and turns interesting. I just wondered if any
of you have ever seen this story book. It has beautiful pictures and darling
pictures of Blakken the Fjord.

Enough story time, I am sure you are all very busy, and I have a mare to
check.
