Re: Analalysis of significant bloodlines - GJEST/ Malcom Locke & other stallions
This message is from: "Carol Riviore" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia -->> K Spiegel SE Idaho Hi Kathy, I would love to see this information available as well. Any idea how it could be made to happen? I'm thinking of contacting Bob van Bon, Chief Inspector for the Netherlands Fjordhorse Studbook and asking him how many offspring Gjest had there, and how many of those were judged "A" Premie, "AA" Premie, Model, Star, Keur, Prestatie, Elite? -- I know Gjest had one son approved as a Studbook Stallion. -- -- Also, I'd like to know how many "B" Premies, and if there were any "C" premies. -- I think this information may be fairly readily available in Holland. -- To make the study even more illuminating, it would be interesting to know how many of the mares he was bred to were "A", "B", or "C" quality? -- How many were Model, Star, Keur, etc.? For those of you new to the Fjord breed, and not familiar with our stallion, Gjest - here's a very brief history --- Gjest was born in Norway and approved their as a Norwegian Studbook stallion. He was purchased as a 6 yr. old from Norway by the Netherlands Fjordhorse Studbook. He stood in Holland for four years before Beaver Dam Farm imported him to the States. -- The Dutch Studbook were willing to let him go as they had stood Gjest's sire, Helgas-Jarl, for many years, and had just approved one of Gjest's sons as a Studbook Stallion. This was the stud, Fjellwin. -- When BDF imported Gjest, he was breeding 85 mares a year live cover for the Studbook. So, we estimate that between the breeding Gjest did in Norway for 2 - 3 years, and the four years in Holland, plus the breeding he's done in Canada and the U.S., there may be more than 400 Gjest offspring in the world. -- We're expecting five at our farm next spring. There is one stallion in Holland that has been closely studied, and that's the Norwegian-born stallion, Astrix. -- I believe Astrix has more offspring than any other stallion in Fjord history in Holland, and the vast majority of them are good ones. -- As Van Bon once told me, the mark of a really good stallion is that if he can be bred to various qualities of mares and still produce good (not great necessarily) results. I think it would be a worthwhile project for the NFHR to try and put together data on Gjest, and any other stallion in NA that has had a similar influence. -- What do you all think? Kind Regards, Carol Rivoire .
