New to FjordHorse and a 2 y/o question

2006-08-23 Thread Kristie Strange
This message is from: "Kristie Strange" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all. I've been lurking here for about a month and thought it is time to
introduce myself. My name is Kristie Strange and I live in Danville, VA. I
have three horses, a QH type pony, 2 y/o Fjord filly, and Peruvian Paso
gelding. I ride mostly English, my husband ride the Paso.

I used to have a BIG 16.2 hand QH and I sold him because I wanted something a
little smaller, but cobby, which led me to the Fjord. Her name is Izzy and
she's a sweetie. I have no interest in driving, but I'm hoping she will be
my lifelong riding companion.Maybe some local shows, hunter paces,
hunting, low level eventing and such. About 2'6" - 2'9" is my personal
preference in jump height. ;)

Anyway, I'm not planning to ride my little Fjord until she is at least three,
but I'm wondering what other things I can do with her. She is gentle. She
ties, clips, good for farrier, etc. She knows how to yield from pressure and
back and such. She has worn a saddle and had a bit in her mouth. I have
been on her back several times bareback, but just sitting, not really asking
her to do anything. I have ground driven her a little with a halter. Tried
once with a bit and that didn't go over so well. (How do you teach them
initially do give to the bit and what type of bit do you typically start them
in? )

I would like to learn some things I can do with her on the ground to gain more
RESPECT from her that will carry over when I start riding her. I have many
years riding experience, but I have never started a horse. I want to try with
Izzy, but of course if it ends up being too much, I will certainly turn it
over to a professional. But I'd like to try. :)

She will be three next summer, in June, and I'd like to be riding her then.
I understand these horses mature slowly, so of course I would start nice and
slow, probably mostly trail riding the first several months or so.

But until then, I'd like to keep working with her so she'll be ready. So
please tell me what do you all do with your two year olds?

Thanks!

Kristie Strange (}--{)

Hi Pat,

The post office tells me that you should receive the CD Friday. I'm so sorry
for the delay, but we couldn't find our copy and had to buy another.

Thanks,

Hi All Again-

If you want to see a great picture go to www.dorganphoto.com click on
"Events Online" and then go to the Columbus Carriage Classic and then go
to the Friday event day - and THEN go to page 11.

You will see Michael Scott (remember Michael and his & Betsy's great Miss
Naveta) navigating the bridge in the Town & Country drive...he is
showing a grey Welsh X and she is literally flying over the bridge...it is
unreal - what a testament to a great team, driver and nerves of steel! ...
you go Michael!

By the way...Michael then went on to take the Maiden Division
Championship with the "airs above the ground mare".

You never know what these great equine friends of ours can do.as Red
Green says: " we're all in this together".

Great job Michael.

Such FUN!

Question for anyone that knows... They advertise tables for the show but
what is the price to see the show from the stands?

$0.00. It will be free to watch from the stands.

How does one make a reservation for the show?

If you mean to watch - you don't need one.

How many people can sit a at a table for $500.00?

I am not real sure but I think they are large round tables. I would
guess at 8 - 10

Draft Horse Journal magazines

2006-08-23 Thread coyote

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ron Ross, a friend of mine who is not on this list, has about 8 years of
recent Draft Horse Journals, some still in the plastic packaging, that
have never even been read. At 6 issues per year, that's about 48 magazines.

Ron is looking for someone who would like to have them for the cost of
shipping. He estimates that postage might run roughly $35 for the lot.
The magazines could also be picked up at his leatherworking shop, if
someone lives nearby.

Ron lives in St. Joseph, Indiana. His phone number is 260-337-5607 and
his email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please contact him directly
if you would like the magazines.

I can personally vouch for the good reputation and impeccable honesty of
this gentleman.

Wups. I stand corrected -- the Journal comes out quarterly, so Ron has
about 32 issues. Sorry for the error!

2006-08-23 Thread JadeBear

Did everybody get their entry forms for the 25th Anniversary Show? Mine
came the other day and I love the variety of classes there are! There's even
a walk-trot class for us grownups who haven't been in competition under saddle
since the Carter administration. Bogie (the love pony) and I are going to
enter that one as our first public outing together. I hope everybody brings
their love ponies and we make that class so big that they have to split it!
There's going to be a ton of things to do and see and it looks like about
a zillion stallions on the row (in case you might be Christmas shopping for
your mare). There's a ride-a-buck class too. I've always wanted to enter that
but I think I'm still about 70 pounds away. Maybe next year at Blue Earth.
Rumor has it that there will be sizeable groups of visitors from Europe
to meet...I hear they're very interested in joining our celebration and seeing
what we've been up to. I hope you'll all pack up your ponies and come to
Winona so we can show 'em what we've got.
And the evaluation will be cool too. I'm bringing Braveheart (the wonder
pony) to try a couple of the advanced tests and Bogie, who's never been
evaluated, will be making his first on-stage move (at age 14) in the
conformation
section. If there are extra points given to horses who try to kiss the judges,
then we've got a blue in the bag. Since there's a LOT of running to do in
that class, my trainer, the long-suffering Melissa, will probably have to take
him in. I'm about 70 pounds and one bad leg from being able to do that too
(rats!). Ah, well. Maybe next year.
Anyhow, it all sounds great! Who's going?

Kay
and Braveheart (the big show-off)
and Bogie (the give-me-a-carrot-and-I'm-yours-forever pony)
