Dressage whip for training
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Can someone recommend the appropriate length for a dressage whip that will be used in training to give taps behind the rider's leg? I have seen various lengths like 42" and 39." I ride Western and am not familiar with English tack. Does it really matter? Would the popular white training sticks minus the string or flag work as well? I like the idea of the long, slender, lighter weight dressage whip. Thank you. WW Reidar
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I would like to take this opportunity to Thank Kathy & Randy Johnson for their trust in me with their great little stallion WW Reidar. After what I think was a very successful year of work and learning, Reidar went home after the LaCrosse Evaluation with a Silver Medallion of Quality and back to Kathy, whom was one of the best owners I have ever been privileged to work with. And I might add the most organized, compassionate, hard working and supportive owner and friend. THANK YOU Kathy, ..it was a great ride. After his success at CDE's and Pleasure Championships prior to coming to me, Reidar rode at the MWFHC Winter Meeting in Dixon, Il, Rode at and represented the Fjord breed at the Midwest Horse Fair, in Madison, Wi. Took First place in 4 & Over stallions and Reserve Championship Halter at the MWFHC Blue Earth Show, placed in the Ride & Drive, Won the Women's Working Pleasure Driving class, Placed in Turnout and Placed in cones, and at the Evaluation he upped his score to a high red in conformation, red in draft and blue in driving. Reidar is truly one of, if not the most athletic Fjords I have ever ridden or driven. Very young at age five with great endurance and willingness to perform, Reidar was for me a horse I will never forget and grew to become fond of for his understanding of what I was trying to teach him. Being in my care for nearly a year, he made me a better trainer and taught me Fjords come in all packages and abilities, and as trainers we need to work with them with thoughtfulness and care as individuals. I'll always remember the quiet rides we had at home, just him and me - his ability to learn so quickly and what a fun ride he was. The most memorable moment though was when I handed the reins to Linda Syverson in the Double Jeopardy Class at Blue Earth - Linda who had past experience with Reidar's abilities in cart - (and is fearless) but the metal to the pedal - so to speak - and really showed me what that little power engine can do - I have NEVER been in cart - going that fast and with such tight turns, and watching him worm his way thru cones was absolutely amazing (when I opened my eyes)I know I have never been INthen OUT of any class sooo fast. Wow! If anyone is looking to "lighten up" a good mare, I highly suggest breeding to this great son of Gjest. He will place movement and presence into your breeding formula, not to mention bloodlines of value and importance. Reidar will be shown by Linda Syverson at the Villa show next month, and I know with his talents and Kathy & Randy's sincere love of him - his future will be full of high ribbons and beautiful goes. With sincere thanks and heartfelt graitude to been able to swing a leg over such a great horse. Pat Holland The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
Marta, Heldig and A2Z Thorson
This message is from: "Pat Holland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I would also like to take this time to thank Kathy Monroe and Nancy Barmore for allowing me to train and show three of their horses this year - finishing up at the LaCrosse Evaluation. Their great little mare Highland Prairie Marta took home her Silver Medallion and Heldig and A2Z Thorson both received good red's in conformation. Both Heldig and A2Z received some nice remarks and both were pleasures to present, I was honored to stand in front of. It was a good evaluation in LaCrosse this year - although temps were hot and humid, leaving those of us who dress formal for the occasion with a good fluid weight drop afterward. ; ) Both Kathy and Nancy are a trainer's dream come true, owners - giving their trust and support unconditionally, and allowing myself to do "my thing" without question. (and always providing a cooler of cold drinks near by and great "get together" dinners at night). Life throws us all many ups and downs and I just want to thank those who brighten my life by sending me their good horses to work with, who give me solid reasons for getting up each morning to spend the long days in the barn doing what I love to do. With respect and gratitude. Pat Holland The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

Re: fjordhorse-digest V2007 #184
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Yasmine, I have taken my stallion Wags o' Thorson in a few shorter distance rides. He does well in it. Generally speaking I believe you can train every horse to do anything. Thor is proof of that. I have ridden him in dressage and stadium jumping earning his NFHR Excellence award; he placed high in gaming classes; he is part of a mounted patrol unit; he has worked cattle; he did?his first CDE this year and has the NFHR Silver Level 1 and Gold Level 4 medallion (Sorry I got carried away bragging about him)The question is: How far/what level do you want to take it and how much effort do you want to put into it to get them there. Distance riding has different disciplines: Competitive trail riding - you go out in a small group; everybody has to ride the course in the same time (there is a +/- 5-minute window); the horse that is in the best condition with the lowest hart rate/respiration wins on a point system; the distances start at around 12 miles up to 100 miles Limited distance riding - Everybody starts at the same time and rides on their own as fast as they can; In this discipline it is the time that wins rather than the points for condition, but it is the fastest time that already has a certain lower hart rate (65); Once you cross the finish line your time keeps going until you call for the vet to take the horses heart rate; As you can tell there is a little bit more strategy involved in this one; the distance for this one starts usually at 25 miles. Endurance - Flat out race where the fastest horse wins unless the vet pulls it from the competition. The distance is also starting at 25 miles and increases from there. The distance riding community is very similar to the Fjord community: You are never alone and always have people to help you along. That makes it fun. The vet is there to help you assess your horse and it's condition in order to keep it safe. If you are riding with a group it is easy to get carried away and ask the horse to do more than it is able to do; the excitement of the competition may cover the early signs of exhaustion in you and you horseif that happens the vet may make the decision for you or recommends to not continue or slow down a bit in order to finish; that is a good thing and not to be taken personally. Any distance ride is a challenge and more that the average trail rider does; in order to condition your horse you should have the time to ride your horse at least three times a week 2/3 of the distance you plan on competing in a free, ground-covering trot; you should not need any tie-downs, flash bands or other aids that restrict the horses natural breathing/gait. I hope this info gives you the tools to asses your horse as to how much effort you would have to put into it. The way it sounds from the other e-mails yours is a little on the draft side which probably does not make him a natural to win compared to some arabs/morgans, but with some good conditioning he would be able to do the shorter distances. Even if you never compete; a well conditioned horse stays generally healthier than an over-weight pasture ornament. Enjoy. Happy trails Heike Lewandowski The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

My Zippidee has such a fast walk and trot most horses have to trot to keep up to his walk and canter to keep up to his long trot. He can do slow but his fast is unbelievable his legs extend out there so far. He sure shocks alot of other horse people. I beleave it is part conformation & part mind They have to have that serious want to move attitude, and excellent conformation to back it up. LOL! Anyway, this was the first time my sister attended an evaluation and she was very interested in the valuable information that Wayne and Brian shared on how to judge a horse. Also the horses that were presented were so "drop, dead, gorgeous" that my sister wanted to take them all home! She is excited about the breed and hopes to own one someday. I know my sister, and if she does get one Fjord, the "potatoe chip bug" will bite and she will end up with more than one! But my point is that it is a good idea to bring people who don't own a Fjord to an evaluation to find out what they are about. Patti did a phenomenal job with Berit at the evaluation. I still cannot believe she just started her in Jan.! Awesome job, Patti! Berit is a blue in my book too!
