Great Training
This message is from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hello All! It is great to hear all the news from Moses Lake While our farm had planned to go, I was subpoenaed for court. :-( Thus had to cancel all plans in going to Moses Lake. Anyway we stayed home and played with our horses one is named STJERNA and she is a Døle Horse. I co-own this filly with a friend and we made training arrangements as to who and when prior to actually purchasing her Stjerna went to Brian Jensen for driving training He just trained her for us this summer. Stjerna went up to the Jensens farm in May and came home at the beginning of August. Brian did an excellent job with her. She is a trotter by nature and Brian warned us that she was forward. He was able to instill respect for her handlers in that short time, respect for the cart, traffic, and the easy of a light mouth WOW, it was fun to work her both in the arena and on the road. Thank you Brian for the great training! Re: Boots
This message is from: Genie Dethloff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Robin, I feel for you! I recently went through a month of Pjoska healing from bruised/sore soles. I ordered Cavallo boots and the vet said to put them on and leave them on for several days, which you are supposed to be able to do!! It was during our heat wave - high 80s. I took them off for a while every day but after three days, her heal bulbs burst open horizontally and stunk like a burst abscess; the vet said it was a fungus from too much moisture. The boot did not breath well enough. Also there is a rough seam just by the heel bulbs that didn't help. I have in the past used for abscess treatment, the canvas boots with the leather bottom - Equine Slippers. here is the link at Dover's http://www.doversaddlery.com/equine-slipper/p/X1-04204/c2p/cs/ I had the farrier cut me a plastic hoof pad to fit inside so they held up better. The boots breath well, are easy to put on and are fine for stall rest. I would use something light like that again. If I remember correctly, I put plastic wrap over the poultice to keep the inside of the boot clean but did not have to do the duct tape. My back really appreciated it. If you can use the animalintex poultice hoof pads that would make it very easy. You can hand wash the boot in Woolite to clean up after you are done with the treatments. The more sturdy boots you mentioned might be good to use for limited turnout when your horse is ready for that. I have two sizes of the Cavallos if you want to try them, a pair in sizes 3 and a pair in size 4. They are easy to put on and adjust. They recommend putting vinegar in the boots, I assume to prevent fungus. I have also done limited turn out in a Davis boot after an abscess - I keep a really large size for soaking and a medium size for turnout. Good luck! >This message is from: Robin Churchill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >Has anyone used Old Mac, Boa or Cavallo's Simple Boots >and if so what did you like and dislike about them? >My big horse developed an abscess and his shoe had to >be pulled so now needs wrapped and will not be able to >have the shoe back on for awhile. Boots
This message is from: Robin Churchill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Has anyone used Old Mac, Boa or Cavallo's Simple Boots and if so what did you like and dislike about them? My big horse developed an abscess and his shoe had to be pulled so now needs wrapped and will not be able to have the shoe back on for awhile. This is a horse that even if the abscess was healed can't go without a shoe (he is not a fjord but I have had him a long time and will never get rid of him). Some of these boots say that can be used in conjunction with treatment of abscesses and I was hoping to put a piece of animalintex poultice or cotton with some furazone to cover the bottom of the hoof and let the boot hold it on rather than having the agony of repeated wrapping with vetrap and duct tape. Today after having the hoof messed with, poked, prodded and cut all day, it was fairly difficult to get the wrap on--I had to have my husband come home from work to help me but that can't be an everyday occurence. The vet wants me to wrap with animalintex for three days then cotton/furazone until he checks him again in a week. Any information would be appreciated. Crysten Nesseth
This message is from: Susan Cargill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> It was with pleasure that I read the post regarding the Nesseth Family and the home for two of their fjords. As many may know, Crysten is spending the next 9 months working at Nordfjordheid. She is a wonderful young woman and very talented. Longtheway Farm has the pleasure of horsesitting two of her fjords while she is away - Valebu (who will continue his training with our trainer - Laura) and Zarha (a Felix daughter) who is presently in Colorado to be bred to Obelisk and begin her driving training. Congrats to Tico who was Grand Champion at the Moses Lake Show and Flotren for getting the Versatility Award. Thanks Patti - Vivian is already talking about next year.
