RE: PNFPG Newsletter
This message is from: "Frederick J Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Ursula, perhaps you can answer why my trainer (Bonnie Morris of Shadow Mountain Stables) was turned down (by you) for a color ad in the NL even though she had her request in very early. It appears that ads are not accepted on a first come first serve basis. Color ads are reserved for the select few. Ms. Morris is apparently not among the select few. Two year old gelding for sale.
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello everyone, I have a very nice young gelding that I have had for sale, listed at $4500. Although I still believe he is well worth that price, I am in a position where I am VERY motivated to sell. So, I am dropping the price to $3000... ??? He will be 2 the end of June, and should be a good sized boy when finished growing. Mom is 14.2 and Dad is 14.1 (I believe), his full brother is around 14.3 hands. You can see his pedigree on the NFHR website - his name is Dun Lookin' Torgrim. Address inquiries to [EMAIL PROTECTED] please. Thanks! Re: How do you become an alpha rider?
This message is from: Sarah Clarke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have followed with interest the thread on space invaders, but it seemed the important stuff was being said so no need for me to chime in. But since nobody has followed up the question re alpha riders I will try to give it my best shot. I think being an alpha rider is number 1 your attitude. Then try to never ask the horse to do something he can't, and then follow through until he does it. The first time you back off from a request it may be seen as of no importance, but by the second time you have trained the horse that he is in charge. My son had a friend with no formal riding training who started coming to ride one of my mares. Even though he was green and she was green they got along famously because he was 110% convinced that she was going to go where he wanted to go, and do what he wanted to do. Years later this mare is much more trained and I give some riding lessons on her. One student always has a terrible time getting her to trot with any forwardness at all. She (the student) nags and nags and always is one step behind the level of aids re-enforcement that the mare needs to convince her that it's time to go forward. Finally I told her that we needed to spend less of our lesson dealing with issue. I had her take both reins in one hand, and use the same hand to grab the bucking strap (to give her confidence to do the next step) and then whack this mare HARD until she either kicked at the whip or moved forward. She had to do this only twice and lo and behold the mare trotted right out. (No hard feelings on the mare's part - she knew what game she was playing.) Ever since it just hasn't been an issue. The mare knows the student will get tough and the student KNOWS with confidence now that she CAN make this mare go forward. If you can't make yourself believe you are in charge, use body language and voice to pretend you think you are in charge and chances are you can convince the horse. I have often found with horse in various situations (and dogs too for that matter) that I can explain things to them and although they obviously do not understand the words, by putting the idea into words, my tone and body language will get the idea across. Some examples: There is a water you need to cross, so you begin to explain to the horse quite cheerfully how easy it is going to be and maybe even fun - convince yourself and you convince the horse. Our neighbors new dog used to come and bark at the horse I was riding since my arena abuts their fence. I just stopped and explained to her that the horse didn't like to be barked at and would she please just watch quietly. It only took a week or so and she stopped barking when I rode by. I was trace clipping one of the horses. He decided that he didn't want his tummy clipped and started making threatening gestures with his hind hoof. After a couple of verbal warnings and increasing level of threats I walked into the tack room, got out the dressage whip and gave him one swat on the butt. I glared at him and said "I have a whip and I know how to use it." He was a perfect angel for the rest of the clip job. I think it is especially interesting to note that I have heard you have to correct a horse within 2 seconds of the offense in order that they can connect the two and yet he clearly got what I was unhappy about, even though I had to walk to the tack room and back. I do alright with my Shaggy and I did well with Dorina. And my Anjee is usually a very good, fun horse to ride; but she is something else when she decides being ridden is a game or when I ask her to do something she doesn't want to do. We are still working on that. Head tossing, insecurity with me as leader, baby bucks and jigging are all already on her list of bad things she has done so far ... This is her 5th year and 2nd under saddle, and I would love to hear from others on training young horses to ride. She will be going to a trainer for another round as soon as I find one near me.
