Fjords in dressage

2008-07-08 Thread Sarah Clarke
This message is from: Sarah Clarke <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I was talking to the editor of California Riding Magazine today and she said
that August is the dressage issue.  I was thinking of submitting an article on
fjords in dressage, but I have to do it this week to make the deadline.

If anybody rides a dressage fjord and would like to tell me why, I may quote
you in my article.  (if I actually get it written.)  Or if you have had
success competing in open dressage shows tell me about it.

blind horses

The trainer I worked with for many years had a horse who was blind in one eye.
He was a wonderful Hanoverian who showed at Prix St. Georges level, while
blind in one eye. He was a true school master, I had several wonderful
lessons on him. Those of us who rode him had to learn the importance of
steering, but other than that, we wouldn't have known he was partially blind.

Hello There,

I am looking for someone that is going to the Moses Lake, WA and / or Libby,
MT shows that would like to have a helper from Norway with them.

Unfortunately, our barn is not able to attend either show this year. We had
booked other obligations that are in conflict with the dates.

However, we will have a lovely young lady visiting us here from
Nordfjordeid, Norway that we would love to get her to the shows. She is a
horse person, matter of fact she just finished competing in the Norwegian
Championships.

Anyway, if you may need an extra hand at one of these shows and are willing
to let her tag along with you as a "family member", contact me directly.

Thank you in advance for your kindness.

daily wormer

2008-07-08 Thread brass-ring-farm

I have used the Strongid 2X for about 12 years, soon after it came out.
The vet suggested it for a Morgan who got gas colic easily. It is so easy
and comes with a $5,000 colic insurance program if you buy it at the
vets, so I like that too. I get the poop checked once a year and no worms
are showing up. One also uses zimmectrin type paste wormer in spring and
fall.
My Fjords are not thin, but I don't think the cause is the daily
wormer.

One of my riding students is having difficulty with her posture and balance
due to very large breasts. She has never found a sports bra that helps. When I
have corrected her balance and posture and everything else is right, serious
bounciness occurs. Ouch.

Please e-mail suggestions privately to me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: it's the people not the horses

"Sometimes, it

I'm a little late in chiming in on this thread, but...

If I had woken up on my current property when I was a teen I would have thought
I had died and gone to heaven: Six fjords a couple of not-fjords, miles of
trail access out my back door, a sand dressage arena. Unfortunately it is MY
dream fulfilled, not that of my 2 teenage sons. About the time #1 son
Nathaniel entered high school he sat me down and we had a talk. "Mom, you have
to realize that this is your thing, not my thing. I don't like to ride; I
don't want to ride; don't' ever ask me again. I have tried to be subtle, but
you haven't picked up on my hints so I am telling you I don't want to ride!!!"
#2 son Gabe earned his boy scout horsemanship badge and enjoyed riding with one
of his friends who I also helped to earn his horsemanship badge, but when that
friend moved out of town, Gabe stopped riding. "it's just not the same riding
with you Mom." My 11 year old daughter rides in fits and starts 3 days in a
row and then skips a month.

The boys still help clean corrals, or will feed horses if I'm not going to be
home of an evening. Somehow, I just have never transmitted the joy of either
the trail ride or the perfect 20 meter circle.

You can lead a horse to water...

So I have instead mentored a teenage girl who was dying to learn dressage. I
have given her free lessons for the last 2 years. In exchange she exercises
some of the horses, feeds occasionally and has suffered my experimentation as I
polish my teaching skills.

I also think of it as paying it forward for a couple of ladies (Terri Wilson
and Hilda Willis) who provided lots of help and encouragement for me when I was
a shy teenager hanging out at the Webb Ranch.

Am I still disappointed that I can't get my boys to come on a trail ride with
me? Sure, but #1 son just graduated HS with honors, passed AP calculus and
starts his degree in electrical engineering. He'd rather rebuild a computer
than ride a fjord, and while it makes him a little strange in my eyes... I
guess I'm not going to disown him yet.
