Re: Import/ and the lovely whites

2009-04-22 Thread jernest
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com

What is interesting now, is the popularity of the whites: When I got Stella in
1986 (imported by the Unraus in 1981) the white duns weren't especially popular,
nor were the red duns. A prominent breeder sort of sneered at my choice in
fact.
But I loved the white duns and Stella II, as she is registered in the NFHR is
the
grandmother of a number of wonderfully talented and beautiful White dun and
yellow
dun Fjords, through Anvil's Stina and Leidjo. Yes, I jokingly accused Lisa of
collecting them...I would have too if I could, but as it is I do have Stella and
her granddaughter Anvil's Adel, a yellow dun. I have pictures of Lina,
Stella's
dam and some of the progeny of Stella and Lina on my Picturetrail album. I
need to
add some more, as there are now 4 or five more.

I have not bred Adel as I can only reasonably care for four Fjords and I still
have
the two "Seniors, Stella and old Bjarne, in their thirties. And I know I could
not
part with the baby.

I am fascinated by all the white and yellow duns in the registry and note that
they
seem to go back to Ola Gik and Flikka, with the exception of Brian Jensen's
German
Stallion BASTIAN VOM ODERHAFF. Also Modellen through his dam, Modella sired by
Kviten. Bonnie's colt Lordalen goes back to Modellen and back ultimately to Ola
Gik and Flicka.

HOWEVER, Solbjor Borken, the sire of Jensen's stallion and perhaps of the newly
imported white filly, is a white dun but does not have Ola Gik and Flicka in his
background. (And yes, Ruthie, maybe the same ancestors a few generations back.)
But it seems that these are new bloodlines for the white duns.

I can hardly wit to see the pictures of the new German imports!

Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where spring finally has sprung with water running
everywhere and the fjords are a mess! 50 degrees today!

Import/Export/Breeding - Long Post but Nice

2009-04-22 Thread Susan Cargill
This message is from: Susan Cargill

Karen K. - I've been thinking that when the truck comes through here tomorrow
night at midnight I might just whitewash a cute little brown dun and put her on
the
trailer but then I thought that's probably not a nice thing to do.

We also have a couple of horses that are coming tomorrow night that traveled a
long way from Germany. Linka and Alvelin, both beautiful brown duns. Alvelin
is
a youngster but Linka is four and very pregnant. Due in mid-May. As an adult
horse entering this country she was quarantined and had to be tested for CEM.
And I'm happy to say, she is negative.

We had two Mogly foals due this spring. Our first was a stillborn. It was a
very
complicated birth and for several days thought we would lose the mare, but
Petra,
a Felix daughter, is doing well. I'm sure Tamarinde will provide us with a
beautiful
foal - brown dun. Tammy has the most gorgeous eyes. I'm just praying its not
one of those little boy horses - we have enough testosterone around here right
now - (2) two year old stud colts, both are Felix sons and quite the lookers but
as Lisa mentioned, its much to early to tell. Then we have (2) yearling stud
colts,
both Hershey sons and cute as buttons. Kimo has lots of possibility and
Stendahl
has lots of possibility of becoming a gelding.

We are planning on two Mogly foals next year also. The mares have been bred at
Wisconsin Equine (even though it was not required - we tested all four mares
that
were in for breeding for CEM - they were all negative) I hope Peg is reading
this
post because OH Yenna has been bred to Erland via frozen semen. Peg always
felt it would be a good match and I agree.

There was a comment regarding breeders and the importation of fjords and I'm
sorry - don't remember the exact content. But I am a breeder and yes, on
occasion
do import horses. If you go to the pedigree site you'll see that we have
horses from
Norway, Holland, Germany, Canada and the good old USA. We have all the Fjord
colors. The brood mares are bred on a two-three year rotation and lightly
worked
in the between years. While I own a wonderful stallion I don't use him for all
the
breedings - we tend to pick a stallion that improves the attributes of the mare.

We currently have (7) two year olds - (5) brown, (1) gray and (1) white; (4)
yearlings -
(2) brown, (1) white and (1) gray (purchased from another breeder). Our policy
is
to hold on to our young stock, providing them with training appropriate to
their age,
space to run in and proper nutrition.

AMEN! And here's an eye opener for everyone who wants to breed that rare
color: the public does NOT think they look like fjords. I can't even begin
to tell you how many times I have had to explain that my red dun is actually
a pure bred fjord. She looks like a fjord to me, but not to most other
folks, not even to the horsey ones who should know breed type when they see
it. I have a friend who wanted to buy a fjord, and I showed her a lovely
white dun fjord gelding who was very well trained and everything she wanted.
She took one look at his picture and said "why does he cost that much? He
doesn't even LOOK like a fjord." Although those of us with a sincere passion
for this breed enjoy the other colors, I can see them being a bit of a
detriment if your goal is to sell outside of the little fjord community.

Frankly, in this more global economy, I

Sounds nicely idealistic, and I'm all for freedom of choice and brotherly good
will, but the ebb and flow of global marketing does financially impact the
breed and those who have faithfully supported it. Importation further loads
our present horse surplus head count. That's not sentiment, nor is it opinion,
that's bare mathematical logic.

Breed circumstances are not what they were SIXTY years ago, when the Morgan
people needed imports. And yes, "all Fjords are the same" genetically
speaking.. there can no longer be any UN-used Fjord genes anywhere in the
world, particularly so in Europe where there has been longtime severe culling
(evaluations) and over-use of selected single sires. Of course we presently
have no way of formulating that without gene mapping, but according to basic
genetic diversity 101 fundamentals, it is true.

I cannot fault those who will (romantically) have a GENUINE imported Norwegian
Fjord horse, it sounds good--like a Pepsi commercial. I like my German
Shepherd dogs to have GENUINE German lineage, my Swedish Vallhund dogs to have
GENUINE Swedish lineage, but they may not be superior to those lines already
here, and it certainly doesn't mean that other GSD and SV breeders will
appreciate my import efforts which took a bite out of their market, ha ha.

As far as CEM origins, all credible sites claim that somehow, somewhere, it
all stemmed from Europe.. it has simply been passed along to animals that were
not imported, or through contaminants, as Curtis inferred.

It is not inconceivable that the future may hold similar tragic occurrences
through the introduction of imports, (eg: "mad cow disease" from Europe).. or,
possibly even genetic anomalies, which would be irrevocably worse; as has
happened in the past to other species where the intro of a satellite into the
original corrupted breed integrity.

   Thank-you Beth.
It makes no sense to argue over buying " unproven " young stock from
other Countrys, when as breeders, we are BREEDING the same stock, one, two or
maybe 3 short generations away from those Fjords who have just been IMPORTED
by someone else. Especially, when I see people touting their cute fluffy
weaners as " herd stallion " prospects, or selling sucklings as stallion
quality.

Since THEIR sires and dams are from Fjords who walked around in Norway
.how is it that one more container of babies now instead of 10 or 20 years
ago makes any difference ? THEY ARE ALL IMPORTED Fjords, right ? I have not
seen too many Fjords used in old John Wayne movies.

When I can sit and listen for hours to Phill Pritchard's storys about
bringing back many many mares from Norway.and laugh my a$$ off at McWethys
" Big Lift " tale with the drunk Jamacian pilots, all the Fjords tied up
to the chain link fence on the tarmac and runways, OMG.

I love to convince Orville and Anita to share storys about their many
shopping trips to Norway and learn how 100's of quality Fjords, most with a bun
in the oven, and their stallions, Orjjo, Rudaren, Leidjo ect. came to be
here. 9 and the stallions that they PASSED on, now here many years, imported by
someone else, ooops. ; ) * give Orville 2 Marguaritas and
that one come up !

If people have any bloodlines of Grabb, Gjest, all of the Anvil's lines,
letters like OHF, MVF, BDF, ect. ect. someone else just went shopping for you.
They are IMPORTED linesand not too long ago.

As someone who has been accused of " collecting " both Leidjo offspring,
and Fjords of " color " lately, I confess. It comes with a burden however.
Jeff and I used to raise horses of color and show in the Paint Horse world. We
stupidly lined up our halter horses in futuritys on weekends with 50 horses
and 3 judges placing them.

If we paid whoever was " thehottestthinggoinginthepaintworldtrainer "200
bucks to lead our horse for 15 min. we won alot of pretty Blue ribbons. Every
week. If we led her ourselves.we got the gate. Every week. Jeff was
actually the bomb at standing a horse up, and looked awsome in his show stuff,
so no worries there. It just worked like that. After experiencing that for a
few years
( hard learners ) and along with the tragic genitic traites popping up (
lethal white foals who die in 2-3 days ) yet expected to follow the tradition
of BREEDING this crap for COLOR, it stopped working for us. That, and a
visit to the trophy shop and weighing those cheesy 2.00 ribbons and fake gold
plastic 5.00 trophys, compared to huge entry fees, stabeling, drug fees,
those 15 min. of trainer fees, junk food, gas to get there, well. We might be
HARD learners but we dont ride the short bus. ; /

Now.we have a few Fjords of rare colors. We are very lucky and excited
to work with these young prospects daily and try to imagine how they will
turn out. What I have decided NOT to do, is fall into the BREEDING FOR COLOR
game like the Paint world taught us, that did nothing for bettering the
breed. Ruined their breed in fact. Like when you can attend the WORLD APPY show
and in the final line-up of Champion stallions, see NO color, not a spot,
freckle, roaning, frosting, NOTHING, just Impressive looking blubber fat
halter horses. The APPY's were bred for COLOR, and Chief Joseph must be rolling
over double time at the nonsense they have created.

It does alarm me to read about ponies under 6 months old being promoted as
herd sires with high price tags, because of their rare color. It alarms me
to hear about farms liquidating Fjords from their current breeding program,
BECAUSE they are brown duns, and investing in very young stock for replacment
breeding animals BECAUSE of their color. Cranking out 100's of Fjords with
conformation and random faults like blazes, white socks ect. , now looking
to breed for COLOR, ( their words ) is not going to help the breed standard.
Esp. in puppy mill breeding programs, mass produced, bred back every year,

COLOR of a horse. I fear in a couple of years what I expect to start seeing.

Out of all 8 white, red and now yellow ( welcome SOLSKINN ! ) duns here, if
what they turn out like as proven adults, remains to be seen. I might end
up gelding the whole bunch of males, actually already started that trend when
I gelded PF Phantom, a white dun colt, our breeding. He had it all going on
with bloodlines I like, proven evaluate

RE: Import Bashing - Was CEM and Supporting American Fjord Breeders

2009-04-22 Thread Karen Keith
This message is from: Karen Keith

For those who care, here goes.

What attracted me to this unproven foreign youngstock? I wanted a white dun.
That narrows the field drastically, as I'm sure you know, Bonnie, having been
there yourself. So much for thousands of Fjords. Even at thousands, what
percentage are for sale at any given time? Being able to look outside our
borders increases the possibilities. With my foreign import, I was able to
visit the farm and see several white duns from foals at side to yearlings,
2yos, 3yos, on up to the sire. I like having choice. I guess that's clear in
my previous post. :^) I was able to have it in spades.

Additionally, Eike and Suse Schoen-Petersen are long-time Fjord breeders,
incredibly knowledgeable of international Fjord bloodlines, great
conversationalists and just plain good folk. If you ask Eike a question,
you're definitely going to get a full, complete and thoughtful answer and
learn way more than you ever expected, whether it's Fjords, cattle, pigs,
veterinary, Germany and Europe in general, and even the US. Good fun.

Am I a breeder? I guess that depends on how this unproven foreign youngstock
works out. But no, not up to now.

Am I touchy? Yes, I suppose so. I've just made a huge purchase, some might
say a gamble but all horses are a gamble, and I react to terms like "unproven"
imported youngstock. How proven is any weanling horse? I guess we can look
to its pedigree and parents' records.

My filly's dam placed 1st in her 30-day performance test for Fjord mares as a
5yo in Germany. Okay, that's a plus. Last year, as a 13yo, she was declared
overall champion horse at a Fjord show (70 horses) in northern Germany near
the Danish border. Another plus. Eike recently regaled us with the results
of my filly's sire at both Equitana and the German Jubilee Stallion Show at
Essen a month or so ago. Plus, plus, plus. Finally, my filly has a record in
her own right. As just a wobbly week-old baby, she scored highest of seven
Fjord foals at the Fjord branding. Big fish, small pond, but definitely a
plus. Then she went on several weeks later to place second in her filly class
at the same show where her mama was champion. Again, plus.

So is my import unproven? You bet she is. As was your little guy when you
brought him home. What's the difference? A few thousand miles in transport
when you come down to it. We have high hopes, but let's face it, all horses
are a crapshoot. But she is a white dun, and that's what I wanted. And like
you and your little guy, I believe my filly will some day be a positive
influence on the gene pool of the American Fjord. Only time will tell. Good
luck to us both.

Finally, I was told by one American breeder, after hearing I was importing,
that I was buying a pig in a poke. That put me off even looking at his stock,
and I was in the market for a domestic Fjord as well. Found one last week, by
the way, but had to go pretty far afield again, just not outside the country.

So now I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my little "piggy" and her
domestic but unproven companion who will act as her nanny while she's growing
up.

Mike May, I'll be sending my check to join the NFHR today if I can get the
printer working. Seems I've got some horses to register, hey?

Cheers!

Then while holding down the LEFT mouse button, drag it across all the text

Note in the edited text below. I have removed most of the header

I would say that it most certainly NOT correct. The most comprehensive
control of this infectious disease is to practice sterile technique
religiously when breeding/collecting, etc. Includes cleaning of horses,
equipment (all equipment), environment and personnel. That's a little like
saying the most comprehensive control of post surgical infections would be to
eliminate hospitals/surgeries.Just a comment from a medical provider's
point of view. No hard feelings, please. Introduction of handwashing by
Semmelweis went a long way to eliminating childbirth fever, it didn't take
eliminating childbirth :~).

Sally
Sally, do post again! We're all learning lots of things in life!
Imagine if we didn't ever go down a certain trail for fear our Fjord
would spook there again. Or never tried to canter again because the
horse got the wrong lead once or twice! Please: post! I don't like
scrolling, and maybe our dear listowner is trimming like crazy behind
the scenes, but honestly, it's not that bad in my opinion. I know
how to use the arrow keys or mouse to scroll, and I think everyone
else does too. If I'm too busy and feel insanely compelled to read
every word I'll just do it tomorrow, or delete it and know I can go

happen! What's the phrase? To err is human, to forgive divine.

Unfortunately, the way replies are formatted is the job of the email program and
the person who is using it. As far as I know there is no way to control it from
the server end, unless you can only access the list through a Web site.
