RE: fjord available in NE
This message is from: Sandra Malm Debbie, I am a 61 year old woman with one Fjord gelding who is 6 and a quarter horse gelding who is 11.. I am learning to drive the Fjord and ride him a little. My interests now are mainly leisurely trail rides with friends and buggy rides. I am hoping to be in a few parades with horses this next summer. I live in a rural area and my horses are boarded out to great people with pastures and shelter. No stall boarding is done, and I feel the horses are the better for this horse lifestyle. I love the Fjord breed for their intelligence and love of people. Let me know where you live and what you are asking for Kaya. brutal winter: was "Anyone headed south..?'
This message is from: jern...@mosquitonet.com Ruthie, your "brutal winter" seems mild to us...-20 here today, was -30 last week. my Fjords are doing fine, old Bjarne,35 and Stella, 33, get their senior feed with joint supplements as a warm mash, Bjorken, 23, gets some too, but he is a bit too fat. They all are fat, and have a heated water tank for water. Plenty of hay. They do great here, and we have had much colder weather in other winters and I am sure will get some -40's before it is over. Not much wind, tho so that IS a big factor. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, with cold -20's after the freezing rain and ice storm two weeks ago. > Winter has been brutal thus far.. has been down to zero even! roly-poly pony
This message is from: Robyn Kevlin Thanks to all those who responded. Everybody agrees (and I knew) that limiting intake is the way to go, but I didn't have a way to do that... until today. I had a long talk with the barn owner, and she's going to fence off a 20'x20' dry lot for Gaven. She'll be fed grass hay twice a day, plus all the water she can drink. She'll be by herself, but there are horses on either side. I have a propane-powered Coleman "Hot Water on Demand" unit that I use to warm the trough water a little, after the ice is broken out. There's no electricity at the barn yet. I've seen a solar water trough on the market - it holds 25 gallons and will supposedly keep the water from freezing, to 20 below. Anybody have experience with those? I live in Tennessee, so we rarely get down to 10 below, but the troughs stay frozen most of the time from December to February. Now I have to figure out how to keep Gaven from getting bored. She was in a good-sized pasture with two geldings, and was able to move around. The barn is 40 min away from home, and I try to get out there every day, but it takes 2 hours to warm the water (and you have to stand over the heating unit the whole time), and it gets dark early. With "the rest of my life", there's not much time to ride. Ideas about how to keep her entertained when I'm not there? RE: roly-poly pony
This message is from: "Curtis" Robyn Kevlin wrote: I'd say she's seriously overweight, from standing with her head in the round bale the last 30 days, but I don't know if it's bad condition for a Fjord. She doesn't have a "rain gutter" down her spine, but she's got a culvert down her croup. : ) Is this a usual Fjord thing? Different Fjords put fat in different places, but often it is on top of the hindquarters like you describe. Rather than trying to find a different type of round bale hay, you can use a muzzle for most of the day, if not full time. She can still eat, but not as much. Some Fjords are real good about getting the muzzle off. They are also good at destroying muzzles, so don't get an expensive one. If the muzzle is not possible, you may want to find another way of limiting the mares access to the round bale. Take care! ROLY POLY
This message is from: "Ardeth Obenauf" One thing to check is her thyroid. Three of my four have low thyroid which I supplement with thyro-L. Jayne still gets a tummy, so she wears a grazing muzzle every other day at times. On the water issue, they do drink more when their diet is dry hay. Some of mine don't drink much in their stalls at night and then take long drinks when they get out to the trough. ao Ardeth Obenauf The Lazy AO Farm Shelbyville, TN Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw Classified Ads: http://tinyurl.com/5b5g2f
Anyone headed south..?
This message is from: "ruth bushnell" I have a dog client who is searching for transport from here, northwest Montana, to Joplin, Missouri. She would pay a fee for the service and could meet up in a nearby city. We could meet anyone too, on this end, say for instance Spokane WA which is just 130 miles west of here. I know it's a long shot but trying anyhow. To make this Fjord related.. I thought the dog fee might help someone deliver a Fjord down that way. Also, does anyone recall the name of that site where you can advertize for a service like that? I think it was U-(something). Winter has been brutal thus far.. has been down to zero even! Up to 20* today and a big improvement! Fjords here fare well, but I hate the extreme cold on account of the seniors especially-- Teal and Odie are both 21 yrs now.. just does not seem possible.
