OK, Patti Jo and Kay... I think I have a sister of your horses. Lol. My 10
yo mare is attentive to small children like no horse I have ever had! To my
knowledge she had no real history with them.

She has a fan club of all ages. My friend and trainer used to be a
professional QH and paint trainer. He tells everyone that Soph is a real gem.
She tries so hard and is so per light in the mouth.

What really amazed me was the comment about snuggling up to odd items to
help a rider mount!!! OMG. My Soph was my pre-retirement present to myself
after TBs etc. and several serious injuries. I have been teased about using
a dumpster, tractor, large rocks... to mount and often mount on the off side
due to recovering from a second shoulder surgery. She will actually straddle
the mounting block and park as I use the arena rail to get on with one arm!!
She does this on her own and only with me!! I cannot begin to express how
special I believe this breed to be. :-)

I'm with Patti Jo on this one. The same qualities that make her Fjords
great kids' horses make my Fjords great clutzy-old-person horses. My Bogie
pony (age21) is patient, comfy and willing to stand by whatever is available
so I can climb on...and, believe me, I've asked him to stand by MANY less
than traditional objects during our time together. My Braveheart pony (age
15), who by Fjord standards would be considered busy, has always tried hard
to do whatever I've asked of him even when I wasn't all that great at asking.
We've been together for 14 years now and, although we've certainly had the
odd exciting moment, he's never taken advantage of my C- level abilities to
hurt or get rid of me. Because of him I've had lots of fun going down the
road and some pretty darn good show seasons. He, too, will snuggle up to odd
items to help Mom get on.
Nobody is perfect. Braveheart would like to go faster. Bogie would like
to go home and will reach around and bunt my foot with his nose if he feels
we've stood on the road talking to the neighbor quite long enough. But, in
spite of the fact that I'm NEITHER quick nor nimble these days, I've never
been afraid to hitch or saddle up either of my boys and go for a nice
ride/drive. I enjoyed my years with Quarter Horses, but my Fjords are the
best horses I've ever owned. I just wish I had stall space for more of them.

 Ruth,

Have to write in about the tread on Fjords and Kids. Sorry, have to disagree
 with you here. I'm wondering,
have you worked with TB's, Appy's, QH's??? Yes they can be light in the
bridle, but they also can REAR, BUCK, KICK. All the things the vast majority
of Fjords DON'T DO. I also run a lesson program for kids and adults. Mostly
kids. Yes they start under supervision but when good enough we take them to
Shows, Fairs-doing demos, and out on the trails. All where they are doing it
ALL by themselves and yes others are around but they have to figure it out
and hopefully all that we taught them will come into play. I have 3 full
time Fjords that I use. I also have 2 TB's, An Appy, and a QH. I have also
used other Fjords in the program, either others I own or those that come in
on consignment and can be ridden safely by kids.

You put the scenario out there about a bee stinging a horse, who would you
rather be on a Fjord or another breed. You said you'd take the other breed,
well... I'd take the Fjord at least ALL he most likely will do is RUN. Ever
been on a TB who doesn't like bugs??? They will rear, go side ways, try and
take off, buck, kick out, head toss and ALL in a millisecond! Our Fjords are
athletic but sorry not like some other Breeds, like the TB's. When a horse
knows it can't run thru the bit, and they have a major issue going on, that
is when they will REAR, BUCK, KICK OUT , JUMP STRAIGHT up in the air and
I've been on some that do ALL of those together!!

Horses are horses, you can NEVER be 100% sure that they won't do something
that we call naughty. They are hard wire to survive.

I LOVE the fjords for our lesson program, and I KNOW they make my program
better THAN ANY OTHERS OUT THERE. I have the best lesson horses in my county
and I almost think the state! Yes they ROCK in my arena but ... they also
ROCK in other avenues-at shows, during demos, AND on the trails. Folks have
to learn how to ride, it takes time, why not be on the most FORGIVING CALM
horse you can. Sure my QH is forgiving and calm and totally sweet but the
Fjords still out shine her. It's the Fjords and the older QH that the

Curt,

I'm using Centaur rugs. I get them at Saddlery Liquidators in Haymarket.
Bella's had hers for two years, she has a winter rug and a lighter one, more
like a windbreaker/raincoat. I just got one for Fia as well, as I may clip her
this winter since she's now in some work.

KAY, thanks. i totally agree with your statement on the right fjord is great
for those of us mature riders. though i started up nervously with Oz when i
got him, i have to say he was always super kind and forgiving of my mistakes.
the kids at the barn loved him in lessons, and he returned that with obvious
fondness for them. about the only naughty thing he did was not always steer the
best, but in retrospect, that might have had to do with his ringbone.

along comes Skylar. she is alpha in the pasture. no question. and she has a
little more forward tendencies than oz ever had. however, she is becoming my
rock. nothing bothers her, and while she would still rather gallop up a hill
than walk, if i ask for a walk, i get a walk. one of the girls at the barn
loves riding her, and everyone who has been on her has said she is fun.

i like her. we are still a work in progress, since she does have a tendency to
try and push through the bit. but she is close to the ground, perfect for this
almost 67 year old. nothing bothers her and she is making me a better rider.

I have used Hugs, Weatherbeeta, Rambo,  Shires and Dover's Rider's
International brand. I think that choosing one with a gusseted shoulder can be
helpful. Some sheets/blankets seem to be cut too big or too low so they want
to creep down on the shoulders, some are too small in the shoulders and some
are too long or short. There are brands that have ones made for bigger bodied
horses. If you are going to be using them a lot then the ones you adjust and
then clip rather than buckle make things easier.

Sarah, I am seeing this as silly in the broad context of comparing completely
anectdotal and subjective reactions to bee stings as a determination in the
flat-out prejudicial selection of one breed vs another.
Yes, I think it is silly.

However, due to your good training and instilling good habits and
levelheadedness in your students, all was well for you and your ponies.
It comes down to conditioning/training your horses to listen + submit. Each
horse's reaction will be different based on the quality of the training, breed
influence IMO, not so much.
That's all.
I didn't mean to get into a pissing match w/ you or anyone else.

Yes Fjords are special, but I'm sure many of you have special stories of other
horses. A horse is a horse. I had a TB, very spirited actually too
much horse for me but he liked being groomed would lift a hind leg, like a
male dog does when it pees, for me to remember to brush on the underside of his
thigh. This same horse ( I didn't train him to do it) would stretch out (park?)
when I would remount after dismounting to open shut our gate at the end of a
ride. He was 16.1+ hh! I'm 5'2 with short legs. To mount from the ground, I
would lengthen the stirrup on my English saddle ( before treeless saddle,
wouldn't do this with a treeless) in order to reach the stirrup with my foot.
The TB would then step forward with his front feet stretch make his back
lower easier for mounting. I had an Appy that my daughter said got a very
indulgent look on his face when ever I got on him. Each horse is special
different

I like the stories of the quietude of Fjords and I have had so many and bred
so many rock solid types but over the last few years most of the Fjords I
have encountered are very high energy and reactive. They bolt a lot, and
some of them buck and rear with the best. The Fjord horse is my favorite
breed, and i would gladly trade two lively but gentle high evaluated big
movers for a pokey Fjord of yesteryear. Like the ones you are all talking
about. I guess it depends on what you want to use them for but for those of
us who love the gentle cart ride or the easy peasy trial ride, the quiet
ones rock it! i guess it is about buyer beware and not assuming!

Hello everyone,

I have reached a point where I need to make some serious changes in my life.
So, I'm going to be letting go of my horses... I am not 'sick' or anything
like that, it is just something I feel I need to do.

I have two mares, ages 17 and 19 that are trained to ride and drive, one of
which was shown quite a bit a few years back. One is totally quiet and safe
for just about anyone to ride, the other has some spunk to her. They drive as
a pair and both drive single as well. Both have had foals with no problems.
They are full sisters, and have been together right along; I've had them since
1998. They have done parades, carriage rides, lots of trail rides, some
lessons, expos, etc. Unfortunately I've not had the time nor funds do much of
anything with them the last couple of years. I'd like to sell them as a pair,
but...

I also have a Bell Crown cart - well used but still in great condition. An
almost new pairs harness made by Smucker's Harness Shop, and another older
single harness of unknown origin (but NOT foreign made). I'll also be selling
my Morgan 4 horse slant load, bumper pull trailer. And some other odds and
ends.

If anyone is interested in any or all, please contact me privately at
