Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Melinda melinda.schumac...@gmail.com What do folks think about turning out an established herd of 5-8 horses on a 4 acre parcel of hardwood trees that is maintained, ie: fallen branches are cleared periodically. I am looking at a property for sale with limited grass pasture. The owners claim they have turned their horses (up to 9) out in the woods without problems for 24 years. Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Amy Evers fjord...@aol.com Why exactly would wooded pasture present a problem? I've had horses all my life and most of the time it's been on pastures with all kinds of trees. The only issue I can think of is if it's Oak trees with excessive acorns, and a horse that actually LIKES acorns. Worst problem I've ever had was with evergreen trees and pitch! Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Me Kint me.k...@yahoo.com 5-8 horses on a 4 acre parcel of hardwood trees that is maintained, ie: fallen branches are cleared per I was told by a professional farmer that you should allow 3 acres per cow/horse if you want the acreage to support the livestock. That many horses will turn 4 acres into a plot without any forage. Make sure the trees are not anything poisonous no matter what the owner says. Our neighbors have poisonous locust trees have turned out horses. They are just lucky their horses haven't partaken of their trees. You don't know if these people have poisonous trees are just lucky ignorant. Mary From Mary's iPad PLEASE REMOVE ALL E-MAIL ADDRESSES BEFORE SENDING OR FORWARDING THIS EMAIL. Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Krissie England bluerunf...@yahoo.com Our horses are turned out in a wooded paddock. Only problem we have is the grass does not grow as well because of the shade. So you may have to give more hay. I would check for black walnut and cherry trees, as either of those can be dangerous. Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Robin Churchill rbc...@yahoo.com I agree with Mary that you need to make sure that none of the trees are poison and with Amy that they don't bear some sort of nut or fruit that will make the horses colic, founder or get fat as pigs eating it. I have a lot of trees on my property and we have something called java plum that makes thousands of fruits and the horses like it and I have had one colic the first year we lived here when I didn't really know what it was. Also that seems like a lot of horses for that much acreage. I have 2 fjords and a warmblood on 6.5 acres that has a house, barn and small lake and I don't think it is enough room for them. I feed them plenty of hay and they still completely destroy the grass. This message is from: Wendy Weirich wweirich...@yahoo.com Also, the horses might kill the trees. Some are very destructive to living trees. Some are not. I don't know if you are concerned about the trees, but just a warning in case you are. Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Kay Van Natta jadeb...@aol.com My turnout is partially hardwood (oak, maple, hickory, birch and the odd evergreen), partially apple orchard and partially open field. They frolic in the field, stroll around or hide in the hardwoods and hang out under the apple trees...as you might expect. I've probably just been lucky but (for the last 38 years) so far, so good. This message is from: Main Email divingduoandcor...@comcast.net I would check with county services...some local agency locally...often horses ignore toxic plants and leaves until better forage is gone. Some are less picky about taste!! We have a lot of Jimson weed in our neck of the woods. I try to keep removing it. Unless a cow or horse is starving, they won't touch it, but it is toxic if they do eat it. Re: Turnout on wooded acreage
This message is from: Kathleen Prince kathl...@pookiebros.com Seems like way too many horses for that amount of land. I have 2 on about 6 acres. We've had a herd of 4 and we almost lost the front pasture. It's divided into front back. My Fjords really like rubbing on trees and they eat the moss, too. Oh, they are also nuts for acorns! Haven't gotten sick from them. We have Oaks Pines in FL. -- Kathleen Prince kathl...@pookiebros.com Check out our blog! http://www.cassidyapril.com Pookie Bros.
