i am finding the discussion about fjords and dressage very interesting, but
from a different perspective. when i got Oz, i got started in dressage because
in many cases that’s the only type of boarding facility you can find in a
certain area. you have very little options, at least where i was, to do
anything else. and most barns expect you to take lessons, since that is their
source of income.

Oz had dressage experience with his former owner, so it wasn’t a bad thing for
me to learn. it taught me balance and the value of a good seat, etc., but it
was never my goal when i got a horse. it was just what was where i was.

i think, and this is just my opinion, so please don’t flame me, that dressage
seems to get elevated to the level of being the pinnacle of what you can do
with your horse. it’s nice to see western dressage coming along, which gives us
a more relaxed version of it, though i know that some dressage riders look down
on it as not real…….hey, dressage means training, and that’s what it
encompasses, no matter what the saddle and clothing look like.

so…..what did i want when i got my first horse, was back in 2001? a horse. a
horse i could ride around our pastures, and have a nice, relaxed time. i didn’t
even know what dressage was. and i am not saying i didn’t love all the time i
spent with my beloved Oz, even though we were at dressage barns until he
retired.

now, at almost 68 (and i don’t know how that happened!!), i have the lovely
Skylar (nicknamed short-round) at a little private place, where i can ride her
or not, depending on my day, not being required to take lessons, but able to
just hack her out in her pasture, the hayfield or gravel driveway…..or just the
indoor and free lunge her, letting her buck, canter and squeal. Can she do
dressage? Yes, she has. but now is our time to just be.

I was really happy to see the Fjord horse in the Dressage Today Clinic
article!

I thought the rider Gina DeSantis did a nice job presenting her Fjord
(and thanks to her for submitting her photo). I also thought the
clinician was fair and presented some useful information. Sure there was
an error about no Fjords getting to Grand Prix, since Wez and Anne
Appleby have achieved this level (although the clinician did phrase it
in the present tense, and it is true there are presently no Fjords
showing Grand Prix).

Th article also had some stereotyping about short necks and not bending
at the poll. But the truth of the matter is that Fjords DO have shorter
heavier necks that are set on lower than horses who are ideally
conformed for the sport. However, the clinician also presented
information on how to get the best out of a horse with that conformation
(get the hind end working, quick and active, etc) and it seemed to me
that overall she liked the breed and appreciated their good qualities.

Overall I was pleased and thought it was great exposure for the breed.

Wintec wide saddles

I am wondering if anyone is using the wintec wide saddles on their fjords? My
mare is almost out of the white gullet on the regular tree.

I was told at the tack store the channel (along the spine) on the wintec wides
are too wide for a lot of drafts as they had the saddle returned and don't
carry it anymore.

Would like to hear from anyone who is using a wintec wide.

I use a Wintec wide on my Fjord; at a Fjord and Friends Fun Fest one year
the saddle fitter there gave it an 88%; Asti seems to like it and it still
seems to fit well. Funny, it's the same exact saddle I use on my Friesian,
same size and everything as Asti inherited it from my other Friesian when I
sold him!

I recently bought a Wintec Wide for my younger Fjord mare. I started her in a
Wintec Isabel saddle with the widest gullet that I use on my other Fjord mare,
but it never was a good fit and then as she started developing muscles and a
top line, it no longer fit at all and was rolling on her.

I bought the Wide at a Memorial Day sale and used it a few times and then took
it to Fjord Fest in NC where I put 30 trail miles on and probably 9 hrs of
lessons. The horse seems very comfortable in it, and the big surprise for me
is that it's narrower in the twist than my old Wintec Isabel, so much more
comfortable for me.

My two mares are very different types. The one who wears the old Wintec Isabel
is a big 14.2 hh 1200 lb chunk, and the one who wears the Wide is a 13.2 hh
900 lb sporty type. Go figure.

Bottom line: I am very happy with my Wintec Wide, and more important, my horse
is, too.
