sleeping in my arms

2007-07-09 Thread Cathy Dalton and Ernest Thompson
This message is from: Cathy Dalton and Ernest Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I worked with one of our geldings the other day, out in the fields. sigh
It was not one of our finest hours - he was distracted - hay cut in the next
field calling his name perhaps? The round bales over yonder just too
interesting? Flies?

As I was picking out his feet afterwards, back in the barn, I said to him
conversationally, That wasn't our best afternoon, was it? I gave him a rub
and then I put one arm over his withers, the other under his jaw. We stood
quietly together like that for a short time. His head lowered and he
fell asleep in my arms.

Parelli Fjords

Hi Fjord'n'Parelli Pals
Just one month into Level 1 and I say somebody should make a comic strip about
our favourite horses and Parelli...
can you just picture this ...
a) It's a Carrot STICK, not a %$#* CARROT!!
b) This means BACK UP, not EAT the rope!
c) About those missing pages in Pocket Book #3...It was just too close to
Lornie's lunch time...

...I just started working on Pocket Book 4 - no chomp marks (yet).

Even our 'Fredtacular' Fred enjoys Playtime with the Parelli games.

Warm Regards
Cathy, in (Norwegian-like) Ontario.

Hello Folks
I have had the opportunity to meet Lukas a number of times. Not only is he a
beautiful looking fjord stallion, he carries himself with dignity and
gentleness. I chatted with Liz Leader after Lukas left for his new home. As
we drew up a tally of his virtues, Liz exclaimed, And wait 'til they (his
new owners) drive him!

Congratulations indeed to Lukas' new owners! You have one exceptional horse.

The Fjord People/Family have lost a wonderful friend when Rick Leader passed
away.

My husband, Ernest and I, owe many thanks to Rick and Liz. They introduced us
to the fjords; their love for these fine horses was infectious! And through
them, we have 3 of Lukas' offspring. Fred, our Fredtacular gelding, must
have inherited his sire's wonderful nature. We are enjoying a super time
working with the 2 young 'uns, LeaderLane Lorne and SelinaSiri too.

Many happy trails, Lukas.
Many happy trails, Rick.

Fw: muzzles for fjords

Subject: muzzles for fjords

Hello Esteemed Fjord People

Would anyone recommend a muzzle for a fjord? Fred, our Fred-tacular
gelding, is recovering from founder. We would like to put him out in the
grass paddock - if only for a short while. Access to grass-as-lunch is a
no-no for Fred. Right now, he is in a small sandy paddock.
Any suggestions regarding type of muzzle, precautions, what to look for/what
to stay away from - would be greatly appreciated.

Cathy in Ontario

ps I want to send a warm and heartfelt thank you to all of you who sent
advice, experience and best wishes when Fred was suffering this past spring.
What a generous outpouring. Thank you!

pps Pictures of Fred are on the CFHA website at the present time...and the
Alberta Fjord Horse Association site also.
(How he loves the camera!)

very sore front feet

2005-06-12 Thread Cathy Dalton and Ernest Thompson
This message is from: Cathy Dalton and Ernest Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Our 8 year old gelding, Fred (heavy draft model) has often been a little
tender footed after the farrier's trimming. No trouble really - one day
tip-toeing over the gravel - fine on a softer surface. This time it's
different. The farrier suggested he has had some bruising on the sole towards
the toe. (Both front feet) After the trimming, Fred was extremely sore. That
was 3 weeks ago. He seemed to be getting better, though we felt he wasn't
quite right enough to drive and ride. We have kept him away from the richer
pasture too - thinking of founder. I have seen Fred standing with his front
heels down, toes slightly raised. There does not appear to be any puncture
marks on the sole.
Our vet came by the other day and seemed to dismiss the idea of founder. He
noticed some little lines on the sole from the toe towards the frog. He
scraped at these lines, finding nothing out of the ordinary. Now Fred is
limping worse than ever - he is resisting moving - even for carrots. (!) We
have been soaking his feet in hot water with epsom salts. When I went to
clean his feet yesterday, he bit me. Believe me, this is NOT like Fred at
all.

One indicator of founder is a faster pulse. We have taken Fred's pulse for
the last few days ...and it's around 60. (According to one of our vet books,
anywhere between 24 to 40 is normal for a resting horse) Perhaps this 60 is
within the normal range for a fjord? Any ideas out there?

Our Fred has always been healthy as...well... a horse. He loves to work. He
really is a 'spokeshorse' for the fjord breed - patient, kind and has a sense
of humor, very willing to try anything he is asked. I know he's hurting more
today- I wish I could do something.

Has anyone had any experience with bruised soles? It could very well be
something else. I read that a poor farrier job can lead to founder. I wonder
what the recovery time is... and what we can do in the meantime.
Any suggestions or insight would be truly appreciated.

Cathy and Ernie and Fred in Ontario.
