Re: Looking for a Harness
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have a set of harness that I've used with two of my Fjords. Its leather but not English leather. Nice quality, havanna and brass. If you are interested in looking I'll take some photos. It might be expensive to post to the States though - want me to find out shipping cost? Re: Two Fjord firsts?
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I am an endurance rider with Fjords (I posted them for sale here recently). My mare Ull-Mi is Intermediate (Open) here in the UK. I was hoping Rike might go further (Advanced) but sadly I'm not in a position to be able to keep them any more :((( Fjords certainly need good crewing, and they are never going to beat the Arabs in desert races, but they do a great job at completing the distance. I don't know of any other endurance RIDERS with Fjords, but there were at one time several of us that did Performance Driving - which is basically the same, but with a cart or carriage - over in central OR, including Virginia Grey with her Dusty daughter "Pixie". These drives were run the same as endurance rides, with all the vet checks and such between segments. And I can remember a surprised Vet or two over how well the Fjords were conditioned and how quickly they recovered, even with a few years having temperatures up near 100 degrees! Re: Barefoot update
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hey Corinne Sorry I can't help with respect to boots as all of my Fjords are barefoot - but I just wanted to say I'm not so far away from you, I'm in Norfolk. I haven't seen any other Fjords out and about round here, so it would be great to bump into you sometime. Will you be doing any pleasure or long distance riding? My first horse (not a Fjord) was sold to me as 'a horse that could only be cold shod'. My farrier was very patient and hot shod her first time without a problem. That was many years ago now, but she is still an angel to be hot shod. Maybe your farrier might have more success than the previous owner's farrier? Congratulations on your new Fjord :) Tanya Norfolk, UK - Original Message From: corinne lusher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com Sent: Monday, 8 October, 2007 7:49:43 PM Subject: Re: Barefoot update This message is from: "corinne lusher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This is my first post, so here's hoping I get this right! I have a fjord gelding who is happy to have shoes on his front feet but I am told by his previous owners that he will not allow the farrier to put them on his back feet under any circumstances (no idea why, he is fine having them picked out and doesn't appear to have back problems). I've had him for 8 weeks, he was unshod when I got him but was footy on rough ground so my farrier has put front shoes on which has cured that problem. He is not footy on his back feet, but the hooves are chipping and I'm wondering about trying out boots. A couple of people have mentioned 'Old Macs' and 'Easyboot Epics' - have you tried them and what are they like? How long do they last? They are not cheap so I wanted some feedback before I go ahead and order. Re: hoof colour
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My colt, Sleipnir, was born in April this year. He has fabulous breeding: by Pera Gut, a Norwegian stallion, winner of Nordfjordeid Stallion Show klasse 2 in 2002. Out of Rike, my Swedish mare who won the UK's Champion Mare under well known International Judge Susan Hellum. Sleipnir is a cracking Fjord with lovely conformation and his sire's sweet temperament. He would definitely have been a stallion prospect, BUT he has a mixed colour hind hoof. No other white marking, just a mixed hoof. Such a shame! For this reason, I had him gelded last month, but he will make a superb gelding :) >one of oz's back feet is white, and joe said he hadn't seen that >before in a fjord. no white sock or anything, but there is a >definite white stripe on the foot. > >laurie The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
Re: question for the list
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have a Fjord that scours when fed lower fibre forage (like grass or rich haylage). In fact about two weeks ago she had a nasty bout of Azoturia which we are attributing to a particular big bale of haylage. I have found that by increasing the dry matter fibre she gets really helps the situation. Over here in the UK we have a chaff called Hi-Fi Lite http://www.dengie.com/pages/products/fibre-feed/hi-fi-lite.php . It is dried alfalfa/lucerne and straw, 40% fibre and very low sugar - presumably you have something similar there? I have found that feeding her significant quantities of this keeps enough fibre in her diet to get her gut working healthily. Good luck with your Fjord! Re: better bitting
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I ride one of my Fjords in a Dr Cook bitless bridle, but I drive her in a Liverpool bit. The other Fjord is ridden in a 'happy mouth' snaffle. Re: working with mares
This message is from: Tanya Manser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I expect the mare will be a hit with both geldings :) If there is any problem it might be because she becomes over popular, or the two geldings might compete for her favour (and so she may defend herself). But if the geldings are both placid - or if one ranks significantly higher than the other, then I suspect it won't be a problem. It should settle down quite quickly. Can you run the mare alongside the geldings to get them used to each other for a week or so first? Then introduce one gelding to the mare for a day or two. Then put all 3 in together? I have 5 mares (3 Fjords) and one gelding (Fjord) in a herd. The mares are no problem at all! They are certainly not 'mareish'. The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
