I have used garlic for 5 years with great results for fly control. Several
friends now use it.

Does anyone use a Mylar bit and do you like them? I am thinking of a 3

My Boombah loves her Garlic Cookies. She has two daily either alone or in
her Supplement Soup. Some people think I'm crazy thinking that garlic will
control the fly problem but so what. It seems to work for her.

I get the garlic product "Bug Off" in bulk from Summertime, Inc.

GARLIC COOKIES

  1. 2 cups garlic powder
  2. 2 cups Nutrena Lite Balance
  3. water
  4. about 1/4 cup molasses

Mix #1 and 2.
Add #3 and mix
Let stand for a half hour or so
Add #4 and mix

Put on cookie tray sprayed with Pam or whatever as the cookies stick and you
may never be able to clean your cookie sheet. Put about half an ice cream
scoop of dough for each cookie.

350 degree oven at first for about 30", then lower to 300 for awhile, then
250 for as long as necessary. Time and temp here depends on oven, size of
cookie. Experiment.

SUPPLEMENT SOUP

Mix:
1. about half coffee can of Nutrena Lite
2. handful Norwegian Kelp Meal
3. "Joint Health" (Summertime,Inc.) 1 scoop (scoop provided) 2
scoops is initial first week loading dose
4. water, enough to mix the dry stuff with the Nutrena. Too much
will end up on the ground, dripping out of mouth when head
raised
5. a couple of Garlic Cookies if you don't give them at other
times.

I am now using the "Joint Health" as Miss Boombah was diagnosed at Davis
last week with osteoarthritus of the knee. Poor little thing. Before Karen
Keith and I had her she probably had a hard life on a dude ranch in Nevada
with someone I don't care to mention. I suspect she was "rid hard and put
away wet" on most occasions. The docs at Davis said "only lite driving and
on level ground and with bute as needed. Fortunately we have a lot on level
ground and she does need to be worked regularly to help control the problem.

I'm very sad but glad that I have her and that she will continued to be
cared for with love.

What is it that is so hard to comprehend? I ranted on just yesterday about
trimming replies. I threatened loss of posting privileges. And yet, just
minutes ago, a reply showed up in my In Box which contained the entire
message to which it was replying.

Maybe we should have an open discussion here about just why people can't
seem to extend this little courtesy to the rest of us on the List. Although
it is not Fjord horse related, I will welcome such a discussion until such
time as everyone understands what is wrong with untrimmed replies.

In addition, anyone who doesn't know how to trim their replies should feel
free to ask now. Chances are that someone here is using the same email
software and can tell you exactly what to do.

Come on folks, those of you who are tired of scrolling through untrimmed
replies on the Digest, speak up now. Those of you who are unclear how to
trim your replies, ask for help now.

We are going to start having all replies trimmed, even if I have to shut off
posting privileges to half the List.

This message is from: prairieparad...@yahoo.com

I have a family that is starting their search for the right Fjord. My
broodmares are perfect for them, but they are my prized broodmares and I
would be asking more for those mares than these folks would want to pay. My
young stallions would also be great, but I would need to geld them for their
purposes and I prefer to keep the boys intact for breeding. The family
thinks that one of my fillies would work, but I don't think that it will be
a good match right now, so I am declining to sell her at this point.

This family is pretty new to horses and not capable of evaluating whether a
horse is just what they are looking for. They are sold on the Fjord breed
after meeting my herds and riding my broodmares. I have offered to help them
evaluate any horse that I do not own, and have encouraged them to seek out
other 3rd-party evaluators near a horse that they may be considering.

I want to give the family a list of the 3rd-party Fjord sellers, consignment
sellers and evaluators out there (not necessarily official Evaluators, just
knowledgeable folks that can advise the family on a particular horse). I
know of Patti Jo Walter, Pat Holland, Corinne Logan, Beth Beymer/Sandy
North, Carol Rivoire and Linda Syverson-Kerr. Are there others out there
that I can put on a list to provide to these folks? Please email me off-list

Subject: Moon Blindness in my Fjord

This message is from: "Clinton Nesseth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello List,

Our little fjord horse, Freja, has a great big heart. She is now retiring
from her duties as a Hippo therapy and Therapeutic riding horse. The cause
of her dismissal came quickly and is quite a shock to her big family. Freja
has spent 9 or so years of her life as a beloved pet, a trail companion, a
training method guinea pig, attempted dressage pony, and lastly a fantastic
therapy horse whom has helped to teach many children social skills, speaking
skills, and muscle control. In the last few days she was diagnosed with
Uveitis, a rare ocular disease, and has completely lost vision in her left
eye. Due to strict NAHRA regulations, she is unusable as a therapy horse and
must be retired immediately from their program.

Freja's symptoms were discreet. She has spent the last year happily at
Nature's Edge Therapy Center as an important component in their program.
Children are immediately drawn to her for her sweet face and gentle
disposition. She has always been calm, understanding of strange human
antics, and quite an easy keeper. (A strong advocate for the fjord breed, I
must proudly state) Late last week during her daily conditioning, her
handler noticed a large cloud in her eye. Immediately, a veterinarian was
called and a diagnosis was made. It must be Uveitis, aka Mooonblindness or
UV blindness. Caught early, she was treated with 2 hopeful optical solutions
that were to help regain her vision. After little to no improvement, a small
decrease in swelling at the back of the eye, her vision is completely lost
in the left eye, and we're being warned that complete blindness may ensue.

What does the future hold for Freja? For now, she will return home to live
with 9 other fjords at my home. Freja spent her first 8 year of her life on
our farm in northern Wisconsin. She taught me all about horses; how to
scratch them in the best spots, to hang on tight as the herd would gallop
out to their big pasture on summer nights, how there are many ways to get
disqualified in a dressage arena, and most importantly, the special bond a
young girl and a young fjord mare can have when growing up together.

There is not too much treatment for equine blindness. Our biggest hope is
that the blindness stays in one eye, and she can become a companion for one
of our other horses. We have been suggested few treatment options. Most
importantly, her eyes must stay free from UV exposure.

Does anyone have any experience with blind horses? Or know anything about
Freja's illness? Any help or suggestions are welcomed, and we really hope to
be able to adapt our lifestyle optically impaired fjord.

But for some good news, our first foal arrived today! -A little colt out of
EWF Elsa and Smedsmo Graen. He was a bit confused as to whom his mother was,
but was up and milking right away.

Ha det bra,

Crysten Nesseth

DNA typing is required for NFHR registration of stallions & mares to prove
their parentage. That way we know for sure they are purebred Fjord Horses.
Geldings are exempt unless they are going to be in an Evaluation. They have
to be DNA typed for the Evaluation since their scores can count for their
parents Hall of Fame award.
