Re: hives
This message is from: Lisa Sherrodd [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have had a huge problem with hives with one of my mares this year. I finally gave her a shot of Prednosone and that took care of it. She had huge hives all over. So far so good after the shot. Lisa in South Dakota Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

This message is from: Karen McCarthy [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] They gave him a homeopathic remedy, Apis melliflora It really works! I second this information , Jean. I have been using homeopathic herbal remedies on the horses, (and myself) for the past 8 years and yes, they do work. I am a naturally skeptical person, so it took alot of convincing initially, but I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend them now. They are used alone or in conjunction w/ traditional medicines - depending on the severity of the ailment, etc. Havea great weekend, all. This message is from: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] My friend's quarterhorse had them very badly with the mosquitoes up here. They gave him a homeopathic remedy, Apis melliflora (or somethihng like that) which reduced the hives a great deal. Apis refers to bees. It comes in a vile of small granules,or pills and you place about 5 of these in his lower lip, between lip and gum. (Or he justs eats them They are sweet so he won't mind. It really works! It is some kind of new product that came out of the space program for killing bacteria. My friend no longer has the bottle, so I don't know the manufacturer. It comes in a spray and as a shampoo. She bought it at her local tack shop/feed store. Hope it works for your problem. Mary == Mary Thurman Raintree Farms [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ DO YOU YAHOO!? Some of her neighbors within a half miles also had the same problem. The vet did a culture on one of the hives and turned up a staff infection, which he said could definitely be spread by flies. She used a new biotech space-age spray on them, and the horse got better. I don't remember what she said the name of the spray is, but I remember it was in a black spray bottle. I could probably get the name and maker from her if you are interested. Mary == Mary Thurman Raintree Farms [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ DO YOU YAHOO!? Re: hives
This message is from: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] Julia, It may very well be the mosquitoes or other insects. A friend has a Quarter horse who really breaks ou in hives with the bugs, especially the mosquioes. They were using the Homeopathic remedy Apis Mellifica (or something like that, starts with APIS) and it relly worked. the next year they started feeding Garlic powder which kept the bugs off. This spring and summer there has been a problem in our area with the injectable strep(strangles) vaccine causing several cases of hives, some severe and some mild. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, MARY, BUT WE HAVE NOT VACCINATED FOR STRANGLES, AND 2 OF THE HORSES WHO HAVE BROKEN OUT CAME FROM TWO DIFFERENT FARMS IN DIFFERENT STATES. ONE CAME IN 6 WEEKS AGO AND THE OTHER 2 WEEKS AGO. THEY ARE PASTURED A 1/4 OF A MILE FROM EACH OTHER ON OUR FARM, ONE DRINKING FROM A SPRING AND THE OTHER FROM OUR WELL WATER. Re: Re: hives
Several of our horses had an allergic reaction to wet clover or something growing(bacterial perhaps) in our sodden fields this summer. Started on their muzzles and also on pasterns and fetlocks. Some had the reaction on flanks and bellies. Small bumps(pustules) ,apparently not itchy ,that were somewhat weepy, but not overly so. My daughters Welsh pony's nose which is white actually cracked and became quite red. We washed the badly affected areas with betadine and that seemed to work. Also mowing fields very short and more often seems to have arrested the problem. The only other experience I've had with hives was due to an allergic reaction to the soap I washed the sheets in. Good luck

We have had several cases of hives this summer, one severe (legs swelled, leaked lymph fluid). Julie, One thing you may want to check into. This spring and summer there has been a problem in our area with the injectable strep(strangles) vaccine causing several cases of hives, some severe and some mild. The more severe ones are difficult to clear up and seem to keep recurring until the reactive agent is cleared out of the horse's body. The owner of a local stable where we keep our horses part of the year had a real problem with it. Seemed to be a bad batch or something, as all his horses were immunized from the same batch. One horse, which was for sale, just stopped breaking out in new hives a couple of weeks ago. He was immunized in April. The frustrated buyer hung in there anyway because he really wanted that horse. He was delivered last week, finally, and still seems to be ok. Hope this helps you. Mary == Mary Thurman Raintree Farms [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ DO YOU YAHOO!?
