Busy Fjord-y weekends lately - & our Fjords on Windsorstar.com
This message is from: Diana Calder The past few weekends have been busy ones for the Calder family & our Fjords (Steinacker's Donnie & Deere Country Dawna). The Friday before Labour Day was the Harrow Fair Draft Horse & Pony Show (we showed single (Donnie only), team, and tandem). The weather was perfect, sunny but not too hot and with just enough breeze to keep the flies at a manageable level. We took home a nice assortment of ribbons. Along with his third place ribbon for single draft pony over 48", Donnie received what I consider the ultimate compliment from a judge - "He's just a nice little pony that does everything that's asked of him." Yep, that's just the kind of animal that I want in my barn! The folks with the flashy, high strung, ponies and horses that snagged the first & second place ribbons are welcome to them - I wouldn't trade for all the first place ribbons in the world! The Saturday of the following weekend was the Harrow Agricultural Research Station's Centennial. The local carriage club had been invited to bring a few horses out but, due to various scheduling conflicts, we were the only ones who made it. We hitched the team to the wagon briefly, did a couple of demos harrowing a plot of land, and spent the majority of the day supervising & answering questions while the Fjords ate, preened, ate, posed, ate, and soaked up all the oohs, aahs, scritches, and pats that they could possibly absorb in a day. Then, this past Sunday, we took our Fjords to the Cottam Horse Show, which this year was part of the Essex County Farm Hikers Tour. The Windsor Star had a reporter on site for a good portion of the morning and, Fjords being the photogenic crowd pleasers that they are, he spent a good chunk of time hanging out by our trailer. There's a short video feature about the horse show at: http://www.windsorstar.com/news/videos/index.html#i_OJtEqJHoYMvZConjudp1mTjOql_0Z1 as well as a small photo gallery: http://www.windsorstar.com/news/photos/Gallery+Cottam+Horse+Show/2014349/story.html Unfortunately, there's no photos of the hitch classes. We showed single (Donnie only), team, and tandem again, and ended up with a mix of seconds and thirds for the day - not bad at all, considering how huge the classes were. We didn't place in every class - the line classes were a total washout - but we did place in all but two of the driving classes (ladies' single, which was an *enormous* class that the judge dismissed about five of us from without even lining us up and that *still* left about ten in the ring, and a timed cones event). We even managed to snag a second (out of three entries) in tandem with me driving, finishing over a much more experienced tandem with a much more experienced driver (his ponies were having an off day). We'd previously landed a second in tandem at Harrow but we'd had an experienced driver handling the horses for that class while I rode along; at Cottam, he rode along with me and I drove, so that ribbon obviously means a lot more to me personally! We'd actually showed tandem a couple of times last year - sort of - my dad and I had each drove one horse since they were green at going in tandem and we were green at driving a tandem. This year, I'd had a chance to get a hands-on lesson from an experienced multiples driver (Kyle David, the same one who helped out at Harrow and Cottam) with our own horses at one of our carriage club's events earlier in the summer. That made a *huge* difference in understanding how to handle the lines. I actually drove the tandem at the Ridgetown Horse Show in August but we were the only entry in the class and, while we didn't have any real "thrills" or serious incidents, it was pretty obvious that we were all still pretty green. Part of the problem was Dawna's tendency to consistently drift to the left but an even bigger part of the problem was a lack of confidence on my part. So, my dad bolted an old bus seat on a stone boat and we hitched the tandem to that for me to practice. We put the everyday nylon work harness on them and I drove them on the hay field stubble. They had to actually *work* to pull the stone boat, unlike when hitched to the cart, and I knew that if something went wrong, I didn't have far to fall and they likely wouldn't go more than a few dozen feet before stopping to graze. It did wonders for my confidence and the fact that Dawna had to actually work to help pull helped to counteract her tendency to drift out of line. She still tends to drift left but not quite as badly as before. Of course, I'm now aware that she also tends to drift left as a single, so this is a bad habit that's obviously going to require considerably more work to "unlearn". This weekend, there are two events that we may, possibly, take part in - the Ruthven Apple Festival parade on Saturday (though

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm kind of excited. We had a reporter from the local paper out last night. Every so often she does a story on a different breed of horses for the sports section of the paper. This time she wanted to feature Fjord horses, so.. Our horses will be in this week's Friday paper. Happy Days we have our Fjords!
This message is from: Jayne Malueg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A bit of a windy post - just so excited! Last week we put the finishing touches on the temporary home for our 2 new Fjords (first horses since I was young - yes, it's been a few years). We are going to put up more "permanent" fencing once the MN weather behaves. Since we have heavy clay soil it makes it difficult to put in nice wood posts in this wet and cold weather. Anyway, since their home was ready we picked them up on Saturday. They are RL Guri a 4 year old mare and Cnut an 8 year old gelding. Guri is beautiful and just as sweet as she can be! She has been handled, but is untrained. She is very obedient and has done exactly as asked on initial halter walks. Cnut is very handsome and quite a bit more opinionated than Guri. OK I'll say it, he's a stubborn Norwegian! He has been ridden a great deal, but not since last summer. A bit rusty, but I think he will be fine. If he shows any bad habits I will bring him to a local trainer rather than work him myself (I'm rusty too). I have been reading about Fjords and what eaters they are so when the first thing they did was put their heads in the grass it didn't really surprise me. However, I did think they would eventually raise their heads. I think they will make a good driving team because they go through the pasture side by side in perfect step - heads down eating of course. We must be able to translate such teamwork into performance somehow! Our new Fjordies are a hit with everyone! It's fun to show them off isn't it? I didn't get to go to Waverly on Friday - I wanted to meet some of you. We do plan to go to Blue Earth and I hope to see some of you there. Thanks for the help with our trailer needs. The new stock trailer worked perfectly and the Dodge Dakota handled the round trip of 8 hours just fine. I have been keeping all of your Service Men and Women in my prayers. My Nephew is a Calvary Scout in Iraq and we are all very proud. Thanks for letting me go on about our new family members - like you had a choice. Re: Our Fjords are famous! =))
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Ruthie, I get that magazine and saw the picture you speak of. A lovely picture. It was a good article too, and just days before I got the magazine I had been seriously giving thought to letting my 2 bred mares stay to pasture with the stallion come summer, when they foal. They are with him now and are a very happy little group. The previous owner had always let him run with the mare and baby, with no problem. I have just not had the courage to try it in the last few years. After reading the article, it helped me make the decision to try it. I can only hope my experience is as good of one as yours has beenbut I wont know till I try it, will I ? :) Take Care, A. Day P.S. Hope everyone's Turkey Day is a good one!

This message is from: "ruth bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> THANKS Jean... we remove Thorson in the last few weeks before foaling... not that it wouldn't be fine maybe, but our concern is that it might make the mares nervous (having their "man" nervously pacing up close, when he should be off somewheres out of sight boiling water instead= Then a couple of weeks or so after the foal is born he is let back in. He has always been perfectly wonderful with the babies. This message is from: "Joe Glick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have a crossbred mare and stallion (Standardbred/Haflinger) that I keep together all the time. The only time I separate them is from the time she has her colt till she is bred again (By another stallion, my stallion is her half brother). This spring I took them both out to the pasture in the morning, around 8:00 AM. At 12:00 noon our neighbor called and asked if we knew that there is a baby horse in the pasture. We went out to find all three happily eating grass in the same pasture. No problems. I find it so much easier to handle my stallion if I keep him with the mare. She keeps him straight, so I don't have to. I wouldn't consider keeping a stallion separated from the herd, unless I have to for safety reasons or if a mare is in heat that I don't what bred. It's unnatural and makes them harder to handle. This message is from: "ruth bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Warning: bragging Many of you know the twin gals that took the Libby Show photos from "Mirror KB Ranch".. They have taken many photos of our Fjords here on the Bushwhacker Ranch, one of which was just published in "THE HORSE" magazine on page 43 as the lead in photo for a little article, "Keeping a Stallion with a Foaling Mare," by Sue McDonnell. It shows our stallion "A2Z Thorson" leading his happy band of mares and foals. How exciting = I would be glad to send the photo to anyone that would like to see it or you can go out and buy the magazine! Thorson is a wonderful papa who benevolently oversees his mare harem and their foals tenderly on a daily basis. He deserves recognition and publication! WOW! we have the big head today ! =)) Ruthie and Bushwhackers, NW MT http://www.libby.org/~bushnell

hello, dear fjord-lovers! this list is a great idea indeed and I am very happy today to meet all of you! I have one Fjord, he's called Sybren and is 10 months old. We live in Belgium, but he's in the Dutch Studbook. He is -of course- the sweetest, most beautiful and funniest foal I ever saw. He's with me since January 28th. Becaus she's still "my girl" and for ever will be, I should tell you also about my Fjord Unna. She was the animal I loved most in the world and she died very suddenly, on November 15th of last year, from collitis. She was only 2 years and half old and I miss her every minute. I am very happy to have Sybren. He is a kind of nephew to her, as Sybrens father Holmar was Unna's grandfather, but that's not why I am so fond of him, though it's a nice detail. I walk with him a lot, he is so cute, he follows like a dog and he likes to play with the skippy-ball and with the other two ponies (a 4-year-old Haflinger, Kitty, and a 10 months old Shetland, Janosch). And (big secret) I am very much in love with a Fjord-gelding who is in a manege nearby. He's called Flor and that's everything I know of him. So I'm subscribing to all kinds of games and contests, hoping to have one day a big bag full of money ;-) and to get Flor out of his box and to us... Until then, I'm happy to give him a carrot from time to time (and he already knows me!!!). so now I'm curious about your fjords... Saskia
