Hi. I use Renegades on my two fjords for going out on trail rides or drives. I
have found them to be easy on and off. I rasp the boys' feet  every two or
three
weeks. They are five and six years old and have never worn shoes. They
have
lovely, hard, barefoot feet. I have always done them myself. I have a
farrier
check them when the shod horses are done and so far, so good. Doing
this has
saved me a ton of money over the years!
Good luck,

I
like the Renegades, but they do not make boots for horses with big feet.  I
just ordered a pair of Easyboot Gloves for my horse, which appear to be much
easier to deal with than the Easyboot Epics.

HOWEVER, Easycare is coming out
with a NEW boot that is supposed to be easy to
put on.  Tomorrow, on their
website, they are going to show the first picture of
it.  By April 25th, they
will be on the market.  Maybe this is finally the
miracle boot.

gail
Does
anyone use boots to ride in? What kind? I have been advised to ride him in
shoes or boots from now on, and I think I prefer boots, as we don't ride all
that much. I would be interested to know what works for you and your Fjord.
As always, thanks for your advice.

I like Old Macs the best; pricey, but easy to put on and off, but they don't
come off on their own. (I use them on my Friesians, my Fjords are doing well
barefoot).

Hello list! I hope Spring has found it's way to you and yours. It is with
MUCH happiness that I can tell you that Willi FINALLY gets his hospital
plate off in about 3 weeks! Say it with me...AMEN!!! He can go back to his
run in living situation, which will make him a happy boy. He has had limited
turnout since mid February, and his charming personality returned quickly
after that. He will get regular shoes on the fronts for the next two cycles,
and then we'll see after that.

recheck on Friday we will be given the green light to go home. Some stall
improvements are in the works where Willi normally lives to make sure he is in
the environment he needs. I did my first hoof care tonight almost be myself.
He had to be twitched though, he is just sick of people messing with that
foot. We should be off the SMZs in a few days as well. And I can take him out
for a bite of grass every night as long as it is dry. He is loving that. Dr.
Freer expects this to go for 3-4 months as we are now. I can live with that.
He will be happier when he can go back to his run in though, for sure.

It seems you and WIlli are over the hump - yay! Is there any way to
maybe "hide" the Bio-sponge in some applesauce? When I've had to use
nasty tasting drugs w/Cass the applesauce has been the trick w/just a
touch of yogurt. Last Dec. she was on 2 different kinds of
antibiotics for a month for mastitis. Her tummy stayed good despite
it all.

Hey Kathy,
I know it must be immensely horrible for the poor guy to be chugging
Bio-Sponge daily (yeah, it's like asking someone to pease eat & swallow a
whole bowl of clay, yuk!) but I am sure he is doing it as a gastric
preventative bc he's on the HD antibiotics and wants to keep his gut happy w/
and colitis freeso keep it up, it's a great "hind binder" (w/ apologies to
Bob & Ray...and if you don't know who they are, then you must be under 50 ;~))
I have used it on 3 different horses and it certainly does the trick, a bit
spendy though, but Good Luck and so glad things are going well!

Sponge twice a day and Probios once a day. So far no troubles. Willi does not
like the Bio Sponge at all. Has anyone used a similiar product that may be
more palatable?

So sorry Willi has to have surgery. Glad the prognosis is good

If you can find a book about clicker training I bet that would help both you
and Willi get through his boring recovery time. Gives him something to
learn and occupy his mind in a positive way for a little bit of the day. I
have a desire to try it with mine. Seems most folks and their equines must
love it. I'd also find one of the slow feeders for hay to help him not get
frustrated.

Keep us posted on how things are going. Hope these ideas might be of help.

Well, good and bad news. Wm Fjord . is having surgery on Tuesday to
remove the tumor. He will have major stall rest as part of his recovery,
which will not make him happy.

So, where can I buy Elastikon by the case?
What's a Fjord's favorite stall toy?
...
Oh, and the prognosis is very good she said.

Any advice would be appreciated, and next Tuesday morning, if you could send
good fjordie thoughts his way that would be could too.

You might consider Soft Ride boots if he needs cushioning.

Here is the amazon link to what they offer in the way of Elastikon...so you can
look at pricing.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=elastikon&x=0&y=0

I ordered a bunch of supplies for wrapping from MedVet International. Here is
their link to their Elastikon search section.
http://www.shopmedvet.com/category/s?keyword=elastikon I also got cotton
padding...various things from them. Just be sure you know what you are
ordering. I did buy some closeout stuff that was like vetwrap, and it did not
stay on very well...was a cheaper version.

Ask your vet if he/she recommends Vetricyn. People say it is wonderful for
healing wounds. It is hyrdolized water...or something like that. Our barefoot
trimmer trims for a diabetic wound care specialist who swears by it.
