I took my first riding lessons at 8 yrs old on thoroughbreds, 16 H, most
were retired hunters. Took a ton of lessons then rode out by myself all
over the countryside. Learned real quick to take a rein behind the boot
heel to circle.

Had a great trail ride today, started out gangbusters early this spring,
then surgery, now getting back to work again. It's been an adjustment for
Thor, never having his brother to go with, always by himself. We circled
alot and kept at it and now he seems to enjoy a nice ride out, has regained
his confidence.

He is heavy on the hands driving with a group of horses, wants to jig and go
all the time. Any hints appreciated.

Brigid, as regards your questions about Fjords and children - I have to agree
with a few of the list members
who mentioned Fjords are "still" horses. If I have one problem with the breed,
it is with the folks who believe
they are infalable strictly by virtue of being Fjords. Though the breed in
general has one of the mildest
temperaments, their personalities do run the gamut. As you have seen by Jodi's
post, children love and trust the
Fjords. However, the unspoken part is that Jodi has been taught since age 2
how to remain safe in the
presence of multiple giants stomping around her. And the Fjords she has
contact with have been selected
specifically as the typify the desired Fjord temperament.
