RE: show horses
This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, The point I was trying to make is that you if you WANT TO SHOW your horse you can do so just for fun and without great expense while getting the reward of showing off the Fjord breed. If you DO NOT WANT TO SHOW your horse, what's the problem? I certainly wasn't telling people they have a obligation to show. 99% of the time, I am not showing Tank. I am riding him or driving him around my home. When I said I showed in 5 (actually 7) states, it might help to know that I have lived in border cities. Omaha, right on the Iowa-Nebraska border, and Las Cruces, right on the Texas-New Mexico border. I rarely go more than 50 miles to a show. And I never showed more than 4 or 5 times a year, if that. I can't afford it. It's why we haven't done the two CDE's in Arizona the last two years (though I have not given up hope). I really do miss the annual 6 hour trip to Blue Earth every July, however, which is the furthest I have travelled with him. The MWFHC show in Blue Earth is one of the ! very few things I miss when I left Nebraska. Next topic Cynthia Madden Las Cruces, NM [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.geocities.com/cmadden88011 Friends. Fun. RE: show horses
This message is from: Cynthia Madden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> A show horse is in the mind the rider/driver. I thought Michelle's recent story of taking the Fjord to a show where they usually rode their quarter horse was a great example What's the purpose of showing in open shows? To have fun, for kids (and adults) to learn how to do your best, and to win or lose gracefully. Note...to have fun is the first criteria in my book. I have taken Tank to an open show series this spring and we have enjoyed having a good time and showing lots of people their first fjord. I paid $1,100 for Tank 10 years ago and have taken him to shows, horse fairs, etc. in five states. We go to show people how neat Fjords are and to associate with other horse people (Fjord people preferably but not much available now in southern New Mexico). My cart and harness cost about $1,600, the price of a really good saddle. You don't need to spend a lot of money to show. You need pride in your horse(s), a sense of humor, and a desire to improve yourself. You do have an obligation to your horse and yourself to be prepared, be neat and ready to compete. You don't need lots of silver or brass, or really expensive stuff and flashy clothes. A good judge will pick the best team. I think Tank is a good (but not outstanding) example of his breed. He is certainly an outstanding example of their personality. He has made friends in many states. He is a homebred horse (in some people's definition). In my estimation, he is a good show horse. I am not a breeder. I just want to have fun with my horses. I'll take him anywhere and I'm not ashamed if we don't win. The comments of people who come up to visit us and stroke Tank are more than enough reward. I've always thought of Tank as an outstanding Norweigian Fjord Horse Ambassador! Linda in Lindenfels - > Yeah but, with a Fjord, you don't have to choose! :-) > > Lori Albrough "YOU DON'T HAVE to choose" if you have unlimited resources, spare time, spare money, ample opportunity (for know-how ) ...but if you didn't, you might choose the economy model Fjord, less svelte, less-trained... and take the trail less traveled. Most families that are consumed with making economical ends meet simply haven't the resources available for the "tour d' Show" with a $25,000 Fjord (still awaiting the parentage of who laid this "golden egg" =)) but I guess if we researched back far enough, we would find common denominators throughout?) What constitutes the value of any Fjord would probably be that which they are most noted for as a breed, their compliance. That, plus the level of esteem and appreciation their caretaker has for them (which insures the quality of that care) and the purposeful working relationship between them (which any draft animal is responsive to). Now this measure of value could be given to either the show horse or the family trail horse, "same difference?" yes... "you don't have to chose" as both are of the same true root value and yet... Some Fjords are both, but some are not. I like them both. But, a good show horse can use a tad more thrust than is necessary for a family pet... is that a lack, or an asset? Depends on perspective of course. Maybe it all stems back to the old illustration of the country horse versus the city horse. A Fjord's roots began in the country as a family horse, a foremost proud heritage to promote and cherish. I guess you can tell it is raining heavily in northwest Montana today and I am trapped indoors = Not complaining mind you, what with past years of drought. Ruthie
