The opposite hock still has bone spurs. The vet says this is a typical progression, first one hock, then the other. I hope that with time, my mare will be without symptoms. She doesn't act as though she is uncomfortable, just stiff, as you mentioned. My vet says that treatments other than pain management, if needed, just prolong the time it takes for the bones to fuse. His hocks went bad at about age 5 and the vet recommended cortisone injections to fuse them. After 6 months he wasn't lame, but he didn't move right enough for a dressage horse, or 3 day eventer. But when I lost track of him after several years he had carved out a career for himself teaching beginners jumping over 2 foot fences. I think the result would have ended up pretty much the same without the cortisone..but at the time I was in a hurry.
