I'm really behind in reading my mail. But although you CAN get Strongid-C
anywhere, isn't it true that their colic insurance is only valid if you buy
your Strongid from a vet? I've heard that Continuex has the same colic
insurance, but you don't need to buy it through a vet. Or am I wrong on all
of this?

I am, however, still going to do the math on the Continuex minus the cost of
Ivermectin which they furnish, especially if I find this is an effective
wormer for all worms in our area and doesn't have to have the annual
deworming for tapes. There was a price quoted by Fred and Lois Pack that led
me to believe that the cost might come in at quite a bit less than .50 per
horse/day. If anyone has an up to date cost for Continuex, I would
appreciate knowing it. I went to Farnam website and they have wonderful
information, but no prices.

Mary,

Go to www.google.com & type in Continuex in the search box. You will find
all sorts of places that sell it with prices. State Line has it for $69.90
per 25 lb's.

Hi Jean

Thanks for doing my math work. I spent yesterday visiting my 90 yr old
mother in-law in hospital, attending grandparents' day at my grandaughter's
school, etc. I really don't think I could have done it yesterday.

Jean, I don't know how you manage to stay on top of all these issues that are
aired on the list, but "thank you". You are always there with some help for
everyone.

You don't have to buy Pfizer's Strongid-C from a veterinarian. They sale
it in the feed stores around here. Initially they sold it only thru vets
because they wanted us to promote it for them. Just lilke the ivermectin
people did. Then once we got everyone using it, then they go OTC with
it. We vets are always getting used like that.

Hi Steve

While we are into worming---Does the Strongid-C (the daily dose) and/or the
other Farnam product also get the tapes? I am beginning to believe that the
daily dose might be cheaper in the long run if it is just as effective. This
double dosing or even quadrupling once a year with Strongid (and my vet today
supported your theory of giving more than a double dose) and then worming
with ivermectin every 6 to 8 weeks is real costly.

Thanks
Mary Harvey

Well, do the math!
Say it costs $.50/day to do the daily wormer, that's about $180. Plus Twice
a year with Ivermectin = $20. Added up the total is $200 per horse.
  Now Ivermectin every 6-8 weeks, say, 7 times a year at $10/tube = $70,
plus triple dose Strongid (Pyrantel Pamoate) paste at, say $8/tube = $24.
Add $24 + $70 = $94 for the Ivermectin and Strongid paste regimen versus
$200 for the Daily wormer plus Ivermectin twice a year!

BTW, the Strongid C2X, Continuex and Equi Aid CW are all Pyrantel Tartrate
2.11%. I see in the catalog that "NU-IMAGE GUARDIAN" also is a daily
wormer, also 2.11% Pyrantel tartrate and about the same price range.

You can get generic Ivermectrin paste for $7.99 a tube in K-V Vet Supply
(free shipping in lower 48) Zimecterin, Eqvalan paste and Equimectrin are
all the same stuff, around $9 to $10 per tube, Pyrantel Pamoate paste,
Rotectin 2, Strongid-P are all the same. Check your catalogs for the
cheapest price.

I would stay away from Quest..The dosage is too critical and you can
overdose with serious problems.

DISCLAIMER! I am NOT a vet..just do a lot of reading! Ask your vet!

Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where horse vets are scarce and feed store
charge a bunch for wormers.
