Re: Short horses??!
This message is from: Jean Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] John and Gail Tobin who have Fjords here (In North Pole, Alaska, outside of Fairbanks) have one that is 13 hands or under, but he is the best looking one of their three. Their daughter, Vianne, rode him in a little scooling show last weekend and he won or placed in every class he entered, against big quarterhorses and arabs, etc. I heard many people commenting what a great little horse he was! Vianne and Tandor have their picture in the last Fjord Herald, on page 29. He bosses around his big 15-1 hh pasture mate, Riktor. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, where my trainer mounted and rode my 4 year old filly Adel for the first time today. No problems! What a good girl! He MAY be 13.0 if he stretches up really tall and one isn't so careful to make sure everything's level! He'll be 4 in July so I'm not sure he'll grow anymore. And then I read everywhere in the list about all these tall Fjords (heck, 13.2 is sounding tall to me these days!) and how they're 14, or 14.1 and still growing and I just kinda whimper inside. So how about it, anyone have any SHORT Fjords they want to brag upon? I can't have the only one out there, can I??! On a different note, Tyr's at his 3rd trainer, and altho I saw this trainer get bucked off Sunday (2 hops, all 4 feet 1' off the ground and one trainer on the ground) I think this guy will do the trick. He promptly put his wife on Tyr, led her around, then gave her control, got his son on him, and slowly worked Tyr into going into a trot on command. Trainer says that he pushed him too fast (showing off for me is likely) and wasn't prepared for the bucking. He'd already had Tyr out earlier that day and ridden him with no problems, but he'd taken his time working Tyr into a trot. Hi-ho, maybe we'll be riding by the end of the summer. That would suit me too. I'm willing to wait a few more months to end up with a horse that I can ride. Casey, who wishes she had one of every color of Fjord there is after reading the last few weeks. I've heard Ring in Massachusetts is only 13-some. And there's a nice picture of him in the Spring Fjord Herald. I saw an attractive small mare at Julia Will's place one time, boarded there for breeding, I think. Sometime I want a 13 hand, very gentle Fjord for my brother-in-law who is crippled in his legs. I wonder if Ring has any offspring small like himself. I've heard he has a special temperament. Hang in there! Great things come in small packages. Barbara Lyn

This message is from: Jean Gayle [EMAIL PROTECTED] Regarding short horses...My unfriendly one Gunnar is probably about 13.2 almost a hand shorter than my former fjord. At first I was embarrassed when I rode as I am a large person. However I am assured by friends that we do look balanced ( actually he is a very unbalanced fellow but we will get there.) Re bucking, gain a lot of weight. I am heavy set and when riding Gunnar the other day (he is still new to me) he decided he was through and started toward the arena door. I had heard that he could buck. I just gave him a strong heel in the ribs to turn him back and his ears went back, his back rounded. I held my bit contact and cropped him on the shoulder at the same time and he moved on. I think, clever me, that he did not buck because I weigh so much. My former horse also bucked with his trainer but never with me. I am not that good a rider so I think it is the weight factor. Yes? Ahem! This message is from: Anneli Sundkvist [EMAIL PROTECTED] When I worked in the Fjordcamp we had Fjords of all sizes. The largest one, I belive was standing 15'2 (154 cm) and his name was 'Bamse' who can be a nickname for something really large. The smallest one was only 12'3 (128 cm). His name was Grappo, but he was always referred to as 'Knatten' which means 'the little guy' in Swedish. We also had a gang that stood around 13 hands, but the majority was 13'3 - 14'2. My present Fjord, Cider, is 14'2 (144 cm) Good to hear that you seem to have found a good trainer for Tyr!
