RE: Trip across country
This message is from: Gail Russell I am not sure Linda was actually going to take a horse. It sounded like maybe they were just travelling with a LQ trailer. But if not, I too recommend starting in the early, early morning or after dark. Makes it not as easy to load horses in the dark. In a dry climate, I have thought of hozing down the shavings in the trailer. I make certain there are shavings so the heat from the road is insulated from the horse compartment as much as possible. I have transported a lot of horses on long distance trip in different types of trailers... Curt I can't imagine safely transporting a horse in this kind of heat, unless the trailer is air-conditioned. Re: Trip across country
This message is from: JFRIZ44 Hi Linda, and all.  I second what Curtiss says. But might add, try to find an area, or round, pen for your horse during night stops. Avoid stalling the horse, as he needs to be able to move around. If you plan ahead there are many places where you can find overnights.  I have made many trips to and from Alaska, hauling all kinds of horses.  Good luck, Jerry in the NW - Original Message -  Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l

Curt I can't imagine safely transporting a horse in this kind of heat, unless the trailer is air-conditioned. I do recall reading an article on summertime transporting and it recommended not traveling in the worst heat of the day, high noon. It recommended travel in the early morning and evening only. I believe it was in the QH Journal. I suppose finding shade mid-day might be a challenge in some regions. Sure has been a scorcher ! RE: Trip across country
This message is from: "Curtis" HI Linda and All, I have transported a lot of horses on long distance trip in different types of trailers. I agree with Kay, it is usually too dangerous to unload horses during most fuel and food stops. The more important thing is to allow the horse to rest it's leg muscles when the trailer is not moving. I usually stop for at least 30 minutes every 2 hours or so. Another thing I do is to make sure that the horses have plenty of hay and water. I hang water buckets so that the horses can drink during the trip. Fill the buckets less than half full. If you can, carry several gallons of water from home with you. Sometimes it is hard to find drinking water while you are traveling. Do not worry too much if the horse does not eat much. After a day or two, the horse may start eating. Some horses eat and/or drink in a trailer, and some do not. When you stop for the night, if possible, let the horse loose in a round pen or arena for a few minutes. If that is not possible, be sure to walk the horse for a while. Have a great and enjoyable trip! Take care! Re: Trip across country
This message is from: Kay Van Natta Hi Linda! My first advice is enjoy yourselves! Are you delivering the pony or taking him on an adventure? Either way, you're traveling some interesting country so, have fun! Second advice (and there's probably more than one opinion on this one)...when you stop for a rest and snacks, lots of folks say to unload your horse and walk him around. My advice, for what it's worth, is pretty much the opposite. Let him stand and relax his muscles in a vehicle that's finally not moving and YOU get out and walk around. Braveheart believes that this is an excellent opportunity for me to give him treats. Apples and carrots are always well received but he also favors Rice Krispies Treats. Anyway, have a safe trip and tell about your adventures when you get back!
